This team has a penchant for walking off
I thought this might be a fun little compilation. The Reds lead the majors in walk-offs this season (7), and it can be kind of hard to remember all of them. There have been three walk-off homers by the Reds this year, and each walk-off hit was delivered by a different Red.
Since Major League Baseball is governed by Tony Womack and his minions, I can't post any nice embedded videos. But here are the links to all 7 walk-offs. Enjoy!
- May 31: Jay "The Boss" Bruce homers (first career home run) to beat the Braves
- May 30: Brandon Phillips single Error on Chipper Jones, scoring Jay Bruce to beat the Braves
- May 17: Adam Dunn homers to beat the Indians
- May 14: Paul Janish singles (first career hit), scoring Johnny Cueto to beat the Marlins
- April 20: Ken Griffey Jr. doubles in Ryan Freel to beat the Brewers
- April 5: Paul Bako singles in Ryan Freel to beat the Phillies
- April 2: Edwin Encarnacion (not a clutch player) homers to beat the Diamondbacks

Wow
And I thought Yankees fans hated Tony Womack. I thought we were being mean by calling him “Woe-mack.”

Late inning heroics are a sign of a winning team.
I don’t have the stats but those teams that find a way to come back and oinsistantly win in late late innings are contenders by the end of the season.

Not to be a smartass
but teams that consistently win are contenders. That goes without saying.
But the 2003 team had 40 comeback wins, including 13 walk off wins. They were 30-21 in one-run games. They were 15-5 in extra innings. They finished the season at 69-93. The reason? They were 9-29 in blowouts (games decided by 5 or more runs).
Good teams aren’t evident based on how they play in the close ones. They are evident in the blow outs. This year’s team is 9-11 in blowouts. If they are going to become serious contenders in the race, they need to get on the winning side of blowouts more often. A team’s record in close games tends to even out over a season, but good teams (i.e. teams with good offense and pitching) will win more blowouts.

haven't we had a few of those seasons of late?
teams that have a lot of comeback wins have pitchers that put then in a hole early, hence the need to come back. yesterday was case in point.
what is considered a blowout? i am surprised they have that many this season.
what we need to start doing is winning on the road. i am so happy there are no more west coast trips this year.

a blowout is a game decided by 5+ runs
but that’s just the number that I got from Baseball Reference. I’m sure there are plenty of cases where good teams win lots of 3 run game and such. My real point is that close games are as much luck and timely events as anything. Over a full season, good teams are consistently outscoring their opponents by a lot, though there are always exceptions (2008 Diamondback for instance).
And yes, the Reds have had a lot of teams like that lately. A lot of that is due to pitching that gives up leads on a regular basis. Good bullpens shut the other team down when they have the lead. The Reds are still working on building one of those.

I knew I should’ve ‘looked it up’ before I posted!
