Freel to the DL

Ryan Freel has a strained right hamstring and will be placed on the 15-day DL. According to John Fay, this probably means Corey Patterson will be called up. (There's no need to for him to spend two weeks in the minors if a player on the 25-man roster is being put on the DL.)

Ryan Freel is headed for the DL with a strained right hamstring.

"He heard something pop," Dusty Baker said.

Freel being out probably mean Corey Patterson will be back. With Ken Griffey Jr. hurting, the Reds need an outfielder. Patterson is on the roster. I know that won't be a popular choice. But there aren't any alternatives. Norris Hopper still can't throw. Chris Dickerson is on the roster, but he's hitting .253 with 44 strikeouts in 154 at-bats.

Patterson can come up and sit the bench

but he better not start. And if he does start, he better not lead-off. Honestly, I’d rather see Janish + Hairston play than Hairston + Patterson.

i'd rather see Dickerson come up

he can’t be any worse than Patterson. He is why they never should have signed Patterson because Dickerson is Patterson at minimum wage.

Perhaps the Reds should call up Dickerson and continue with the Youth Movement

instead of calling up Patterson, but Dickerson against AAA pitching is striking out with
a Pattersonesque like tendency. He is whiffing once every 3.5 at bats.

I do not know much about Dickerson really, is he as good a fielder as Patterson? I am hoping whoever they do call up is used as a backup and/or a defensive replacement.

Dickerson has a good glove

I think I’d trust him over Patterson on defense. Dickerson also has good wheels. He’s Eric Dickerson’s cousin.

I think it’s going to be Patterson called up, though. He’s hitting well down there in Louisville. It’s a very small sample size, of course, but still.

Somebody correct me if i am wrong

but the impression i got about Dickerson is he is a talented athlete, with a good arm, good speed, and good power, but a swing riddled with holes. I think he is a Jim Bowden wet dream.

His power is overrated.

But he has a decent eye, which is more than you can say about Patterson. Fantastic speed and defense, though. Honestly, I can’t see him being worse than Patterson, so there’s no reason to not bring him up.

i'm sold just on the fact that he isn't corey patterson.

because there’s a slim possibility that baker will evaluate and play him based on his actual talent rather than some vague conception what kind of player he is.

Eh...

Chris Dickerson is still a fast black centerfielder. So I’m not sure that’s gonna happen.

As if things weren't bad enough tonight...

...Mark Sheldon reports that the plumbing backed up in the Reds clubhouse, flooding it and filling it with a lovely odor.

And Harang is now among the league leaders in losses. Just bizarre.

Not at all

It’s not unusual for a hamstring strain.

“Strain” is a euphemism for “tear.” When they say it’s strained, it means a muscle is torn. Sometimes it’s a very small tear, sometimes it’s such a severe tear that the whole leg swells and turns funny colors from the internal bleeding. Surgery might even be required to repair it.

Not that I’m saying Freel is anywhere near that bad. But hearing a “pop” is normal for a hamstring strain. It’s the sound of the muscle tearing.

Dickerson was taken out in the 4th inning last night.

For what that’s worth. Jon Coutlangus unavailable for comment.

I dunno

On the one hand, I agree – it would suck if Patterson came back, because you know he’ll get regular ABs.

On the other, http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=3962Chris Dickerson? He’s only 2 years younger than Patterson, so while it may look like a “youth movement” sort of deal, it isn’t. Plus, if Patterson can just revert to his old bad self (instead of the horrid Corey that played the first 6 weeks), he’s likely to be much better than Dickerson.

Are you Dusty Baker? Still trying to salvage something out of Patterson?

:)

I see your point, but I’d prefer Dickerson if only because he’s less likely to be forced into the lineup. I really have no interest in sitting around and hoping that Patterson will become a less stinky version of a crappy ballplayer.

The ideal

As you said earlier, I’d much rather see Hairston+Janish than Hairston+Patterson, and if Patterson’s up, he’ll play. It would just be nice if the alternative to Patterson was someone better than Dickerson.

Aw, Damnit

This is a bad injury. Freel was doing so well and was hitting the ball consistently, and now we get Corey Patterson, the man in the constant slump.

If, and I say if,

Patterson can get himself straightened out in the minors, and he never hits lead off I think he could be a solid #5 outfielder.

as a fifth outfielder?

if he can get straightened out at the plate in the minors he would be an ok 5th outfielder. I don’t think that is exactly an endorsement but a guy who can steal a base when you need it and play pretty decent defense always interests me.

Da*n

Sorry to hear about Freel, even with his dives and baserunning gaffess he was a huge upgrade over Patterson. If Walt calls up Patterson and he’s batting anywhere 1-6 except as a late game defensive replacement, the Reds will be out of it by the all-star break.

Beware the toothpick knows.
