Thompson makes his MLB debut today in Yankee Stadium against a 31-year old making his first career MLB start (he has 11 career games pitched). This could be a fun one!

well this is stupid
ede 7th, and janish 2nd? and Patterson over Hopper again.
I may have to continue my arrested development marathon rather than watch this game.

blackout question
Will I be able to listen to the game through MLB’s gameday audio thing?
For defensive purposes
I do think Patterson is better than Hopper. And you ARE supposed to put your worst hitter 8th. That still doesn’t excuse Janish batting second. Hopefully he can go 4-4 today too, though lord knows how.

i'd put hopper at the top of the lineup

I'm going to the Nationals game tonight
It’ll be cool to see how Daryl Thompson does relative to Felipe Lopez. The other members of The Trade – Kearns and Wagner – are on the DL. Plus they’re playing the Rangers, so I get to see Hobbs again! Hopefully he does better than his 0-6 with 3 Ks performance last night.

Building off what Charlie Scrabbles said last night
Let’s just think for a moment about how awesome Volquez is this season (and how meaningless wins are). He now has 10 wins, which ties him for second in the majors with Cliff Lee, Joe Saunders, Mike Mussina (not last night, buddy!), and Aaron Cook of the Rockies (how the hell…?). He’s only one win behind Brandon Webb. Kyle Lohse is third in the NL with 9 wins. What a stupid stat (except for showing how great Volquez is).
The one thing that Brandon Webb had over Volquez as a compelling reason to be the All-Star game starter was wins. But Volquez has whittled that down to a negligible lead. It’s basically a wash, especially because Webb has one more loss than Volquez. Volquez has 28 more strikeouts than Webb in four fewer innings and a much better ERA (1.71 to 3.27). If he’s not the starter, then there is no justice! In fact, a pretty good case can be made that Webb shouldn’t even start ahead of Tim Lincecum (8-1, 2.21, 95 K’s).
by Brendanukkah on Jun 21, 2008 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah its not even close
the only edge Webb has is in WHIP, and thats because he doesnt walk anyone. but Voltron’s walks dont bother me at all, because they never score. no harm, no foul. its been really strange watching him this year. no one hits the ball solidly off of him. no one. ever. is there anywhere that keeps stats on the kinds of hits pitchers give up? i dont know where to find it, but i bet his SLG against is Hopperific.

Volquez's strand rate is 83%
That’s incredibly high and lucky. The walks are a big issue.
by Nick Papageorgio on Jun 21, 2008 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions
aye, but he allows very few hits, especially home runs
So far this season, he’s very similar to Nolan Ryan. You can get away with walks if you still strike out a ton and don’t allow any home runs.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
i dont think they look at strand rate when they pick starters for the all-star game
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
Yeah
but I’m not arguing that he shouldn’t start the All-Star game.
I’m saying the walks are a big problem.
He’s also been lucky on HR/FB%

Also, from the Fay:
Andy Phillips is the emergency shortstop. Baker said the Reds will look at getting Jerry Hairston Jr. or Jeff Keppinger activiated shortly. Brandon Phillips won’t be playing shortstop. “The way that position is going,” Baker said. “I don’t think Brandon wants to play there.”
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
BTW
From 1956 to 2004, the Reds had 73% of the games started at shorstop by McMillan, Cardenas, Concepcion, and Larkin. In the 3+ seasons since Larkin retired, they’ve had 12 different starting shortstops, with only Felipe Lopez having started more than 100 games at the position. I’m calling it the curse of The BLarkino.

Giese
The Yankees’ Dan Giese makes his big-league starting debut today – drawing the assignment because of the injury to Chien-Ming WangChien-Ming Wang .Giese hasn’t started since June 1, and that was in Triple-A Rochester. Then, he hurled one inning before getting taken out so he could relieve for the Yanks two days later. Since May 27, Giese has thrown more than 41 pitches only once, when he fired 65 out of the pen on June 3.
“We’ll watch him closely,” manager Joe Girardi said of the righty’s pitch count.
This would be a good night to work the count, guys.
The article also has a choice Griffey quote about Yankee stadium:
“My favorite Yankee Stadium memory?” the Reds slugger said last night. “It’s leaving Yankee Stadium.”
Dude, let it go. Billy Martin’s been dead for years.

When Sr. played for the Yankees,
Manager Billy Martin supposedly kicked Jr. out of the clubhouse once. Something like that.
just read this on Reds.com:
- Ricciardi also contacted Reds GM Walt Jocketty. The two previously worked together in the A’s front office.
“He called me before I had a chance to call him,” Jocketty said. “He was very apologetic and said it was a big mistake. The guy got him going on the radio. He told me he had been under a lot of stress lately, and said, ‘Quite honestly, I have to fire my manager and half the coaching staff tomorrow.’ He was sincere about it.” *
Oh how I wish we could change the quotation marks around in that one:

Has some interesting stuff in his blog.
If you didn’t get a chance to see Edinson Volquez pitch against the Yankees at the Stadium tonight, don’t worry. He’ll be back in the Bronx on July 15, probably as the National League’s starter in the All-Star Game.
This kid is good. Like, scary good. The comparisons to Pedro Martinez aren’t far off, watching him change speeds with his fastball and changeup while mixing in some pretty impressive curveballs. That doesn’t even bring into account the fact that he’s playing on a last-place team, he’s 10-2, and coming into an atmosphere like Yankee Stadium didn’t seem to faze him a bit.
What I also loved about watching Volquez was his energy. He’s 24, and he looks like a kid who is just having a great time out there. Striking out Melky Cabrera to end the seventh was definitely a big spot, but for Volquez, it was bigger than we realized.
You see, he and Melky grew up together in the Dominican and played Little League together. So pardon his fist pump after the strikeout (after all, no one knows more than Yankees fans how evil those can be, right?), he was just psyched to win the battle against an old friend.
He also reports that Andy Phillips and his wife Bethany are expecting their first child in September.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
...putting to bed the rumblings that Andy Phillips can't score
What can you say about Volquez, other than how lucky we are to have him on our team. Then I look at Tim “The Enchanter” Lincecum, and at Drew Stubbs, and just kind of think wistfully about what might have been.

I’m really happy for Andy and Bethany. Their first pregnancy turned cancerous. They found out around Christmas 2005. For awhile it looked like they wouldn’t be able to save her fertility. Andy wanted to quit baseball to be with her, but if he had, she would have lost her health insurance. She had a rough time of it, not responding to the usual treatments, but she’s fine now.

production-wise, there's no comparison
curb is basically a bunch of funny scenarios that larry david and his friends have thought of, and then they act them out in front of a camera, without scripts. It’s funny, and I’m a big fan, but as far as which show is a better production, which one is more polished and which one is smarter, it’s AD hadns down. I doubt Larry would even argue with that
What do you mean, "blank slate"?

sure it does
what’s funnier: A man getting hit in the nuts with a baseball, or arrested development? The first time you see it, a man getting hit in the nuts is always funnier. but as one sees more and more predictable comedy, one needs something more sophisticated (smarter) to hold up. curb isnt exactly a man getting hit in the nuts with a baseball, but it’s pretty easy to predict what’s going to happen 20 minutes before it happens

i really hate our commentators
they are defending the trade based entirely on DT… the point of the trade was to improve the bullpen that year and make a run at the postseason. it was not the kind of trade that takes a few years to evaluate
"I never should have given up the animation rights."
the trade was indefensible
we traded away 1/4 of our offense for two relievers who actually made the bullpen worse
"I never should have given up the animation rights."
yeah
wasnt that when we had the best offense in baseball?
