There are alot of Reds fans in NYC...
I moved to New York about a year ago and walking around the city this weekend looking for people who I thought might know the score of the Yankees Reds games reminded me about a fun little adjustment I had to make after my move. I live in a mostly black neighborhood in Brooklyn and I didn't know anyone at all when I moved here, so I naturally tried to make some friends. The first thing i noticed was an inordinate amount of people wearing Cincinnati Reds hats, and i thought "awesome a whole bunch of Reds fans, this is going to be great." After about 3 weeks of walking up to people and asking "hey are you a Reds fan too? I just moved out from Cincinnati myself!" and getting some pretty strange glances I realized something was afoot. Turns out one of the Subgroups of the Bloods hat of choice is the Reds cap with the black brim, also alot of dudes just wear it to match their outfit. Safe to say I felt like an ass. They seemed to be pretty entertained by my complete ignorance though. On a pleasant side note it was nice to see Edinson Volquez, "the Red Baron" plastered all over the back pages of the newspapers this weekend, it made me wistful for the Nasty Natti.

I've learned that the hard way too...
At Hickman, Cincinnati hats are as popular as Cardinals caps… Although I’m not sure what the gang is… Bloods wouldn’t use a C and Cryps wouldn’t use a Red cap…
I get a lot of strange looks walking around in my Reds regalia…

BTW – did you get a podcast of the battle of the bands at Hickman?

i had a student 4 years ago decked out
from head to toe in Reds gear on the 2nd day of class. I figured it was just fashion, but i asked him anyway if he liked the Reds. He wasn’t really happy about that as he thought he was “representing” the Chicago Bears.
Dear Lord, thank you for giving this game your undivided attention. We'll try to be brief so you can return your energies to the movement of the stars and the condemnation of the Jews.

"The Red Baron"
i like that nickname for EV. i like it alot.
funny story about fashion faux-pas (what is the plural of “faux pas”?) and the Reds. i had a teacher in high school who took his family to Cincy for a vacation one year. they were big Reds fans and they went to Kings Island one day wearing their hats and t-shirts. when they got there, they noticed alot of other people wearing red too. they didnt think much of it. then they noticed two dudes holding hands. then his son asked him “why are those two guys kissing? so they asked one of the park attendants what was going on, and he replied, “today the local chapter of a GLBT group is having their annual gathering here at the park.” apparently their group’s t-shirts were red. he was a little uncomfortable to be holding his 7 year old son’s hand. but they stayed anyway and had a great day.

according to my limited rap knowledge
“The Game” used to wear a Reds hat almost exclusively.

This hat seems helpful
it appears to have a urban flare and is explicit enough. Let us sing praise to those who don it for their clarity.

ok, i know this is a stupid question
is the 513 the area code? and do gangs wear area codes on their clothes? if not, i don’t get the hat.
while i’m here, i did the same thing on a subway in nyc. saw some guy wearing a reds hat and made a point to smile and say i’m a reds fan. guy was nice enough about it, though. at least he knew he was wearing a reds cap.
