How many Braves pitchers can we injure today?
It’s our last chance anyhow.

not to disagree
but I actually think, barring injuries, we’ll be able to make the playoffs. The pitching has been quite good, now that we have some things figured out. And the offense is clicking, and we still have a few pieces to add when the injuries are healed.
Reds fan for 40 years!
My main point
Is that we ought to put the mindset behind us that we’re a crappy team. For instance, the ESPN power rankings had us at #25. We’re no longer at the bottom. We’ve moved up to the middle of the table. We aren’t a dominant team yet, but by God, we can beat anybody.

where they charge for parking. After 6 p.m., the parking meters on the street are free. If you get there a bit early (around 6 or 6:15 p.m.), you shouldn’t have any trouble getting a spot on the street that’s maybe 2-4 blocks south of the stadium.

dunno yet what happened
but homer either got hurt or called up, because he got taken out in the third inning tonight. he gave up 2 in the first and none in the second, then got the first two outs in the third. He then walked a batter and was taken out of the game.
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
He's coming up is my guess
In the post game interview on FSN, a reporter asked Dusty “what are you going to do about the fifth start spot?” and Dusty slipped in his answer saying, “well, whoever we bring up, I expect blahblahblahilovecorey…” which says to me that someone’s coming up . I have to think Homer’s, who else would it be?

Bailey's coming up
Hal McCoy said in a blog post earlier today that the plan was to pitch Bailey a couple innings tonight to get some work in, then he will come up and pitch Thursday afternoon against the Phillies. Of course, it’s the one game this week FSN Ohio won’t have.
Facing that vaunted lineup isn’t a good matchup for Homer. I won’t activate him this week in my fantasy baseball league.

After Flogg's last showing maybe Homer got the CALL?
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
"Was it for the Reds organization or all of baseball?" Bruce said.
The C Word's take
The lesson: This team continues to improve on small ball, whether it’s trail runners taking the extra base or Hairston’s successful squeeze play. The Reds have shown they can win without the home run—but the homers by Jay Bruce and Adam Dunn were certainly welcome.
I also heard Steve Phillips on the radio this afternoon saying that teams like Cincinnati that usually “rely” on the home run have turned things around by manufacturing. “manufacture runs.”
During the latest Reds’ home stand (not including today’s game), the team’s slugging has jumped 40+ points and the team OPS 60+.
Some muthafucka’s always trying to ice-skate uphill
Pushed "Post" too soon
but my basic point is that it’s remarkable how successful a team becomes at playing “small ball” when they’re also knocking the shit out of the ball.
Some muthafucka’s always trying to ice-skate uphill
It's almost always bullshit.
no matter what’s actually going on with a team, guys like that seem to automatically attribute success and failures to be related to small ball.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
I don't mean to pick on C
I’ve been enjoying most of his write-ups at his new blog.
It just struck me as odd that he chose “small ball” - however improved - as “the lesson” we should take from a home stand conspicuous in improved slugging.

Dear Diary
I went to the game today. It was a perfect day for a baseball game. The HR’s were awesome and Cueto was a great pitcher today. This season has gotten so that I expect the Reds to win every game. While shouting Bruce with 37K of my closest friends was fun, my favorite part of the game was the squeeze play.
Maybe I can be a doctor and a kid.

So Dusty said this
“We need the innings out of him tonight because our bullpen was spent,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “We were watching him at the 90-100 (pitch) mark and that’s where he got into trouble, but he has that extra gear to get us out of that inning. I was hoping to get more. I would have gotten more had they not hit those two home runs. I’m glad we won and he won.”does that mean Dusty wasn’t at all concerned about Cueto’s pitch count after his 119 pitch outing on Tuesday. I know we keep talking about as one reporter often utters Christ on a hubcap. The guy is only 22. Lets hope he is still around in 2011.

We were watching him at the 90-100 (pitch) mark
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
i inferred that they were watching him at 90-100
but woud have let him go deeper than 90-100 pitches if he didn’t give up the two homeruns in the 7th.

by justin007000 on Jun 1, 2008 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I inferred that if he had continued to cruise (say, a 15 pitch inning instead of a 25 pitch inning)
that he would have come back out to start the 8th.
There are lots of reasons to get upset at Dusty, but he didn’t do anything wrong today. All he said was that he wished he could have used Cueto for longer, but I”m assuming the fact that he started to slip in the 7th prevented that. I don’t see any reason to be pissed about that.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
my concern
As Cueto loses his stuff his inclination is to ratchet up the gas. His last inning he was throwing as hard as he threw all day. Those pitches can be very stressful. It was fine today. He wasn’t overworked. I just have a fear that he’ll be doing that at 120+ pitches one day.
But maybe this is me just being a fretful mother. It seems either Baker learned from his Chicago experience, or those problems were organizational or some combination thereof.
I can see your concern
The good thing Dusty did, in my mind, was that he didn’t rush Cueto into high pitch count games. He let him build up as the season has gone on, and still Cueto has only thrown 100 pitches 4 times this season. I thought the 119 pitches last game was excessive, but the only stressful inning that Cueto had today was the 7th. Maybe he could afford to ratchet it up that inning because he hadn’t had a lot of stress to that point. I’m just trying to think positive.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
I do think Dusty has demonstrated that he has a long leash with starters
The one thing that truly concerns me is the number of times he operates without a safety net. When the starters are at 100 or more pitches and he sends them out to start an inning, but doesn’t have anyone warming in the pen in case the starters begin to struggle, that worries me. It’s fine to challenge your starters and push them, but they’re not always going to be able to overcome those challenges that late in the game, and Dusty’s lack of a “Plan B” costs us wins.
Or say, burning your long reliever in an extra inning game after two batters so that you have to use your starters.
by Brendanukkah on Jun 1, 2008 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions
i wasn't that upset about the 119 pitches on Tuesday
mostly because it took him 5 innings to do it, I would have been upset if it were a 7, 8, or 9 inning outing.

Just got home and watched the game on tivo.
WOW. This team is unstoppable.
And Jeff Brantley is still bad. Bad. Bad. Bad.
I'm as excited about this team as I've been all year
But it is worth remembering that Atlanta is just 7-21 on the road this year. The big test will be the series in Philadelphia. The Phillies are currently the top team in the NL East, and we’ve been a pretty bad road team this season. But the team is the strongest it’s been all year. Let’s see what we can do. If we win this series, then I’ll start making arrangements to print up playoff t-shirts.

Ironic
I was listening to Steve Phillips and Ron Incognito(?) talking about this subject this afternoon. They seemed pretty certain it had to do with young players being inexperienced on the road.
For some reason, I kept expecting them to take a look at the average ages/actual numbers of new young players this year compared to years previous (as this gentleman has done), but of course they seemed pretty happy to stick with that vague premise.
After spending all my time with you fucks, I find it frustrating to listen to baseball discussed in that kind of forum.
