Farmers only ponder the return of Homer Bailey

Question of the day: Homer Bailey had a nice but not terrific start last night -- I wouldn't be surprised if he's bored. If Walt wants to go with a youth movement and calls up Homer tomorrow, who should he jettison? Belisle? Fogg? Arroyo in a trade?

Homer Bailey
Bailey

Triple-A: Jay Bruce was 2 for 4 and Jolbert Cabrera added a home run but the Bats gave little else in support of Homer Bailey in a 4-1 loss to Norfolk. Homer was not bad -- allowing 4 runs and 7 singles in 7 innings, striking out 7 -- but the Bats scattered only 4 other, non-mentioned hits. UP NEXT: Game 2 at Norfolk, 7:15 tonight.

Double-A: Former Notre Dame wideout Jeff Samardzija had his way with the Lookouts, striking out 5 and allowing just 4 hits in Tennessee's 6-1 win over Chattanooga. Sam Lecure (1-2) struck out 6 in 5 innings but allowed 8 hits and 5 runs, and Shaun Cumberland and Sean Henry had a hit each. UP NEXT: Game 2 vs. Tennessee, 7:15 tonight.

Brandon Waring
Waring

High A: Jordan Smith allowed just 1 run in 8 innings, but Palm Beach beat the S-Reds 2-1 in the ninth. Smith's a 22-year-old with only 31 strikeouts in 47 innings, but he's only walked 5 all year. Chris Valaika's 13-game hitting streak was snapped, but he drew  a couple walks.  Sarasota managed just 3 hits. UP NEXT:  Game 4 at Palm Beach, 6:35 tonight.

Low A: Todd Frazier was 2 for 3 and Brandon Waring homered with 4 RBIs as Dayton won 9-2. Justin Reed went 4 for 4 and was a triple away from the cycle. UP NEXT: Game 2 vs. Quad Cities, 7 tonight.

im going to go with fogg

ive been touting a bronson trade for a while, but right now his stock is too low to sell. Plus given his clean bill of health, i have to think he’ll get this figured out. I havent given up on belisle, although i dont think he’ll be much more than a No. 4 starter. But Fogg has been garbage, and he was a Sweaterpants hire. Jocketty isn’t attached to him, and i think he can get a free pass for letting Fogg - and his million-dollar contract - go.

I'd dump Valentin

and move Fogg into the third catcher role. Would anybody notice the difference? I mean, besides Valentin and Fogg?

BTW, LLM hasn’t started a game since April 16th. He’s had 8 at bats in the last 3 weeks. Why does he have a roster spot again? Heck, the Reds are 2-14 in games that he’s played in, so it’s not even like he’s good luck.

for defensive purposes

Fogg would definitely be a defensive upgrade over Valentine. Plus, wouldn’t a pitcher be good at calling games? Let’s just get rid of catchers and let off-day pitchers catch.

Without looking it up

Let’s see if you can name the three players besides Cherry Hudson Jr who have put up an OPS over .800 in Louisville this year. I was hoping to find some offensive help down there, but the pickings look slim.

hmm

Jay Bruce
Kevin Barker (Triple-A Lifer)
Alvin Colina ?

I know Andy Green and Andy Phillips haven’t been all that good, and Dickerson started real real slow. Janish is not quite there with the bat yet.

Bruce and Barker

and Hanigan, who has only had 28 ABs. Barker has the highest OPS at .851. The highest OPS for a RH hitter in Louisville, besides Hanigan, is Jolbert Cabrera at .726. Outside of Bruce, there aren’t a lot of reinforcements in Louisville, and even Bruce has been struggling of late.

WHAT!

My radio tells me there’s all sorts of folk ready to step in for Dunn and Junior. And we should give them away for nothing and bring up the kids to play. You telling me that there are few kids in AAA who can play?

I maintian

what I’ve thought all along. Belisle is better suited for the bullpen. Arroya is starting to pitch like his music, and Fogg is jetsom, or is it flotsam, I don’t know, but either way he’s driftwood. I say wait until Arroya gets a couple of W’s and try to get a couple of double A guys for him. A change of scenery might do him some good for about 20 starts before he reverts to Taco Meat Filling.

by Pops Daniels on May 6, 2008 8:15 AM EDT reply reply   0 recs

Belizzle

I think he is actually not better suited for the bullpen.

I remember when we had this sort of discussion a couple of years ago. They put Belizzle in the bullpen, and he stank fo shizzle, so a bunch of us here thought that maybe he was better suited as a starter. His problems with runners on and pitching from the stretch, plus his back problems, I think, led us to that conclusion.

So we were optimistic when he was made a starter.

I think Belizzle may be able to put up league average numbers as a starter. As a reliever, he seems to be a “backbreaker run” (that extra run or five that the other team scores when you’re trailing late, but close enough to make it a game still) or an injury waiting to happen.

The reason we may be thinking of putting him back in the bullpen is that he has stunk fo shizzle as a starter this year on a number of occasions, but I think he will stink even worse if we do that.

At least it wasn't Grady Little.

Colorado wants Fogg back?

I read over at Reds Zone quoting a Denver newspaper that the Rox are interested in reacquiring Fogg, that he would get a “standing ovation” in the club house if her returned. He’s well-liked there. That might be on opportunity.

How about trading Fogg, calling up Bailing, putting Arroyo in long relief until he finds his stuff again. I’m sure Jockety is interested in my opinion.

by Mark T on May 6, 2008 9:59 AM EDT reply reply   0 recs

That would work for me

The Rockies are the only team in baseball worse than the Reds, and his World Series cache might mean they would actually want him back. If Jocketty can get something for him, then I’m all for it. If not, we can stash Fogg in the minors (or Belisle if Fogg doesn’t have options), but Bailey absolutely needs to be in the majors. He demonstrated skill last year, and this year should be all about honing that skill at a major league level. The situation demands a youth movement.

Reading back

I don’t know about moving Arroyo to the bullpen. I’d rather just have him skip a turn to clear his head (or focus him with the indignity of having his turn skipped), and then let him work himself out.

by Brendanukkah on May 6, 2008 10:04 AM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

skipping a turn and being pushed back helped him last year

i know he says his arm is sound, and I am inclined to believe that because his velocity is 88-91, where it has always been. Could he be having back problems? That would explain why everything is up, and his curvball isn’t breaking. It would be hard to have command if you can’t follow through on your pitches.

it is just hard to understand how he can be this bad

I know that 2006 was a career year. Last year was more of a normal Bronson year and he was solid except for that 10 start period in May and June. He hans’t had a noticable loss of velocity, or i guess he did but the velocity is back up. There should be a reason for this.

i think the reason is a small sample size

he’s only made 7 starts… that’s not a lot.

he was pushed back for that last start

a lot of good it did him, pitching on seven days rest.

i thought that orriginally they planned to push his start back

but he pitched 6 innings and didn’t get shelled while Cueto was shelled, so they switched Arroyo back to his normal rest and pushed Cueto back.

Arroyo’s problems in day games might have to with being a rock star the night before. I heard that hookers and blow result in hanging breaking balls

Honestly though

I am waiting for Bronson to begin pitching decently for the sole purpose of moving him later. I just don’t believe he is going to be anything better than a 5th starter, and I agree with the previous postings that Homer needs to be up. I am fine with having Matt Belisle pitch every 5th day if we do trade Bronson

If he can regain his 2006 form, then great. However, at this point i think we should give Homer the opportunity up here and see what we can get in return for Arroyo.

I realize

That at his best Bronson is a servicable middle of the rotation, innings-eater type of guy and my dislike of him is probably mostly unfounded, but i just cannot buy into him. It seems like he goes up there and flips up junk off speed pitches over and over and hitters are just not getting fooled anymore.

When his stuff was off in the past, he managed to minimalize the damage. This year it’s like opening the floodgates.

Bronson is a good pitcher

the 4 years of his career in which he has been a full-time starter (2004-2007) he has been solidly above average, posting ERA+ of 121, 100, 142, and 110. WHIPs in those years: 1.22, 1.3, 1.19, and 1.4. he is definately worth the money we are paying him, even if last year (his “down” year) is what we can reasonably expect from him. you admit your “dislike of him is probably mostly unfounded”. he had one bad month. not only is it a bad idea to trade him now because we need him, but because we wouldnt get value for him. this organization now has 6 serviceable starters and we will need every one of them, if not more, to get through the season. lets show a little patience.

Homer pitched well last night.

Those 7 hits were all singles. Three walks is one too many for a 7-inning performance, but he still pitched well and had his K-rate up again.

by Blue on May 6, 2008 1:43 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

Agreed

Bailey was hurt by some home town scoring. 3 of those hits and two of those runs should have been unearned and uncounted. Rosales had one hit his glove and stop at his feet, but he turned and looked behind him for it. Scorer ruled it a single. Kevin Barker had a similar one hit his glove that stayed in the infield go for a single. Then Drew Anderson lost one in the lights that landed three feet in front of him as he stood there looking for it. Since he didn’t touch it, it was also ruled a hit. His line looked a lot worse than his actual pitching was.
