Braves fan on Marty
Shysterball Braves fan takes notice of how negative Marty is on air.
Unfortunately, I was listening to Marty Brennaman, and that poor bastard has simply lost it. Look, we all hate to listen to homer announcers, and we all find it refreshing when the guys in the booth tell the tough truths. Brennaman, however, is long past that stage and is deep into angry and bitter disgust with the Redlegs. Sure, the seven-run second inning would be tough on anyone, but Brennaman made it sound like he was being forced to watch the commission of war crimes. He sounds like a man who truly hates his job, and truly hates the Reds.
...
Perhaps the most telling thing was the fact that I was actually happy when Jeff Brantley took over next inning.
This is really sad, and I agree totally. I used to think Marty and Joe were some of the greatest and loved the radio. Up until last year I would pay for gameday audio. Now I can't stand to listen to broadcasts. Terrible.

I agree he probably hates the team at this point
But in his defense Marty has endured some incredibly crap-tacular seasons in the last twenty years. For a guy who’s nearing the end of the road, it has to be pretty discouraging.

the man gets paid to watch and talk about baseball games
No matter how bad the team is I couldn’t complain about the job itself. He has a dream job.

how do you know it wouldn’t get old? have you been a baseball broadcaster?

I sort of agree with daedalus
Complaining about your job probably has as much to do with your personality as the job itself. This applies to professional athletes as well. Any job will have facets of it that are annoying or dull. Some will be able to keep the privilege of their positions always at the forefront. Others will not.
Think about all the travel and repetition and constant exposure that being an athlete or a broadcaster entails. Think about the drudgery of not just watching so many shitty games, but having to talk through them.
I’m not a fan of Marty, and I do think his rants are unprofessional at best (ill-informed and spiteful at worst), but I’m not naieve enough to think that any job won’t get old at times. Again, you could give a curmudgeon the best job in the world and he’d find a reason to complain about it. Look at Kornheiser re: MNF
'cause something is happening here, but you don't know what it is.

Ok Tony Kornheiser and Skip Bayliss
should have nothing to complain about. They both make a killing just saying what is on their mind on a hot sports issue. Both do little to no research on the topic as well. I like Kornheiser more than Bayliss because he doesn’t take himself too seriously. I can’t stand ESPNs “Hot Seat” when they bring Skip Bayliss or Steven A. Smith on it…ugh.

Do we really need another "Bash Marty" thread?
I listened to the game yesterday, and the second inning comments this is referencing. He said nothing innapropriate, and he said nothing that wasn’t true. Sure he used some hyperbole, when he said that this team may never win again, but when your pitcher puts up a performance like that it has to be irritating. I’m glad he wasn’t on the air trying to put a positive spin on Bronson being terrible.
This is really tiring. It seems like we have more posts about bashing Marty Brennaman on here than we do about UK basketball!

not to be too argumentative with you
because we have gone back and forth a little more frequently than usual lately, but i dont really see this as bashing marty. there’s no doubt he’s changed and has become totally bitter toward the team. He rarely has a nice thing to say about the best players and often bashes them for their faults, no matter how small. he’s gotten unlistenable, in my opinion, just because of his extreme negativity. I realize he’s your broadcasting idol, and he deserves that for how great he was for a long time. But the guy you grew up idolizing is not the same guy who anchors the Reds’ broadcast crew now.

maybe not..
but i still consider it a treat to get to listen to marty on the radio. He’s still extremely entertaining and he makes me laugh. aside from this site, he may be the thing i like most about the reds.

I think Marty re-upped.
So he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
The Reds made a trade to bring in Marty’s son last year and nothing changed about Marty’s temperament.
This year he has already ho-hummed through Cueto and Volquez’s starts while pooh-poohing Joey Votto.
There really is no defense for Marty Breneman at this point. Other than acknowlegding that for some reason God still has to populate this planet with a certain number of arrogant fuckface bastard assholes.

“Hello ? Mount my Manhood you freak ….Listen pal, you don’t know shit about baseball – you and your Red Fucking reporters are bunch of subversive asses. you don’t anything about how the game is played or about the men who made the game great, And I’m not talking Adam Dunn brother…Dusty, and Hopper and Chad Moeller and those guys who know how to play the game the right way – That’s Reds baseball. So just sit in your ivory tower and wish that you were half the man that Juan Castro is.” So see ya later Schmoo – Marty.

Marty the Critic
How would you feel if were in a baseball version of Groundhog Day? Eeach new season is supposed to be the oner the Reds start winning and every year it’s the same old losing. I get pretty grumpy when the Reds lose games and blow chances because they have no clue how to do the little things like bunt, hit the cutoff man, field passed balls, not get picked off base after you just stole it and follow the signs.

Learn piano, Marty!
Wasn’t the lesson of Groundhog Day that you have to change what you can control, namely yourself, in order to have a positive impact on the world around you? Marty is Phil at the constantly killing himself phase.

Postive
I will say at times I wish Marty could be a bit more postive when the team/players do well.

Even I'm losing my optimism this season!
And that’s saying something. I’ve been backing Coffey based on 3 months for the last 2 years. I’ve backed Jason LaRue because his catchers ERA was much better than the other catchers. I’ve backed Dunn during his 0-for-September monhs. I’ve backed Arroyo until his last start, thinking he’ll come back out of it. I backed Stormy through his numb-arm period.
And it’s getting tiring! I think that Marty’s finally had it. He watches these guys day after day and just sees the same things. Maybe he needs to go to his zen place for a month and return, refreshed. With a new crop of AAA players to critique!

that's a bit rich
From the Braves? Wow. My DirecTIVO recorded the Braves feed on Saturday, with Skip Caray and Joe Simpson. Those guys made Brantley look like a genius. Simpson was going ballistic the whole time—Skip had to interrupt him to keep him from using off-color colloquialisms. They both reminded me why I hate the Braves. Every Reds hit was just lucky; every Braves pop-up was “hit really well, right on the screws.” Freel makes a nice catch, and they are all over him for diving when unnecessary.
Marty’s got issues, no doubt. But to have the Braves fans dissing the Reds broadcasters borders on ridiculous.
Give me Jon Miller and Dave Fleming. Krukow and Kuiper are pretty good too.

I didn't even know Calcaterra was a Braves fan before this post.
He lives in Columbus. And as MM pointed out last weekend the Braves do have Boog Sciambi doing play by play sometimes.

FWIW
I grew up a fanatical Marty Brennaman fan. I’m out of the area, so I’ve paid for MLB Audio the last several years. This year I didn’t. I’m tired of hearing Marty, as sad as that is to say. There’s nothing better than hearing him call a game-winner (e.g., Dunner’s walkoff granny), but there’s also nothing worse than hearing him tell me how bad the Reds are when I’m already at the height of my frustration.
by greg456 on May 5, 2008 10:05 PM EDT 0 recs
FWIW 2
Marty needs Joe Nuxhall. Marty would start to get fired up, then Joe would come in for an inning or so and spew love and hearts and puppy dogs, and Marty would calm down. Or he wouldn’t calm down, he’d just sound like he did after we got a breather from good ol’ Joe.
Then, they brought in two of the most needlessly pissed-off people in the world, Thom and Brantley, and now it sounds like Marty is up there chewing concrete.
The best thing in the world the Reds could do after Marty retires is to find the most genial, beloved ex-ballplayer still alive and fire Brantley. Look the other way when said ex-ballplayer mangles names, screws up home run calls and generally acts like a homer.
Marty/Thom need a yin to their yang. Otherwise, it’s yang out the yang.
