Never thought I'd be able to say this...

Three Reds starters are in the MLB top-10 in strikeouts, with one of them leading the way with 52.

I can’t remember when we had a starting staff that got as many swings and misses as this one, and Homer isn’t even up with the big club yet.

I also can’t remember when we ever had a starting staff with two guys who have fastballs that sit around 94-96 mph.

At least it wasn't Grady Little.

by Paul Householder on May 7, 2008 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

I know it!

That’s what makes the team’s early offensive woes so dagnab frustrating

by rojosoto on May 7, 2008 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Run support

Volquez now with 44 runs in support over 7 starts
Cueto only 19 runs scored in his 7 starts

Media keeps saying Harang has the worst team run support, but Cueto has him beat in that department.

by rojosoto on May 7, 2008 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

I'd call Harang's 22 over 8 starts just as bad.

Arroyo has 28 in 7 starts
Foggy had 19 in 3 starts
Belisle has 14 in 3 starts

If only we could move Arroyo’s, Fogg’s, and Belisle’s runs to Cueto and Harang, we’d be at .500. And 2 of every 5 games would be awful to watch.

by jch24 on May 7, 2008 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

And then...

What happens with all of EVs runs that he didn’t need having an ERA of 1.06. He hasn’t needed very many of those 44 runs.

Nothing more frustrating to me than a team hitting everything when the starting pitcher doesn’t need it.

Very nice the Reds returned the shutout favor. Helps when the Cubs left 12 on base though too..

by snohio on May 7, 2008 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Harang vs. Cueto

Right, they both getting little. They were making that claim (that Harang had worst support on the team) before last night’s game.
Cueto was 19 in 7 and Harang was 22 in 7. Not a big difference, and they were just trying to justify Harang’s 1-4 record.

The Reds have scored 4 runs in three of Harang’s starts and 5 runs in a 4th start.
The Reds have scored 3 runs in three of Cueto’s starts and 5 runs in a 4th start, the only Cueto start with more than 3 Reds runs scored.

i think he is a good pitcher

and with Cueto going 6, and Harang and EV going 7 the bullpen is well rested to mop up after Belisle and Arroyo.

did anyone see Ankiel throw out Wily Taveras?

Taveras tagged up from 2nd and Ankiel threw it from the warning track. Taveras, being an ALS, should make that base standing up. i wish MLB allowed shit like this on the YouTube, cuz i need to see that again. they should make him a pitcher with that kind of arm.
