Game 84 Wrap

Al Behrman/AP

Walk-off wins are always fun, but the main question of this game is what was Dusty thinking?

I'm really afraid sometimes

Let’s say Jocko makes many necessary improvements for the club (dumping Junior, locating a catcher, finding another outfielder, shitcanning CoPat), can Dusty be trusted not to meddle and fuck it up? I’m serious. Could they, would they have the stones to fire him. They cannot think that he’s done a good job with his on-field decisions. Can they?

There is almost no way

they will fire Dusty before two years are up

I think if they gave him a good roster, he'd be less likely to make these mistakes

I’d give him the benefit of the doubt since he did win so many games in SF. I don’t think he’s a good manager, but if Jock can set up a good roster and get the best hitter in the game, I think the Reds can be good in Dusty’s hands.

Damned with faint praise

Yep.

If our roster looked like this:

C: Mauer
1B: Poo-Holes
2B: Utley
3B: Wright
SS: A-Rod
RF: Berkman
CF: Hamilton
LF: Manny Ramirez
SP1: EV
SP2: Webb
SP3: Lincecum
SP4: Cliff Lee
SP5: Dan Haren
RP1: Francisco Rodriguez
RP2: Rivera
RP3: Papelbon
RP4: Coco
RP5: Joe Nathan

And a bench with Corey Patterson, Juan Castro, Paul Janish, Andy Phillips, LLM and Norris Hopper, he would still find a way to construct the lineup such that we would still lose games 1-0 and 2-0.

Hey Dusty...Are you sure you're OK? You might need an MRI.

i bet alot of the players like him

to his credit he does seem like the kind of guy baseball players would want to play for. so he wont be fired unless this team is looking like it is at this time next year. which really is crap, because if i did my job at the level of competance that Dusty does his i would have been fired months ago. good thing my boss likes me, i guess.

I don't understand

how they could like him. If you’re Votto tonight, how could you like him? If you’re Bruce tonight, how could you like him? If you’re Dunn this season, how could you like him?

I understand it is important to work a manager to have good people skills

but i don’t even see that. Players seem befuddled when they are out of the lineup, Freel seemed frustrated earlier this year. Or after one of Arroyo’s games telling the press that Arroyo is obvisiously hurt and he wants Arroyo to be examined before he consulted with Arroyo, and Arroyo learning about that from the press, and seeming to be surprised. I guess he isn’t on the level of telling Mike Morgen, after Morgen requested to be lifted from a game because he was tired, that he is a shitty pitcher (which he was) and that is why has a losing record. Or even removing chairs from the dugout. The players probably do like Dusty. He seems like a likable guy. Bray was impressed that Dusty came up to him and knew him in the offseason. He seduced Matt Belise in spring training, etc…

Slyde mentioned in the opener to the first game thread

that these next couple of weeks are going to be crucial. i think this got us off on the right foot.

Harang pitched well, making his regular one mistake pitch and otherwise showin’em who’s boss. im still rubbing my eyes about Cherry. who is this guy? he’s going to be with the Reds for the rest of year because Dusty likes him, but if he keeps hitting like this im going to like him too. i never thought i would ever agree with Dusty on anything, so history could be in the making here. but in the end, this is still a game we won in spite of Dusty. bunting Votto on the first pitch is ok, i guess, but after watching him flail at the first one you should have the sense to call it off. and pinch hitting Valentin for Bruce is going to go down in Reds history right along side pinch hitting Castro for Hamilton. good thing Griffey had that cape tucked away in the back of his locker. it was a good time to pull it out again.

Speaking of sample size

I wasn’t here for the gamecast but did anyone notice Grande say “Bay hits well against Burton, He is now 2-6 for his career after that hit.” He was 1-5 before that hit right? Did I miss something?

Dusty Dusty Dusty

His ongoing love for Corey Patterson pisses me off every game he pulls a dumb move with that guy, bringing him in every situation he seemingly shouldn’t be brought in? What did Corey Patterson save the dudes life or something, he has followed him to shit loads of teams. Orioles, Cubs, who knows who else…. maybe the Giants im not completely sure… but lets cut that goon loose or send him to Louisville to boost the ticket sales…. oh wait… he couldnt even do that… get that joke outtaaaaa here

Dusty wasn't a manager with the Orioles

Patterson wasn’t a player with the Giants

But, yes, Patterson is embarrasing.

(PS: I like that your “signature” is actually kind of a signature.)

He's doing it. He's eating a tire!

this probably isn't going to format correctly...

but BRef’s WPA charts after games are fun…today’s shows you a) how sweet walk off HRs are and b) how destructive it was to have Votto bunt:

Inn Out Score RoB Pt wWPA wWE Batter Pitcher Play Detail
—-------——+—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—--+
b 9 0 3-2 -2 2 54% 100% K Griffey M Capps Home Run (Fly Ball to Deep CF-RF); Thompson Scores

going to link it in case you want to be able to you know, actually read that

what's amazing is that when the bottom of the 9th inning started, they had a 22% chance of winning the game.

And their win expectancy was as low as 11% in the top of the 9th after CoCo put a couple of runners on. That’s quite a turn around
