Farmers only, when the Bats got Herr back
The real revelation in the ongoing saga of Aaron Herr is that they actually give out a "Postseason Utility Player of the Year," or PUPOTY.
Triple-A: Aaron Herr, last year's IL Postseason Utility Player of the Year, returned to the Bats with a thud, striking out 3 times and committing 2 errors in the Bats' 8-5 loss to Rochester. Herr was with the Bats all last year with the Bats but joined Cleveland's Buffalo Bisons this year. He was traded as the Bisons were leaving town, so he just headed back to the old home clubhouse yesterday. Kevin Barker hit his team-high 10th home run, and Josh Roenicke and Daniel Ray Herrera got roughed up a bit. UP NEXT: Rochester, 7 tonight.
High A: Todd Frazier hit his 6th home run for Sarasota in the first of two S-Reds losses, 9-3 and 4-1. Dan Perales went 3 for 3 with a triple in Game 2 and is flourishing so far in High A, batting .304 in his first 19 games. UP NEXT: Reds at St. Lucie, 7 tonight.
Low A: Brandon Waring cracked his 14th homer in Dayton's 6-4 loss. Keltavious Jones was 2 for 5 with a triple, and Jeff Jeffords struck out 3 in 3 scoreless innings. UP NEXT: South Bend at Dayton, 7 tonight.
Also: Andrew means went 3 for 4 in Billings' 6-5 loss. ... Juan Duran was 1 for 3 with a triple in the DSL Reds' 6-5 win. ... Evan Hildebrandt allowed just 1 hit in 6 innings in the GCL Reds' 9-2 win. Frank Pfister was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles, 3 runs and 2 RBIs.

Connections
Aaron Herr lost his job with the Buffalo Bisons because the Yankees gave up on first baseman Morgan Ensberg, Andy Phillips’ replacement, and released him. The Indians picked him up and sent him to Buffalo, where he promptly got all Herr’s playing time and made him superfluous.
With Giambi hitting well, the Yankees are less interested in a big bat for first base, and more interested in a defensive specialist. They may grab Andy Phillips, now that the Reds have put him on waivers.
Herr, last year’s IL utility player of the year, is probably the Reds’ insurance in case Andy Phillips doesn’t clear waivers.

How legit are Waring and Frazier?

from John Sickels's Baseball Prospect Book 2008
On Waring:
He has outstanding power, about this there is no question. But he also strikes out a LOT, has trouble with breaking balls, and may lose most of his batting average at higher levels. His glove at 3B is not very good, and given his relative lack of speed, he may end up at first base, which will increase the pressure to hit. We must respect his power, but we also need to see if he can handle pitchers who know how to work the strike zone and attack his weaknesses. Grade C+
On Frazier:
He could end up being a star in the majors, too, at least offensively. Although some scouts have complaints about his swing mechanics, they’ve never hurt him in games. His strike zone judgment is good and he has power to all fields. There are questions about his glove and where he fits on the field. He has a strong arm, but his range at shortstop is limited: just about everyone thinks he’ll have to move to third base. His hands may not be good enough for third, however, and some project he’ll have to play the outfield, which will reduce the value of his bat. A few unanswered questions, yes, but I’m confident in his offense. Grade B.
A B grade is an excellent grade from Sickels. He had Frazier as the #5 prospect in the Reds system before the season started (behind Bruce, Cueto, Votto, and Bailey), and this is a system he considers fairly loaded. He had Waring as the 21st prospect for the Reds. He’s very concerned about the strikeouts. However, a C+ is still a good grade and basically means that Waring has a decent shot at reaching the Majors, though he may just be a role player or marginal starter.

some pretty good news
From the Fay:
Reds scouting director Chirs Buckley said the club has started talks with top pick Yonder Alfonso and the Reds are pursuing the Michael Inoa, the 16-year-old Dominican pitching prospect.
Yes, the Fay mentions three people in the post and manages to spell all of their names wrong. That’s dedication to your affliction, man. The good news is that we’re negotiating with Alonso and it doesn’t sound like we’ll have any trouble locking him up. Fay also notes that we didn’t have a second-round pick, which could make it easier to spend a buck on Michel Inoa. Said Buckley:
Will we get get him? I don’t know. But if we don’t it won’t be from lack of effort or commitment on the part of ownership.”
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
FWIW, it was spelled wrong in the ESPN article as well.
Time to drop that “Worldwide”, ESPN.
