I hope everyone enjoys Homer's only start before his inevitable MRI. Remember: Win=Happy. Lose=Sad. Homer Pitching = Dire Circumstances.
Let's get a split!

Griffey playing in a getaway lineup? Now I've seen everything!
No Patterson, but no Dunn. Hmm.
I really want Griffey to hit #600 today, so we can put that whole argument of “Was he trying to delay it?” behind us.
by Brendanukkah on Jun 5, 2008 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions
No Adam Dunn
Dustbag subbed in Janish for defensive purposes in advance, so he wouldn’t get criticized for taking Dunn out for defensive purposes.
Not really, but the actual reason (per the Fay) is even worse:
-It’s a day off for Adam Dunn. “I can see him winding down little bit,” Dusty Baker said. “I remember Ted Williams saying after you’re extremely hot for a long period of time - like Dunn was for the month of May—you’ll have a down period because you get physically worn out from running the bases. . . Plus, he’s 1-for-8 with five punchouts against Hamels. It’s a perfect time. Getting Junior back, both of them aren’t out at the same time.”
Dunn is apparently too tired to play on the getaway day because he’s been running the bases too much.
I don’t know about you guys, but I think Dunn has been mostly trotting around the bases lately.
Hey Dusty...Are you sure you're OK? You might need an MRI.

Dunn's been on base in 21 straight games
winding down indeed

Don't forget the 1-8 with 5Ks off Hamels
I think I would probably pinch hit Juan Casto for him there.

God Forbid
Griffey and Dunn ever start at the same time again. And I’m a wee bit skeptical if Ted Williams ever complained about running the bases… I am excited though, as this’ll be the first game I can follow on the radio all season. Best part about Ohio, IMO.
Jeff, we hardly knew ye...
As anyone can tell you
Its hard to argue with a sample size of 8. There’s some solid numbers there to build an argument on Dusty.
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!
maybe he read it sideways
and thought Dunn was 1-over-infinity against Hamels.

I think he will be a frustrating pitcher in the short term, with flashes of brilliance followed by 2.2 inning outtings. You know like most young pitchers.

Let me try.
We’re going to lose today. I can say with 10000% certainty.
Cole Hamels is unstoppable. He will fart in our general direction. He will say that the Reds’ mothers were hamsters, and our fathers smelled of elderberries. We will have no choice but to run away.
Homer needs an MRI. That is why he can’t get anyone out at AAA, and he won’t be able to get any of the Phillies out today.

I'm nervous
All Pronto’s asininity aside, Homer’s had his struggles this season in L’ville. And he’s facing a lineup that seen him before and hit him hard. I think his calling up made sense given the circs, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get knocked around. Plus he’s not getting the ideal lineup today in terms of run support.
Ultimately, today won’t mean much one way or another. Homer’s goal should be to earn his spot in the major league rotation by keeping his walks down and keeping runners who reach from moving into scoring position.
If Homer can be a legit major league pitcher, then the Reds’ quest to build a playoff contender will be a lot easier. /ESPN featured comment

Not that I would condone this, but
there is a thing called tvants…and a really good website that can be found…that shows ways…that well…you do the math.
My question is...
Is there any merit to dangling Homer as trade bait if he comes up and pitches well, provided the offers we get are worth it. I get the feeling that Homer is very highly regarded outside the organization and with the recent success of Thompson, does that make Homer expendable?
"Here's to you, Mr. Ceremonial First First Pitch Thrower Outer"
young promising pitchers should rarely be expendable, IMO
Not that they shouldn’t trade him, but they better be getting someone to replace Dunn/Griffey in the deal. I would not consider Thompson a sure thing at this point either. I’d feel much better having 6 pitchers for 5 spots next year.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays

I wanted to post something about what the press here is saying about Volquez today
but it seems that the wagons complete domination of opposing teams has become common place. There were a few articles that gave the basic details about the game here but nothing special.
They did broadcast the game on local tv last night and I caught the end at my local colmado.

Well Brantley said it was partly on Bruce
because he wasn’t assertive enough to call of Janish. But Janish shouldn’t have been there in the first place, according to Marty.

brantley is horrible at play by play
i had no idea a run scored or even that the ball was in the outfield. he said bailey didnt call off janish
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
you will never know what's going on when brantley is calling the game...
and if he gives you the score, it’ll only be right if that happened to be the score three innings ago

Since it's ESPN
is there going to be a bunch of pre-draft stuff, or is the actual draft starting at 2?

the pre-draft stuff started at 12
negro league “draft” started at 1. real shit starts at 2
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
For those without tv
That was Janish’s error all the way. Bruce perhaps should have called him off, but Janish was settled under it and just booted it.
Cool Part: Janish’s next play was outstanding. He was obviously still thinking about the boot as he was running in from left field and all the sudden you see Homer running out to the outfield to give him a slap on the back.

Bailey still doesn't have his mechanics
If he could get more extension, he would get another 2-4mph on his fastball and late movement.
The Phillies have got to stop knocking everything into the ground. I expect them to shell Bailey the next go around. He badly needs a changeup too.
So lets see:
1.More extension and repeating mechanics
2.Changeup.
Boy, that is all thats needed for him to succeed in the pros. He should have that when he is….........27.

yeah, he's really struggling today
Why don’t the Phillies just stop hitting the ball into the ground. Idiots. They should know that.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
Coming next: The Battle of Bailey
Londoners would come to refer to it as the Blitz. “If only Chamberlain had gotten more extension,” they clucked. “We could have gotten another 2-4 years of appeasement.”
