Sale, Sale, Sale! Everything must go!

With the Reds current roster riddled with more holes than Baby Face Nelson and the claims that 2009 is the Reds year to compete appearing less and less likely, its time for a good old fashioned fire sale to take place between now and July 31st.

Trade everyone not named Bailey, Cueto, Volquez, Bruce, and Votto.  Fill the holes.  We're in for another five year plan.  Hopefully the Reds will be able to build a winning team around Bruce, and unlike Dunn, his consistent offensive performance will not be wasted for 7 years.

Calm down...

This team doesn’t need to go on a five year plan. With some good moves, we can be a very good team next year and beyond that in 2010.

by homerun21 on Jun 8, 2008 4:10 PM EDT   0 recs

what moves?

the farm has depth but not at the upper levels, every player moved from the MLB club has to be replaced, and who knows if the team payroll can go up much higher? It might not take five years, but you can’t fill the holes on this team without receiving a good prospect plus salary relief in trades, unless the payroll is going to a level that I can’t imagine it going to, especially considering the results it has given the Reds so far.

Sale ?

I don’t know who’s going to be buying Grif, or CoPat or Bako, or Ross or Stormy Graves etc.
This year is not over and we have a Freel, Gonzo and Kepp on IR, the team is very close to jelling and the only things that seem to be a problem are fundamental.
1.Dusty – Obvious (please see Juror #5)
2. Giffey – Good-bye to one of the true greats
3. A Bopping RH bat ?
4. A more coherently put-together bench
5. Signing Adam Dunn
6. Praying that will Bailey learn top pitch
7. Tweaking the bullpen (We got some ‘old’ soldiers’ down there
8. Continue to build the minor league system
9. Can we get one more good year out of Bronson?
10. Utilize the guys that we have who can hit to their best advantage.
A. Figure out how to get the most out of Freel
B. Is Jerry Jr. at 31 more than a one year phenom at lead-off – Where does he play?
C. Keppinger – This guy can flat out hit – do we keep him or trade him
D. What to do w/Gonzo

I’m liking this team, what I don’t like is how the players are utilized. What is required is insightful management at all levels, there’s not enough $$$$ just to go and out and ‘buy’ a new team.

Reds

This team has an average NL offense on the season, which will go back to below average when Dunn walks at the end of the season. The pitching and defense is in the bottom third. There are holes at 3B, CF, LF, C, and probably SS (Hairston and Kepp do not have the glove to play there, and don’t have the bats for 3B). The bullpen will be fine. The starting rotation… who knows? Harang may have been ruined by Dudepick (hasn’t been the same since that 60 pitch bullpen outing followed by pitching on three days rest), Arroyo couldn’t get an infant out, Cueto will probably be good but its far from certain, Bailey has disappointed on the season in spite of his good start (from an earned run standpoint) against Philly, Volquez…. well, there’s nothing to complain about with him.

I say trade for farm depth and salary relief now, then move some of that depth for useful players in the offseason, whiling signing a guy or two.

Harang is ruined?

Based on two bad starts? I didn’t see the game, (Fucking DVR) but I looked at gameday and Harang’s velocity seemed alright. I admidt that his 60 pitch relief appearnace followed by a start on 3 days rest was a poor decision, but i don’t think that alone ruined him.

OMG! THE SKY IS FALLING!

a dozen losing seasons in a row? get real. we have thompson and maloney waiting in the wings. the pen is good NOW and we have herrera and roenicke. harang will never be this bad again. we’ll probably be the hottest team in baseball in the second half of this season with our rooks having some seasoning under their belts. probably will be too late for this year, but not for next.

who?

Who is going to play LF after Dunn walks? Who is going to play CF? Who will play SS? Who will play 3B? Who will play catcher?

Will Dudepick still be the manager? If so, the roster better be perfect.

Well

I would like to make a bet that Dunn will sign. It’ll be Big Bob’s move. The guy has a man-crush on Dunn. If he doesn’t get resigned we will get decent value for him in a trade. The BoSox could use the lefty bat while missing Papi.

by kennythered on Jun 9, 2008 12:21 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i'll take that bet

cf can be held down by Bruce

I hope they can keep Dunn, find a fill in for CF, or RF, depending on who is more defensivly capable, I still believe in EdE, Kepp can hold down short. I am ok with a defensive oriented Dave Ross, in the short term. Most teams don’t get great offensive production from their catcher. Plus Stubbs, and a few others are in the Minors, and Stubbs has the talent to just dominate the minor league and move up real fast. I am not betting that Stubbs will be ML ready by 2009, but it could happen.

there just aren’t a whole lot of desposable pieces that other teams will want. If it is evident that Dunn won’t stay, he and maybe Griffey are the only ones. Who wants Freel’s contract, and even if a team takes Freel he won’t yeild much. Valentine is a glorified nothing. Catchers like Ross and Bako are a dime a dozen, Patterson has negitive value, I feel like they would have to package him with a worthwhile player, to get rid of him.

I would gladly eat my words

but I don’t think that the offense and defense that this team had for the first two months of the season, plus Jay Bruce, plus a fill-in for Griffey, taken together with the starting rotation will be any where close to being good enough to compete with Chicago. Then think about what if Dunn doesn’t sign.

The offense has no depth and isn’t good any more. Its just as big a problem as the pitching.

Stubbs

Anytime Stubbs would like to start dominating the minors and moving up would be fine with me. Right now he’s 23 years old and in Sarasota.

Stubbs

If stubbsy plays a day in the majors, I’ll be really surprised.

23 in high A is not much to put on your resume

Hairston in CF

Bruce in RF, Dunn in LF with Keppinger at SS. That’s not a bad lineup.

IF Hairston can keep up his current level of production

he wouldn’t be a bad fill in.

You do realize…

that all teams (save the Redsux) have holes on their roster. Even the Cubs have holes in their roster. For god’s sake Jim Edmonds and Reed Johnson get consistent playing time in their outfield. Do you really think Ryan Dempster has finally "got it"? The big difference is their core players are in their prime while our players are still in the developing stage of their careers.

If Dunner leaves, we pay out Jr, and we let our assorted scrub free-agents (Fogg, Affeldt, Patterson, et al) walk the Reds will have roughly 26 million left after raises to fill a couple of the holes. We already have two starting quality (albeit limited/flawed players) SS in Keppinger and Gonzales under contract for next season, so that is unlikely to be altered. EE is an average 3b, nothing more, nothing less at this point. Although his age and possibility for improvement (and the presence of the SS "loser") makes his mediocrity much more palatable; again nothing must be addressed.

You tacitly agreed that the pitching staff is set-up well for the near future so the holes that must be addressed on this team next season boil down to two outfielders and a catcher. Can 26 million bring in three great players at these positions? Probably not. But it gives WJ a lot of options in how he chooses to reshape the team.

Not to mention the only vets with any trade value are Arroyo, Harang, BP, and Cordero. Trading Arroyo makes a lot of sense, but the other three? How does trading a teams most dependable pitcher, their Gold Glove and offensively productive (if somewhat over-rated) second baseman, and the anchor to a promising young bullpen (of the future) help said team? It seems to create even more pressing holes in the team.

Just take a deep breath and remember that this is baseball. Teams routinely lose back to back games. Teams routinely string together days of sparse offensive production and then have days where everything they hit falls in or gets out. It’s a long season and over-reactions like these are bad for your health and sanity!

by Bill Doran on Jun 9, 2008 1:03 AM EDT to parent up   1 recs

I would submit

that Arroyo has absolutely no trade value whatsoever.

take a gander at that contract, friend.

And you could make a similar argument for Cordero. While much more talented, that contract is a dog.

by bobestes on Jun 11, 2008 12:25 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't contend

that Arroyo would bring back anything in a trade, but that he remains somewhat tradable, if that makes sense. While 9.5, 11, 11 (2 million buyout) is a lot of money it remains the going free agent price for comparable mediocrity (see Silva, Carlos and Meche, Gil). I believe that there will be a team interested in an innings eating pitcher who is likely to end up being about average. This is of course assuming he levels out to something resembling his career norms.

The Cordero contract gets far too much criticism from the KLaw’s of the world. For one teams in the playoff race with a glaring hole at the back end of their bullpen make desperate deals, which often defy reason, every season. Not to mention the Reds were not bidding against themselves while negotiating with Cordero, indicating other teams’ interest in signing him for comparable money. Rather he has value or not seems inconsequential to me though as there is no viable reason for a Reds firesale.

don't mean to quibble

but I think Maloney falls in the category of Matt Belisle/Brandon Larson AAAA-level player.

hopefully I’m wrong

by bobestes on Jun 10, 2008 12:06 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i pictured him as Brandon Claussen

nice minor league numbers, lacks stuff, and has number 4 or 5 talent at best. He probably will get more Major League time than he deserves because he is a lefty.

My biggest worry

My biggest worry is about our pitching!

How long can it hold up. I find myself praying start in and start out that nothing happens to our pitchers.
I pray Volquez and Cueto and I think Volquez and Cueto are the real deal but what if an injury happens or the league catches up to them like happens to many young pitchers.
-What if the past two seasons catch up to Harang and his snap on his slider has disappeared?
-What if Homer just isn’t going to be what everyone thought was and is no more than a 3-4? These are my worries. (I negate to mention Arroyo because I feel he is sub league average from here on out and if he strings together any decent starts we need to deal him)

I love these guys potential and I pray they break the curve of only 1 in 3 top pitching prospects succeeding but I can not help but look at the numbers.

However, I really believe that our bats will be there after this year. Dunn is the only possible loss that will really hurt, but as I have said, I doubt he’s going anywhere. Votto and Bruce will only improve and Phillips has to learn some restraint (right?). Griffey will be gone after this year, but the guy is better than he is showing right now. I wish we had some better right handed bats but I do think Edwin will improve on where he is now (Still 2 seasons away from that magical age of 27!) and Keppinger, though no real power, will provide a very good average anywhere he plays (in leftfield if we lose Dunn maybe, we got Bruce’s 40 HRs).

We are not far at all from competing. I think Big Bob will spend the money that it will take to win and Walt will not have too much of a sense of urgency, to trade our young guys and bring in overpaid vets.

Last thing, can Walt the Jock Man please bring that pitching coach over from StL? The guy is amazing and I’m tired of seeing him turn the Franklin’s and Lohse’s of the world into successful pitchers.

by kennythered on Jun 9, 2008 12:42 AM EDT   0 recs

Huh?
Last thing, can Walt the Jock Man please bring that pitching coach over from StL? The guy is amazing and I’m tired of seeing him turn the Franklin’s and Lohse’s of the world into successful pitchers.

Kyle Lohse as a Red: 131 2/3 IP (6 1/3 IP/start), 102 ERA+, 5.47k/9, 2.26bb/9
Kyle Lohse as a Card: 80 IP (5 2/3 IP/start), 106 ERA+, 4.15k/9, 2.13bb/9

The only 2 things he’s doing better is not allowing hits (he has a much better defense behind him, and is pitching in a slight pitcher’s park vs. severe hitter’s park), and not allowing HRs. The Kyle Lohse that pitched for the Reds would look very, very good in our rotation this year.

Often wrong, never uncertain.

by sidnancy on Jun 9, 2008 4:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i thought lohse did an ok job for the Reds

he would fill in nicly as the number 3 behind Harang and EV.
