Game 73: Reds vs. Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers at Cincinnati Reds, Jun 18, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

Next Game

Los Angeles Dodgers
@ Cincinnati Reds

Wednesday, Jun 18, 2008, 7:10 PM EDT
Great American Ball Park

Derek Lowe vs Bronson Arroyo

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing out to right field at 15-20 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 70.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Derek Lowe 4-6 4.03 1.30 61 24

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Bronson Arroyo 4-5 5.31 1.62 75 31

The Reds have scored 16 runs in 7 games so far on this home stand.  That has to change.

Arroyo looked good in his last outing and he has a 3.04 ERA over his last 8 starts.  He may only be a 6 inning pitcher at this point (remember, he pulled himself out of his last start after 6 IP), but if those 6 innings can keep the Reds in the game that might be enough.

Outside of Bailey's two starts and Cueto's 8 walk fiasco a week ago, the starting pitching has been good on the homestand.  Hopefully Arroyo can keep it going.

I just read the 2003 Frank Darabont script for the Indiana Jones sequel

I haven’t seen the actual one, so I don’t know how it compares, but I liked the script pretty well. There wasn’t any Shia LaBoof character, which was fine. There was a nice moment with a drunk Indy in a museum. Is that in the new movie?

Speaking of bad movies...

I accidentally ended up seeing one of the worst movies ever last night, 88 Minutes.

The reviews are pretty hilarious, though. Like, say:

Given that 88 Minutes actually runs 108 minutes, it’s tempting to make the joke that the movie is 20 minutes too long. In actuality, it’s 108 minutes too long.
Or:
If you like your women half-naked, strung upside-down from pulleys, and sliced like deli meat, this is the movie for you. Whether the victims are more tortured than the plot is a serious question.

by Gray on Jun 18, 2008 5:23 PM EDT reply actions

by chandrathan on Jun 18, 2008 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, the closest to decent nudity

was the baffling shot in an early scene of a woman brushing her teeth while standing with one leg pointed toward the ceiling.

by Gray on Jun 18, 2008 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

i like al pacino

but i wasn’t sure that movie would be any good…

how did you accidentally watch it?

When it comes to Phil Mickelson...Marty's not a fan.

by chandrathan on Jun 18, 2008 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I had assented to SaTC

but it was sold out, plus that theatre was packed, so we went to another, where I hadn’t scoped out the options.

Others thought it was the serial killer drama with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro which is apparently coming out in a couple of months…and which must have at least looked like it kind of made sense in the trailer.

This one was totally absurd from the start. As in, Pacino gets a call from someone telling him he has 88 minutes to live…so he doesn’t call anybody useful, and goes about his normal day. WTF?

by Gray on Jun 18, 2008 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

When it comes to Phil Mickelson...Marty's not a fan.

by chandrathan on Jun 18, 2008 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course not.

So it’s just 88 minutes of waiting to see how the person trying to kill him will die.

by Gray on Jun 18, 2008 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

by Paul Householder on Jun 18, 2008 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Trent gives us this one:

Joey Votto 1b
Jolbert Cabrera ss
Jay Bruce rf
Brandon Phillips 2b
Adam Dunn lf
Edwin Encarnacion 3b
Corey Patterson cf
David Ross c
Bronson Arroyo p

Fay for some reason has Dunn and Phillips switched, but I suspect this one is right, since it involves moving fewer people from Dusty’s default lineup.

Did we trade Griffey to Rays for Longoria and Shields yet?

by D-Rock on Jun 18, 2008 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

C says

he’s still sick.

He said he has “flu-like symptoms” and has trouble focusing on things far away, and thinks that may be dehydration. Baker said he doesn’t expect Griffey to play today or tomorrow. When asked if he could still pinch hit, Griffey said: “Hopefully not—hopefully we’ll have a enough runs that I don’t have to.”

Oh, and he says Dusty plans to start Hopper tomorrow, presumably batting leadoff:

Hopper helps immediately for the team’s bench and will likely start tomorrow leading off against lefty Eric Stults. “It gives me versatility in the outfield I didn’t have last night," Baker said. "We’ve got a left-hander tomorrow and I don’t think Junior’s going to be available tomorrow either."

Andy

He didn’t hit lefties well for the Yanks. And he kind of struggled with hitting off the bench…and Torre used him a lot more often than Dusty does.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

I refuse to believe that Dusty Baker

would not utilize a player in a way that maximizes his demonstrated strengths!

by Brendanukkah on Jun 18, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Funny you should say that

At one point, he was the example in the definition of “AAAA” in Wikipedia’s baseball glossary. It wasn’t meant in a mean way or anything, but irate Yankees fans changed it when they found out.

I think Andy’s problem is that he’s a tweener. If he plays regularly, he can hit well enough. But he’s not good enough on defense to start anywhere but 1B, and his bat is not quite good enough for 1B. That adds up to “utility guy,” but he doesn’t hit well when he doesn’t get regular playing time.
