Corey Patterson is a Red once again
From the Fay
Today the Reds placed on the 15-day disabled list IF/OF Ryan Freel (strained right hamstring) and recalled from Class AAA Louisville OF Corey Patterson (#23)...Freel and LHP Kent Mercker (lower back pain) are scheduled to be examined in Cincinnati later this week...Patterson began the season with the Reds and hit .200 in 45g and 29 starts before he was optioned to Louisville last Wednesday to make room on the roster for Andy Phillips...for the Bats Patterson hit safely in 4 of his 5 apps and produced a 2-hit game and two 3-hit games (9-22, .409, 2 2b, 1sb).
Way to give the people what they want, Walt.

“Rock to start in CF for Louisville tonight.”

What choice do they have?
Its hard to fault this move. Freel is out for a while and Griffey seems to be hurting. You need an outfielder and you don’t really have any left at AAA. We have tapped out our minor league system for now and need to wait a bit for it to re-load.

you are right
As sad as it sounds, we only had two CF options, in Patterson and Dickerson. Drew Anderson can’t play center. Dickerson has not had a good year at all with a strikeout every three at bats.
Let’s hope Dusty doesn’t lead him off, and doesn’t start him every game. If Jr. isn’t back tonight though, you know Corey will be in the starting lineup.
All of this is kind of why I think we need to lock up Dunn for next year. We aren’t deep in Outfield talent in the minors now that Jay Bruce is here.

how about dfa'ing patterson
and promoting sean henry. dfa’ing patterson makes room for henry on the roster. he’s been hitting .293/.370/.492 in 39 games for the lookouts. or even cody strait or shaun cumberland.
no, none of them are probably ready for the majors, but neither are patterson or dickerson (and never will be). none of them would be worse than patterson.

I think, by itself, the move makes sense.
As far as having a reserve outfielder off the bench that can pinch run and play defense, Patterson’s a decent option, but I think the real source of worry with this move is how Dusty will use him. If he’s going to start twice a week and bat leadoff, then I don’t like the move. At least if Dickerson was called up, I think it’s a better bet he’d bat 8th and almost never start.

RR response questions: What do we think?
1. Does Patterson start in his first game back with the team?
2. If he starts, does he bat leadoff? Why or why not?

If he starts, he will bat 1st or 2nd
because if he starts, that means Junior is not playing, which means that Bruce bats 3rd in Knifey-Spoony.
I don’t think he’ll start tonight because the rumor was that Junior would be starting.

He only starts if Junior sits
I will go out on a limb and say that he doesn’t bat leadoff. Dusty seems to be riding the hot hand of Cherry Hudson. Even before Freel got hurt, he was batting second with Cherry leading off. And with the Ascension of the Bruce, either Dusty came to terms with the fact that Corey wasn’t any good, or Walt was right there in his ear making sure that the higher-ups knew that Corey was no good.
But this call up is sort of like watching Girls Gone Wild on rewind: You hope they’ve learned their lesson.

My answers
1. I do not think Patterson starts tonight. I’m not sure even Dusty is that cheeky. It will be easier to justify using Patterson during Thursday’s 1:05 game in lieu of Dunn or Griffey.
2. If Hairston is in the same lineup as Patterson, I can see Dusty batting Patterson second as he’s done at least once this season and dropping Bruce to third. The reasoning having something to do with Hamel’s being a lefty.

Honestly, someone should ask Dusty about this.
One of the “beat writers” needs to grow a pair and ask why Corey Patterson is starting and batting 2nd. That’s a complete joke. I mean, if you’re Dusty, how can you come up with a defensible response to that?

Fay Says:
A little later, the Reds added this: In addition to the Freel and Patterson transactions, today was also outrighted to Louisville OF Drew T. Anderson. That opens a spot for another outfielder, I would assume

That it’s a deal for Griff to happen after he hits 600, allowing Bruce to play RF everyday and for C-Pat to go back to starting in CF.

I heard that the Reds had cloned Jay Bruce back when they drafted him. Looks Facsimile Bruce is ready to be added to the 40-man.

I'd be torn on Facsimilie Bruce
While I like the idea of having his talent out there twice, the whole ethical issues involved are kind of sticky. My good Catholic school training has taught me that cloning humans is wrong. Facsimilie Bruce isn’t gay is he? Because that would really make this an issue.

Junior is a fucking joke.
This is the third straight game he’s sitting out for completely selfish reasons. How can he even claim to be a competitor anymore if he’s taking his $12.5 million this year and sitting the bench because he doesn’t want to hit 600 without his family there? He’s not exactly lighting the world on fire anyways, but it’s a joke that he and this organization can claim to be about winning and then do crap like this. I’m done with Ken Griffey Jr. I can’t think of any way to throw your team under the bus more than this crap, and it’s absolutely humiliating that our manager is complicit in it.

I suppose the decision to IBB is at the discretion of the pitcher at that point, but he didn’t throw him anything close to the strike zone. It was clear he didn’t want to give Junior anything to hit.

Do you really think that Junior is sitting for Florida just for 600?
I do not really find it that improbable that the oft-injured outfielder is actually, well, injured. I have been called naive on more than one occasion. I believe Oswald acted alone in the Book Depository and that the World Trade Center Buildings came down because of planes.

The number of people who have to be involved in the Griffey-sitting-healthy-until-Florida conspiracy is one. I think it seems likely. Was he really so injured that going into this series he knew he couldn’t play the fourth game? His family made no plans. I dunno…

The Yankees DID use Woe-mack in the outfield
He played something like 65 games. He was the worst MLB player in the league that year. And he blocked Bubba Crosby, who was playing much better (but was sadly lacking in veteran presence). The Yankees ended up winning the division via tiebreaker. They had no time to set up their rotation or anything. They were exhausted. If Torre hadn’t insisted on running Woe-mack out so often, it wouldn’t have been that close.
