Goodbye Bailey, hello Hopper!
Homer Bailey's stint in the fifth spot of the Reds' rotation proved to be only a cameo appearance, and a forgettable one at best.
As expected, Bailey was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. Cincinnati used the opening of the roster spot to activate outfielder Norris Hopper, who had been on the disabled list with nerve irritation in right elbow since April 23.
Bailey was 0-3 with an 8.76 ERA in his three starts. His last start was on Sunday vs. the Red Sox, in which he gave up five earned runs over 2 1/3 innings in a 9-0 loss. After that outing, manager Dusty Baker would not commit to giving the 22-year-old another start.
The Reds did not announce who would take Bailey's turn when the team faces the Yankees on Saturday in New York.
"We'll do something else for Saturday," Baker said of another pending roster move.
One leading candidate for a callup could be Louisville's Daryl Thompson, who has never pitched in the Majors and is scheduled to pitch for the Bats on Friday. Thompson faced the Yankees this year during Spring Training and struck out the side in a one-inning relief appearance.
A 22-year-old right-hander, Thompson is 6-2 with a 2.22 ERA, 18 walks and 78 strikeouts in 14 starts combined for Double-A Chattanooga and Louisville. He's 3-0 with a 3.25 ERA in his four starts since the promotion to Triple-A.
Another choice could be left-hander Adam Pettyjohn, who is 7-2 but has a lofty 4.84 ERA in his 14 starts for Louisville. Though Thompson is already on the 40-man roster, Pettyjohn is not.
Injured starter Josh Fogg, who was replaced by Bailey after going on the DL, is scheduled to make his third rehab outing for Class A Sarasota on Saturday.
The Reds have had zero stability with the fifth spot this season. Bailey, Fogg and Matt Belisle have combined to go 2-9 with an 8.74 ERA.

Never thought I'd see the day when was overjoyed, yes overjoyed by the name:
Norris Hopper. Despite the fact that NoHo can barely hit the ball out of the infield and that he hasn’t hit a home run in his entire life, including T-ball and High School, his ability to get on base via the bunt surely is a vast improvement over CoPat (who should be sent down when the Thompson is brought up). When Kepp is back I could see interspersing these guys through out the lineup. like:
Noho – CF
EdE – 3B
Bruce -RF
BP – 2B
Kepp – SS
Dunn – LF
Griffey – RF
Bako/Ross – C
P.
Now where to put Jerry Jr. when he returns? Hopefully he’ll continue his career year.
Thompson is the guy that should get this next start. He looks like the real deal and it will be good ‘09 experience for him to get a taste of the ML level as much as possible this year.

It's also his turn in the rotation Saturday, FWIW.

It says up there
that his day to pitch for Louisville is Friday. So if he gets yanked from his start, he’s our man.

Could be, I'm going by what I heard last night on FSN, so it's probably wrong.
Although… there’s no source on the article above… so…

To be honest, I don't think I can come up with a way to make that lineup better without Griffey.
Who’s filling out the lineups lately? It can’t be Dusty.

really this happens every season...
the reds suck and we lose interest, and game threads go up later and later, until we have to create our own, and get it bumped around the third inning

Trent and Fay don't have lineups up yet, so it looks like everyone's behind today.

Fay saw his computer say "Submit"
And just curled up in the fetal position, awkwardly stroking the mouse.

Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi took some shots at Adam Dunn while answering a call on his radio show Wednesday night. Here’s what Ricciardi said:
"Do you know the guy doesn’t really like baseball that much?" Ricciardi said to the caller. "Do you know the guy doesn’t have a passion to play the game that much? How much do you know about the player?
"There’s a reason why you’re attracted to some players and there’s a reason why you’re not attracted to some players. I don’t think you’d be very happy if we brought Adam Dunn here …
"We’ve done our homework on guys like Adam Dunn and there’s a reason why we don’t want Adam Dunn. I don’t want to get into specifics."
Dunn’s response:
“I really don’t care what the clown had to say. You can use the word clown. I don’t know why anyone would go out their way to discredit a player.”
“It pisses me off.”
Will he take it out on Toronto when the Reds play there? “The players didn’t say it. Some clown sitting in an office pushing papers. I don’t play for anyone other than the guys in here. He doesn’t know me. . . He has no idea what goes on in this clubhouse. He’s not even in our country.”
“I guess if something happens I can eliminate one team. I’m not going to Toronto.”
