Game 69: Red Sox at Reds

Our weekend of national exposure is here (tomorrow's game is on Fox, Sunday's on TBS.) Although many people across the country will probably tune in and suppose to find the Red Sox playing each other in some sort of midseason scrimmage. ("I don't know, it says Red Sox vs. Red Sox.") So remember: The world is watching. Don't screw up.

I'm ready for this to be Cleveland, Part Deux
A big, bad AL team rolls into town, thinks they ought to win with ease, and then we sweep the series. I don’t know who Masterson is, but it looks like he’s put up good numbers. Still, you gotta like your chances with Harang on the hill, record be damned (and assuming that stuff he was saying about not feeling right is in the past). Tomorrow, Volquez gets the Fox start against Wakefield, so I think that one tilts in our favor. And Sunday is Bailey versus Beckett. That one we just have to cross our fingers and hope for the best.
Also, remember to be patient, and if Corey Patterson gets a start in this series, I will friggin’ lose it.
The pride of Beavercreek, OH
It looks like Masterson has blown through the system after being picked in the 2nd round of the ‘06 draft. From his Wikipedia page:
Masterson pitches at a three-quarter arm delivery with a sliding-type motion, who some compare to Dennis Eckersley’s delivery. His pitching arsenal includes a fastball, sinker, slider, and a change-up. It has been claimed that his best pitch is his plus-sinker with a heavy-drop. Masterson throws his fastball in the mid 90’s, his slider at the low 80’s, and a change-up ranging from 77-81mph. He can vary his sinker at speeds of 84–94 mph, sometimes catching many batters off balance. He also throws a variety of different fastballs, varying the speed from high 80’s up to the mid 90’s, and varies the break on his fastballs as well.
He could be trouble.
I've been to Beavercreek
It is a wretched place.

Well, it's Capital Pride Weekend
So your wedding might turn out to be a political occasion. Dupont Circle is one of the more renowned gay districts in the country, so it should be hopping this weekend. Plus it’s a great neighborhood in general. The Woodrow Wilson House is there on S St., which is a lovely tour, and is right by Embassy Row. Obviously the Mall is a great place, with all the Monuments, Smithsonian museums, and the Capitol. I would try to see the Building Museum (4th and F St., NW). The museum is okay, but the building itself is mightily impressive. It’s right on the border of Chinatown, and the Penn Quarter, which are decent parts of town. Hit up U St. for good Ethiopian food and Ben’s Chili Bowl. Old Town Alexandria is a nice shopping destination, and has some great old row houses. I’ll be at the DC United game on Saturday, which I still maintain is an event that everyone should experience. It’s at RFK Stadium, if you want to swing by.
Oh, I really like the National Cathedral too. It’s one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world, and a little off the beaten path. It’s up in the northwest corner of the District, off Wisconsin Ave.
I’ll try and think of some more places, but that should give you some choices. Do you know where you’re going to be staying?

Thanks for the advice
sorry i didnt respond earlier. we got to our hotel and then quickly had to run off unexpectedly. we are staying on capital st., right up the street from the new ballpark (it looks pretty nice from the outside, i must say). we only have the one day, so i really only get one big thing to do. i’d love to catch the footy match, but its not exactly high up on the to do list for Mrs. Scrabbles. ive been to a few Crew games back home and it really is an experience, even if the Crew is a joke. i think we are gonna walk down to the Mall and see the Capitol and especially the museum of the american indian. thanks again for all the advice. im going to try to convince her to get some Ethiopian food for lunch tomorrow.

If this does not put some emotion into the guys, what will?
Should be a packed house, national exposure, trying to prove we don’t suck as bad as our record suggests. Please, is it too much to ask for a BoSox beat down? Because after this, all we will be talking about is next year.

National exposure?
The only nationally televised game is on ESPN. Fox doesn’t broadcast nationally. They broadcast regionally. The Saturday afternoon game is just another way to televise the same team you’ve been watching all week on the network station. Folks in Cjicago will still get the Cubs or Sox, Los Angeles will get the Dodgers or Angels, New York will get . . . you get the idea.
So, wait
I might not get to see this game on Fox? Goddammit.

As much as I don't want to link to Daugherty,
this was a pretty good read about Bernie Carbo, who obviously played in some big games as a member of both teams. Glad to see he turned things around after some very dark times.
Just caught the last couple of batters
But he strikes me as a guy that would get hit much harder after the first time through the lineup. Hope I’m right.

They were thinking of delaying that, though. Because they want him to play SS now instead of 3B, as originally planned. I guess they think SS is harder, so he needs more rehab games. And because the freakin’ rain down in Sarasota means he’s hardly gotten any playing time.
