Are the Yankees desperate now?
Guys.....I'm just throwing this out there, but the Yankees lost their best pitcher in Wang and he is out until September, at least. That is a long time. Do you think they are now in desperate need of pitching?
If so......could we package Arroyo with Bailey and Dunn for some of their better prospects? Like Philip Hughes (who is hurt right now) and one of their young prospects, like Austin Jackson, Brett Gardner, Ian Kennedy or Jesus Montero. Then, maybe a throw-in C+ or B level prospect.
Why would the Yankees do it? Because Arroyo is a proven innings eater who, at times, gets into really good rythym and performs well. Also, he tends to do better when the league hasn't seen him a lot and there are many players in the AL who haven't seen him for awhile. They also get a big-time power hitter in Dunn, who they historically have overpaid for. He would have to split time between OF, DH, and maybe even 1b but I think Steinbrenner would have some interest in him. And Bailey? Well, he still has big-time potential, right? We have to hope they believe that as much as the Reds do.
Why would the Reds do it? Only if they thought they weren't prepared to sign Dunn and wanted to get something for him. The Reds get a stud young pitcher, who has not performed well this year but seems to be much more polished than Bailey. They also would get a top-ten prospect who would be close to major-league ready. Either Jackson or Gardner gives them lots of speed, good defense, and Gardner gives them high OBP. From my reading, Jackson seems more toolsy, but I'm not sure as I've not seen him play. Montero is a power-hitting catcher. Kennedy would give us depth at pitcher.
Anyway, you may hate this idea. However, with the Yankees present situation, I would love to hear your takes on it.

They would have to get A LOT more than 2 prospects back in that deal
Despite the various negative opinions that go around in regards to the players the Reds would be giving up, all three should have more trade value than you suggest. I would think that Arroyo should be worth a high prospect and a low-level prospect on his own. And even though Dunn is a rental, he’s a high quality rental. He has to be worth as much as Arroyo. I know prospects are highly valued in the market, but they still are unproven and not worth 2 Major League starters plus another prospect.
I do think Bailey will end up being packaged in a deal this summer – probably with either Dunn or Griffey to give some long-term upside to the deal for the other team.

I'd be surprised
They don’t want a Bronson Arroyo; they’ll try to get Sabathia.

good points
I agree that Sabathia would be their main target but their pitching has not been great this year. I would think Arroyo would appeal to them. We might even throw in Weathers or Affeldt (although I still like his stuff and age). Perhaps we could get a few of their good prospects and some of those seem major-league ready or close to it.
You know the Yankees: they might pursue Sabathia AND Arroyo AND Dunn and bullpen help to try to make a run at the Rays. They have the money and their pride is probably really burning right now, with Tampa Bay giving them such a run. Plus, their roster is not getting any younger. They need to do something to win now, if they think they can. Is Jeter still out? I’d even throw Janish in for some of these prospects.

I'm not sure why the Yankees
who are starved for pitching would trade away Phil Hughes and/or Ian Kennedy for offense or offense&Arroyo. I also doubt they would find your offer of Paul Janish all that magnanimous.
With the uninspiring list of free agent hitters available this off season, the Reds have got to be careful with trading Griffey and Dunn. They might be able to justify trading Griffey for minor leaguers, but they need to get something serious for Dunn. If they fail to, I don’t see how they can generate the offense necessary to win in 2009.
A desperate Yankees team would be a boon to trade with, but this season they don’t have a lot to offer and their front office doesn’t appear as desperate as they do resigned to their fate. This just isn’t their year.

More good points...
I agree that they wouldn’t find my offer of Janish magnanimous and it wasn’t really meant to be. I’m not that optimistic. :) However, I do think the Yankees would consider trading one of their young pitchers for a proven, solid, innings-eater like Arroyo. If we throw Bailey in on the deal and a good reliever, like Weathers….......who knows? I agree that we must get something for Dunn if we trade him and that’s why I said Jocketty should only do it if he is pretty sure he doesn’t want to sign Dunn after the year. I’d rather try to package Dunn like this and get some really good, young, players, than just get in the supplemental draft after losing him.
I really do think that Dunn, Arroyo, Bailey, and Weathers (or maybe just 3 of these) would net a good return from the Yankees, that could include Hughes and some of their top prospects. And, I think the Yankees would have interest UNLESS you are right and they are just willing to say it’s not their year. Perhaps that is how they feel but I still think they believe they could contend for the wild card if not for the division.
I could be way off with this but it seems a possibility to me contingent on these factors:
1. The Reds know they will not re-sign Dunn
2. The Yankees still believe they can contend
3. The Yankees believe that Bailey can be a front-end pitcher.
4. The Yanks believe Arroyo will help eat quality innings for them.
I think #’s 2 and 4 are not stretches at all. However, #s 1 and 3 are variables that are much harder to predict.

You forgot the most important point of all
Hank Steinbrenner is a crazy motherfucker and at any moment could decide that now is the time to assert himself. He goes over Cashman’s head, orders a trade, and Cashman leaves at the end of the year (if he doesn’t resign first).
Also, I know they’ve been hit by the injury bug, but I would never count out the Yankees. They were miserable last year too, then went on a huge run to get back into the playoffs. This is about that time of year when the run starts, and they’ve been playing better lately. I don’t count the Yankees out of it until September.

It's worth mentioning
that both Hughes and Kennedy have been about as bad as Homer this season.

Kennedy is an over rated prospect

It's also worth mentioning that all it took to get Claussen was Aaron Boone.
Btw, did anyone notice that the other guy we got in that deal, Charlie Manning, made his major league debut this year with the Nationals? Funny thing is, Manning became a Red AFTER Bowden was fired.

That was a different organization
Cashman has made it clear that he doesn’t want to trade prospects (especially pitching prospects) for veterans.
However…the Yankees ARE desperate. So desperate that Cashman and Girardi might be on their way out.
I don’t think they’re so desperate they’ll go for Arroyo, though. Don’t think they’ll be interested in Dunn, either. They’ve got enough lefty power hitters with suspect gloves.
They might be interested in Bailey, but probably not for Hughes. I think they’re still confident that Hughes will be better than Bailey…eventually.

If the Yankees are desperate enough to give up those guys for Arroyo and Bailey...
For the hell of it we should throw C-Pat in the deal too
