Game 77: Reds at Yankees
Cincinnati Reds at New York Yankees, Jun 22, 2008 1:05 PM EDT

This all depends on how you look at it: Johnny Cueto has only given up more than 3 earned runs in a game once in his past 7 starts. Really not bad for a guy with a 5.19 ERA. But then again, he hasn't given up fewer than 2 runs in a start since... his first start of the season (April 3). Still, I'm no scout, but I see more stuff coming off Cueto's arm than anybody on the team other than Volquez. And only maybe to that. I still get excited about each of his starts. So let's make this a sharp one, Johnny. Go Reds.

Boo! I knew Andy was on the bubble, but I was hoping he’d get a chance to play again in Yankee Stadium. The fans would have loved to see him.

“It can’t hurt,” Dunn said.
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
"Was it for the Reds organization or all of baseball?" Bruce said.
... We have two right fielders today?
And yes, Dunn has looked horribly lost, while Patterson has looked like an MVP.

Steve Phillips is picking Pettitte today
because the Reds just can’t possibly sweep the Yankees in Yankee Stadium.

I still think it's pretty

Laziness
I can’t get over how every opposing broadcaster in the league goes off on how small GABP is. The Yankees’ guys just flashed the list of pitchers in the NL who have given up the most homeruns. The list: Brett Myers, Brandon Backe, Cueto, Oswalt. So, naturally, it’s because they pitch in tiny ballparks. Why don’t they show us where all those homeruns were given up?
Cueto has given up 11 homeruns at home and 7 on the road. But he’s also started 9 games at home (57 innings) versus 7 on the road (29.2). So what does the tiny home ballpark have to do with any of this?
Not to mention
Batters are hitting .221 against Cueto at GABP versus .331 on the road.
Clearly GABP is a joke of a park.
has Phillips started an at bat
by taking a first pitch ball this season?
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
I love Brandon Phillips
But seriously the guy is not a cleanup hitter.
Lineup construction is one of Dusty’s biggest faults and the most easily correctable.

I think the price for Alex Rios would be too great.
What about CoCo Crisp?
Seems we could have him for next to nothing. He’s arguably the best Center fielder in the game.

Yeah, we went with Rios because he's a little better offensively
but you could go with either one, really. It might be easier to get Crisp right now.

He also has a no trade clause for '09-'10.
That’s why I’m irritated for bringing it up.
Plus, he’s worth the money, but with a contract like that that has just been signed, it’s unlikely that he’s even available.

He gets so excited for the other team and his monotone when the Reds do something good.

To be fair, I didn't actually hear him say that today about Bruce
But he has said it on more than one occasion about Reds’ rookies this year, including Volquez (for throwing back to back changeups).
You’re sooooooo smart, Jeff Brantley.
Shoulda bunted

Can anyone say how the Reds do, run-scoring wise, vs. starters and relievers?

what you dont understand that baseball people do
is that you run with a full count. thats just aggressive baseball, and its the way the game was meant to be played.

Corey bunting
And if the ump is paying attention, he’ll call Corey out for stepping out of the batter’s box on the bunt.

Sure
but I’m not sure about him in CF. His RZR in LF is below Dunn this year. Surprising to me because of his speed, though he does have 12 more out of zone plays.
I want a hamburger. No, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips...
I was actually thinking leave him in LF.
I don’t think he’s a CF either.
I assume Dunn will command too much money, but I think if we could limit him to a 4 year deal, it’d be worth it.
4 yr / $39-$44M…but if some team is gonna give him 6, then say bye.

I think the goal should be trying to find a CF
lest we invite Patterson back for another season. Plus, you can make more defensive impact in CF. And that was part of what Erardi was trying to do. Demonstrate that you can improve the defense to make up for the lost offense.
FWIW, i suggested some other names of lesser known players that might be able to fill CF defensively and manage decent offense (Gregor Blanco and Clete Thomas). Both are young and have good OBP numbers in the minors, but I have no idea if they are available.

base running data is weak on BBRef.
You can see CS here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CIN/2008.shtml But I don’t know where pick-off data is and we have no information on base running mistakes on line drives and such.
