what is their VORP's?
Junya is well below average this season, especially for a #3 hole batter. gotta be amongst the worst in the league…
Slyde helped with a chart yesterday
our 3 hole is among the very worst in the league. the 1 and 4 are well below average as well. this falls squarely on the shoulders of Dusty the Jerk.

none of the Reds are good this year
but Griffey is particularly bad compared to RF and 3-hole hitters.

i dont get it slyde....
the cupboard is bare, i dont see too many options for Dusty.
Bruce is here. Cueto. Volquez. Votto. Bray and Burton have done well, as has Koko.
Its gonna be a long year…
now i know why bears (or at least Cubs fans) hibernate(d)
People Don't Kill People. Burning Couches Kill People.
Options?
What about taking Bray out for Majewksi? Point is, Dusty will find options if they are there . . .
relying on the likes of Patterson, Janish, and Griffey
at the top of your lineup for extended periods of time is going to sink you pretty low. batting Dunn and Votto at the bottom of the lineup is another bad move. Dusty is just dumb.
Stephen A. Douglas was a great debater, but Abraham Lincoln was the Great Emancipator.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jun 27, 2008 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions
If you're going to mention Griffey,
you may as well say Dunn, Bruce, and everyone else who comes to the plate. This is a good offensive team turned to mush by Baker.
i mention Griffey as a main offender because his OPS+ is a paltry 95 in the 3 hole
Bruce and Dunn have held their own. BP is doing pretty well for himself, but hitting in the 4 hole is just too far beyond him. this lineup is seriously fucked up, and it is all Dusty’s fault. i mean, the depths of his ignorance never cease to astonish. the dude has spent his entire life around the game and its like he doesnt know thing one about it. i half expect him to start instructing the hitters to throw the ball at the runner because “soaky is the only fun way to play”.

I don't mean to defend Griffey, but he deserves as much a defense as anyone else.
What has Bruce done after the first 10 games?
After years of Bob Boone et al. jerking the lineup around when there was no reason to, Dusty at least sticks with lineups and gives the players the consistency that we needed from 2001-2007. Now we seriously need some shaking up, and he won’t do it.
Everything he touches turns to dogshit. I don’t want them to unload the players I like, but there is no other option than to blow it up. It’s a shame we fucked it up so bad while Dunn, Griffey and Kearns were here. But they’ll all be gone very soon.
Griffey's defense is historically terrible
add that to the fact that he is OPS+ing 95 and hitting in the 2,3,4 hole this year and he has to take a good chunk of blame. dont get me wrong, i love the guy. im not of the Marty opinion that this team hasnt won since he got here all because of him (and Dunn), but this year his performance has been weak. and it is Dusty’s job to see that and move him down in the order. again, i dont blame the players as much as i blame the manager. this offense should be about league average but guys like Patterson, Janish, Jr, and Phillips have been hitting in spots they should never be hitting.
Stephen A. Douglas was a great debater, but Abraham Lincoln was the Great Emancipator.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Jun 27, 2008 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions
But really, you'd move Dunn and Bruce to 4 and 5?
How have they done more than Phillips? I don’t know why I’m arguing this because it’s pointless anyway. No matter who hits where, the manager has certainly convinced everyone that they stink (or at least he’s not doing the exact opposite, which is kind of his job).
I’m not quite sure what Griffey’s defense has to do with his hitting in the middle of his lineup. And (I realize I’m taking a free shot at something you didn’t really mean to say), but Griffey’s defense is actually among the best ever, historically.
as Slyde said earlier
BP has 1 more RBI than Dunn, but he has had 56 more baserunners. the dude is a good hitter for a middle infielder, but that does not make him the premiere run producer for the team. my point was that lineup construction has been disgusting this year. Griffey’s defense doesnt have anything to do with his spot in the lineup, but the fact that he is really bad at it doesnt help his case. when i said his is “historically terrible” i meant that his performance in the field this year has been historically terrible, not that his entire career has been terrible. obviously he was pretty good back in his day, but unfortunately a man with screws keeping his legs together cant play and effective RF.

the offense is nowhere near the level it was a few years back. but that being said, there are a number of basic mistakes being made on a daily basis (in both lineup construction and hitting instruction) any one of us here at RR would never make.
