Next up: Toronto
Yeah, I guess I haven't been paying attention, since I didn't notice that the Reds play the Blue Jays next. This is about as close as they're going to get to here.
But since it's an off-day and we seem to have lost the short-lived tradition of team previews, I figure that we could use a thread for that. The projected starters:
Tuesday, 7:07 EDT: B. Arroyo vs. A. Burnett
Wednesday, 7:07 EDT: A. Harang vs. R. Halladay
Thursday, 7:07 EDT: E. Vólquez vs. J. Litsch
I like our chances here, if we can see good Brandon and good Aaron. Oh, and is it time for a Canadian music-themed night? Rush and Guess Who, anybody?

Canadian music night?
isn’t it ironic that we are playing the blue jays a few days after their gm makes unpleasant comments about our home run hitting outfielder?

I saw the violin player from The Arcade Fire, Final Fantasy
perform in T-Dot when I lived there. He totally got upstaged at that show by my cousin Juiceboxxx though.
I think I have heard Jim Guthrie and I think I liked him.

Find his album "Now, More than Ever"
It’s excellent. He hasn’t, to my knowledge, done anything of merit since, though he was apparently a member of Islands for a while.
There's a new Canadian Band called COOLFER20
However I believe this a to bwe a misprint – should be Crolfer 17.
I wonder if the Jays will now become interested in Adam Dunn? Stranger things have happened.Poor Adam – Clownboy doesn’t like him, sMarty doesn’t want him on the team, 75% of Reds fans think he’s a waste, The
Jays GM Mr. Bacarrdi disses him, hell Zach hates him. The only man love he gets is from George Grande.
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
"Was it for the Reds organization or all of baseball?" Bruce said.
its hard fo me to believe this a to bwe a misprint

Some good matchups
I saw Litsch in spring training. He looked good. But I’m confident Voltron will prevail.
One of these days, I’d like to go to Toronto and stay in the hotel at the ballpark. How cool, to be able to watch the game from your window.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
question for Gray
are you in Toronto? and will you be able to attend any of the games?
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
No, I'm in Montreal.
If I had realized they were playing in Canadia, I might have orchestrated a trip to Toronto, but as it is I’ve got plans on Wednesday night, I’m broke, and gas is pushing $1.50/litre. So I’m reluctant…
I am strongly considering it...
$91 roundtrip student-rate, super-crappy $9 seats…but I don’t even have my Reds cap up here with me. Hrmmmm…
go for it dude
how often do the Reds travel internationally? you can be a part of that!

Well, that's acting on the assumption that I actually have it...
Toronto has a covered stadium, so rain wouldn’t be an issue, right?
So that means I could make a midnight return bus after the game…
they have buses up there in Canada?
and their money is as good as ours? oh brave new world…

When I was here in 2000-2001
the exchange was about $1.55 to 1, so my money went a lot further than it does now…
Also the buses are much nicer here. The Montreal bus station is as nice as an American train station, really.
there is a long, social commentary here
on the illusion of American superiority, but it would be a painful and pointless digression. suffice to say, living in another country is the best thing i ever did.
and what is this thing you call “an American train station”? we dont have these things in the midwest. trains are for coal, corn, and cattle.

not if you get on one at 3am
and go from cincinnati to chicago to get to new york city. it only takes a day by train to go what takes ten hours by car!
i once wanted to go see the reds play in denver and wanted to take a train. but it took two days and you had to travel to west virginia then to new orleans before going to denver.
choo, choo!!!
WTF its real easy to drop $100 at GABP is you get decents seats, eat a little, food, have beer or two
and get lucky with Gapper.

As for Canadian music
I still listen to Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It in People often. I believe Brendan likes the Toronto band Stars quite a bit.
Dear Lord, thank you for giving this game your undivided attention. We'll try to be brief so you can return your energies to the movement of the stars and the condemnation of the Jews.
Have you ever heard anything by Bryan Adams?

People Don't Kill People. Burning Couches Kill People.
On the subject of Canadian music... can't forget: (In order of my preference)
1. Three Days Grace
2. Barenaked Ladies
3. Alanis Morisette
4. Tegan and Sara
5. Nickelback
6. Finger Eleven
People Don't Kill People. Burning Couches Kill People.
are tegan and sara radio-play popular now?
I totally missed that.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
A lot of girls try Tegan and Sara while they're in college
But then graduation comes, and BAM! It’s like they never listened to them at all.

Ok, Canadian bands...
Yup, I’m a big fan of Stars (who started in Toronto, but relocated to Montreal). The whole Arts & Crafts label is good (Stars, The Most Serene Republic, the Dears… Broken Social Scene is on the label, but I’m not really a fan). Metric ties in with that whole scene.
Weakerthans are really good, as was their previous incarnation, Propagandhi.
Tom Cochrane is underrated.
I have a soft spot for Bryan Adams.
Good call on Tegan and Sara, crolfer. I’ve been a fan of theirs for awhile, but I kind of have a thing for lezzy rockers.
There’s a band that’s definitely worth checking out called Pony Up! Their album was called “Make Love to the Judges With Your Eyes,” and at first I thought that was their name. It’s a lot better name, anyway. They’re good with names though. Check out this song: “The Truth About Cats and Dogs (Is That They Die”).
There’s a band called The Birthday Massacre that does a really good cover of “I Think We’re Alone Now.”
I gotta say, Robin Sparkles just might be my favorite Canadian.
I have a theory that every girl owns at least one Barenaked Ladies album, but I loathe them with a fiery passion. Except for the intro to the Big Bang Theory.
I’ll think of some more…

Arcade Fire I like pretty well… Feist I’m not so fond of.

I just watched that Robin Sparkles video. My life will never be the same.

Oh yeah
The New Pornographers and Neko Case.
I’m not quite hip enough to be into Chromeo. (I find fellow Vice labelmate DFA 1979 to be overrated).
Black Mountain is good, making some of the better psychedalia around today.
Nobody mentioned Godspeed You! Black Emperor yet.
Hot Hot Heat was pretty enjoyable for their first two albums.
Heh. Remember Kittie?
I always dug The Kids in the Hall theme song by Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.
And, my favorite band when I was 10 – STEPPENWOLF!
Check here for some of your favorite bands from Canada.

They still put on a great show
I went to a free show they did for Obama, which was basically in the middle of a parking lot beside the coliseum in Greensboro. I had very low expectations, but they somehow managed to put on a great show even in such a crappy venue.
I now have a ticket for Thursday night’s game! I’m currently scheduled to see Volquez!!!111111
Also, Wednesday is both Ladies’ Night Out and Speed Dating night. As for Thursday night, I got a reasonably cheap ticket, a portion of which went to Toronto City Mission. I just read this description of what they actually claim to do:
The Toronto City Mission exists to share the love of God and to break the cycles of poverty in Toronto.
Looking at that Speed Dating link...
What’s with the age ranges being different for men and women on July 9? Is that the night for women who want to date slightly older men?
Holy Shit
I helped to put together that show for Arcade Fire and was there that day. Wasn’t that a great show even though the venue was total crap?
Jeff, we hardly knew ye...
From back in the day:Partial Canadian Bands-
BuffaLo Springfiedl and The Band
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
"Was it for the Reds organization or all of baseball?" Bruce said.
blew my mind when i found out The Band was Canadian
because of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.
Digging the music choices, y’all. Reminds me of Reds (and Blues) before that website fell off the face of the Earth, which is too too bad.
Anyone else down for selecting “local music picks” for every new city on a road trip from hereon out?
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
I was checking out Bluejay Banter
And it looks like they do something similar, incorporating a music quote into their story headline. The quote is generally taken from an artist from the city that they’re playing. For instance, they wowed me by using a quote from my favorite Jets to Brazil song when they were in Chicago.

Well the drummer and lead singer was from Marvell, Arkansas, USA
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.

We better start doing this soon
before the RIAA decides to start charging us for talking about their bands.

My buddy Chris would be appalled
49 posts, mostly about Canadian music, and no one’s mentioned Tragically Hip. Unbelievable.
Often wrong, never uncertain.
I was going to say that I didn't like the Tragically Hip
Or the Crash Test Dummies. But in the Canadian spirit of niceness, I wasn’t going to say anything at all.
by Brendanukkah on Jun 24, 2008 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions
I hear you
I’m not that big into the Hip (though “Grace, Too” is pretty good), and past “Superman’s Song” I can do without Crash Test Dummies.
Often wrong, never uncertain.
Once, there was this kid who
Took a trip to Singapore and brought along his spray paint
And when he finally came back
He had cane marks all over his bottom
He said that it was from when
The warden whacked it so hard
Mmm mmm mmm mmm, mmm mmm mmm mmm
Once there was this girl who
Swore that one day she would be a figure skating champion
And when she finally made it
She saw some other girl who was better
And so she hired some guy to
Club her in the kneecap
Mmm mmm mmm mmm, mmm mmm mmm mmm
Mmm mmm mmm mmm, mmm mmm mmm mmm
They got paid for their sound bites
And sold their TV movie rights
And then, there was this guy who
Made his wife so mad one night that she cut off his weiner
And when he finally came to
He found that Mr. Happy was missing
He couldn’t quite explain it
It’d always just been there
Mmm mmm mmm mmm, mmm mmm mmm mmm
Mmm mmm mmm mmm, mmm mmm mmm mmm
Ahh ahh ahh ahh, ahh ahh ahh ahh
Ahh ahh ahh ahh, ahh ahh ahh ahh

Because
They suck.
A guy I used to work with worshiped them for their musicianship. He hated U2 because he said “none of them can read music” (which I found odd, considering both Bono and The Edge could write songs). When I would reply that “U2 puts out good songs, and Rush, for all of their talent, doesn’t” he couldn’t answer.
Often wrong, never uncertain.
