Baseball Prospectus writer and editor Joe Sheehan appears on the most recent edition of Bill Simmons' podcast for ESPN to discuss many things stats related in baseball.

Although Sheehan doesn't go into minute detail, I think it might serve as an excellent primer for people here who are interested in exploring - or just having a working map of - the fever swamps of statistical analysis in baseball, but maybe don't feel like reading a lot about it.

He gives the context for why certain stats are currently seen as more important than others and touches on issues past, present, and future. (I thought his short discussion about the possibility of health-related or injury-related performance projections was quite interesting)

Even though Simmons isn't a great interviewer ("Okay, well, hey, let me ask you this..."), I think he actually manages to be a pretty effective interlocutor in this instance. I wasn't holding out much hope, considering his podcast with Aaron Schatz from Football Outsiders last year devolved pretty quickly into Massholism and Simmons claiming credit for thinking up stats that already exist. But, as I said, there seems to be less of that here. Or maybe Sheehan just parries it well.*

Warning, it's around 45 minutes long:

(*Simmons seems to have been ignorant of Line Drive Percentage: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/statpages/glossary/#ld%)

Simmons

Simmons is fine for what he is-basketball, sports frattiness, fandom-but when you put him in a room with someone who knows a thing or two about baseball he gets embarrassed quickly. My favorite part was when he asked why they don’t come up with some sort of “pretty swing” stat for when a player is hitting the ball well but not getting results. Sheehan was like, “Um… well there’s line drive percentage.” “Oh they have that?”

He seemed kind of bored

He’s gone on record as saying he really only cares about the American League, and then mostly only the Red Sox. Maybe the other AL East teams, since they’re potential Sox opponents. He only really came alive and got engaged when he turned the discussion to basketball.

I still read all his stuff, listen to most of the podcasts, and overall respect what he was able to do in those first years on espn.com. But he has just gotten to be so dreadful, and really not that much of a fan of sports beyond basketball. All things pass…

My problem

I was extremely surprised by how thin his schtick really was after he went national. He hasn’t really grown any as a writer.

But he’s still great for things like this podcast, he’s the only guy at ESPN I can think of who can get the go ahead to talk to Joe Sheehan for 50 minutes in this type of format.

Haven't listened yet to this yet,

but he did a good job talking buckets with Ric Bucher last year. Bucher let his guard down a bit and made some interesting and candid observations about the league and Kobe.

That ‘review’ sounds incredibly pompous.
