Good point.
Aaron Harang will struggle against the Dodgers. He is not a good major league pitcher. I don’t know what a quality start is.

But he’s more of a Bill Hall All-Star. The other guys (Berkman, Kent, et al) are legitimately good players who just kick the ass of the Reds especially hard.

Well, I have to admit, I think this is the best batting order fistbands has put out there
in awhile, with injuries considered.
And Eric Stultz hasn't made a good movie since
his little role in Pulp fiction, and he will always be the MASK to me.
Even Jay Bruce
can only evade the dark, sinister, strikeout forces that permeate the Reds for so long.
Eventually all succumb to its powers.
Or maybe Eric Stoltz is just that damn good

GM. Marty’s reaction…”seems a bit strong” to say he does not like baseball.
Seemed like a perfect MartyBait as well
I’m surprised he didn’t say that he agreed with JP.

Indeed he did. And everyone knows Stoltz hasn't had a hit in a decade.
Yes, I will beat the dead horse.
Gameday says Harang's fastball are topping out in the high '80s
Given the source, this may be crap but does anybody have a sense if this is accurate or typically of recent starts? It’s a bit alarming and might have something to do with his recent struggles. As well as his inability to throw a fastball by the opposing pitcher for strike three.
well, according to Marty, it was horrible baserunning by the Dodgers for what that is worth.
I think his head would explode to say Dunn made a good defensive play.
I'd believe bad baserunning
Still, kudos to Dunner for making them pay for it.

To go off-topic...
I’ve been to Québec City, and it’s nice and all…but Montréal is much more interesting. The former has plenty to explore for a few days, though, with a wall and a nice old town. But it’s all quite touristy (especially in the summer), and Montréal has a similar touristy old part, but lots of other stuff on top of that. There is some craziness this year in Québec City since they’re celebrating the 400th anniversary of its founding, but unless you guys are fluent, you won’t understand any of those festivities anyway…
Thanks
That was kind of what I figured. My sister speaks French. Perhaps not the French that they speak in Quebec, but she was able to pick up the French they speak in Madagascar pretty well, so it probably wouldn’t be a problem. I still think Montreal is the better choice, particularly since they want to drive from Ohio.
by Brendanukkah on Jun 19, 2008 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
She won't be able to figure out wtf they're saying
but in Montreal, it won’t matter. But given the choice, definitely go for Montreal.
If you want recommendations, let me know.
I will
There’s other choices besides Canada. They also were discussing going to see fishing villages in Nova Scotia, which seems fun in an old-person sort of way. I’m steering them towards Montreal, and then my brother and I can just go to the “clubs.”

IN PLAY, OUT(S)
Great homestand, guys. 5 straight losses.

Can we get one of those rotating schedules next year?
Like in college sports where some years you don’t play a certain team in your league? And then, can we skip the Dodgers next year? What the hell… they aren’t even that good.
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!
Starting to get philosophical
Maybe we’re doing the world a service here, and forever puncturing the myth that Dusty Baker is a good manager. I’ll grant you that losing today was not his fault (he really didn’t make a bad move all game, including the lineup construction). But he’s not a good manager. He shouldn’t manage a major league team. His reputation is that of coming in and turning around struggling franchises, but maybe we’re the team to finally show that he was just lucky.
One crappy, wasted season to save a thousand. That’s what we believe.
Yup, I’m starting to get excited about Wanted.
With that said, how long till we fire Dusty?
I realize it’s not going to happen this year, but mid-next year, perhaps? He’s got a three-year deal, right, so eating only half of that isn’t bad.
The fact that Aaron Harang now sucks and most of the rest of the rotation isn’t any better also strengthens the argument that he ruins pitchers. Not a good manager who will tear up your staff. Time to make a change, Jock!
Harang's 10th loss
And we’re still in mid-June. Nobody in the NL has lost 20 since Phil Niekro in ‘79.
Bruce ejected
From Fay:
Jay Bruce thought he raised his hand in plenty of time to call timeout in the ninth. Umpire Bob Davidson didn’t, so he didn’t grant it. Dodger closer Takashi Saito threw strike 3.Bruce argued and was ejected.
"I thought I called time early enough," Bruce said. "He didn’t think I did. Obviously, we disagreed."
Strongly disagreed.
"I said some things I shouldn’t have," Bruce said.
Davidson tossed him quickly.
"I think there’s a little shorter leash with some of the young guys," Bruce said. "I disagreed with what he said. . . I’m not the type of player who is going to argue calls, especially in that situation. We’re trying to win the game. That’s big. (But) I’m not going to just walk back to the dugout when I feel like he took the bat out of my hands."
Er…sorry, kid, but just because you ask for a timeout doesn’t mean you get it.
And I have to say, that lineup is not what I expected from Dusty. Could he finally be getting a clue?

Things could always be worse
We haven’t had this happen yet this year
Top of the 8th, Reds Batting, Ahead 5-0, Jon Rauch facing 8-9-1
Jon Rauch replaces Ryan Zimmerman pitching and batting 5th; Brendan Harris replaces Mike Stanton playing 3B batting 9th
D Ross Strikeout Swinging
B Arroyo Strikeout Looking
R Freel Walk
F Lopez Strikeout Swinging, Wild Pitch; Freel to 2B; Lopez to 1B
A Dunn Strikeout Swinging
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
I think he's saying the Reds haven't been ahead 5-0 going into the 8th this year
I don’t know if that’s true or not, but it sure feels like it.

I think he's referring the 4 strikeouts in one inning, actually.
"My wife ain't never ran and got me no pheasant." - Fistbands
No, I get that.
I’m just sayin’...
(though that only demonstrates that Arroyo pitched seven shutout innings, to be exact)
Dusty
Dusty on Patterson:
Corey Patterson started in center.Bruce has started 14 games in center, five games in right and one in left.
“Ultimately, he’s a right fielder,” Baker said. “He can play both. There’s not much difference now. He gets good jumps on balls.”
Bruce’s speed is above average.
“But you want a burner out there,” Baker said. “Patterson is more of a center fielder type. You want to keep Jay’s bat and his legs fresher longer. There’s a lot of running out in center.”
Dusty on hitting:
“No. 1, we’ve got to have better pitch selection,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “No. 2, we’re striking out too much. When you don’t put the ball in play, you’ve got no chance to get a hit.”
Dusty on everything:
“We’ve got to pitch, we’ve got to play better defense. Every time we do something, whether it’s an error or not, it’s cost us. Lately we haven’t been playing good defense, we haven’t been picking up players in scoring position, we’ve been pitching fair sometimes, good other times and not so good other times. We’ve just got to get our total game together, focus and concentrate better. A lot better.”
On the bright side, Trent thinks it’s going to be Thompson on Saturday.
