Thompson to be called up
Via the Fay's iPhone:
The Reds are expected to recall from Class AAA Louisville RHP Daryl Thompson (#53) to start tomorrow's game...he will make his Major League debut. Thompson, 22, began the season in the minors and in 14 starts at Class AA Chattanooga and Class AAA Louisville combined to go 6-2 with a 2.22 ERA.
He replaces 22-year-old RHP Homer Bailey in the rotation.
Here's the reds.com version.
Thompson's only had one bad start in Louisville, when he allowed 8 hits and 8 runs in 5 innings against Indianapolis. In his other 3 starts, he's allowed just 2 runs, striking out 18 in 22.2 innings. He had a 1.76 ERA in Chattanooga, with 56K and 14BB in 61.1IP.
I'd also like to point out that Thompson's the last piece of The Trade to make it to the majors. So far neither team has gotten much production from the players in that trade. Maybe we can end up with a solid starter out of it.

I voted for;
X -boobs
I am bullish on Thompson, he has a 91-94 MPH with his fastball to go along with a decent change up, curvel and slider. He can strike guys out and he appears to be able to eat some innings. I think he has more3 of an arsenal than Homer Bailey and will be more effective from the get go. Not to say that he’s young and he’s not had a lot of time in AAA, but then neither did Ceuto.
This guy had better be good ‘cause that and having a good personality is the only way he’s ganna get the girls.

"he can strike guys out"
Just wait until Dick Pole teaches him how to slow his fastball down to 87-88 and pitch to contact.
I think the Reds are rushing him,
but I really like Thompson. I have ever since the Expos drafted him—eighth round, Laplata HS. I would have preferred and August/September call-up, but getting a good look at him during a tough stretch of opponents might be a good thing. Thompson has the type of confidence that likely won’t allow him to get down on himself if this initial venture into the big leagues doesn’t go as well as he hopes.

I thought the article...
...was going to be about Manny Ramirez.
Why can’t Hal drive? Never learned, or is he too old now or something?

Legally blind, that is

I had no idea
Has he always been legally blind?

Wow
I love this article. I had no idea.

hat tip to MLBTR
from the Columbus Dispatch:
On a Cincinnati radio show, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty mentioned five “untouchables” on the roster: Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto and Edwin Encarnacion.
Wonderful, for me anyway, to see Edwin on this list. Walt realizes he’s still just 25. At this point, these are a terrific set of young guys to build around.
I doubt we’ll be letting go of Brandon Phillips anytime soon, either. Anybody else, though, I could plausibly see getting moved in the next couple years.
Also, from Jayson Stark, Ryan Freel is apprently getting a lot of looks. Stark names the Phillies, Braves, Mets and Marlins as a few of his suitors.
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
I'm surprised Phillips wasn't mentioned
I wouldn’t trade him. He’s the only good defender they have.

The part that I love about this the most
is that 2 out of the 5 untouchables are starting pitchers. That’s awesome. When was the last time we saw that?

Hmmmm
Homer’s not on the list.

Neither is Harang, strangely

i find neither of those strange
if we can get the bounty befitting a possible future No. 1 ace, i deal homer. and if we can get a bounty befitting a current ace, I deal Harang (who we only have for 2-3 more years, as opposed to another 5 for Voltron and Cueto).
The really strange exclusion from his list, of course, is David Weathers. He’s not someone we can easily replace.
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
Patterson's not easily replaced
Just cuz no one else is that bad.

Maybe...
...Tony Woe-mack will come out of retirement.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Then why is Votto untouchable?
It’s not like he’s irreplaceable. Other than not having a proven track record, of course.

something i just learned
dave weathers played for the WS champion 1992 Toronto Blue Jays. Wow.

I'm assuming you mean African American (as opposed to Latin)
I think it’s John Roper: June 22, 1995

How can you forget Mo Sanford?
He started for the Reds in 1991.
McElroy never started a game for the Reds.

I once actually thought
Mo Sanford had a future in baseball. Ah, to be young again….
Some guy at the bar tonight was trying to tell me that Tiger Woods tore his ACL because he's black
“A lot of those injuries happen to them in other sports too. Is that a correlation?” Uh, they’re all athletes? Is that the correlation? Then I also tried to tell him that, racially speaking, Tiger is actually more white than black. I fucking hate Virginia.

yeah, but golfily speaking, he's definitely more black than white

I thought I had heard all the stereotypes, but that’s a new one.
Virginia is for lovers … of the master race!
Baseball is a great sport for shorter more wirey African American athletes, who smile a lot and say "Yasssirrr!
All of the big guys (except Prince Fielder) are playing Basketball, Football or Golf. We are lucky to have any black baeball players in Cincinnati, home of Marge Schott.
