Bronson

I think he has to come out of the rotation, even if it is only for a couple of starts. Harang, Volquez, Cueto, Belisle and ?? And that includes Belisle being on a very short leash. Bring up Bailey and/or whoever. Make this like 1990 for the Braves when they had Avery (20), Smoltz (23), Glavine (24) and Mercker (22) on the staff.

Dustball wants to get Arroyo checked out

I have to agree with Dusty. Arroyo claims he is completely healthy but I remember hearing that from Paul Wilson in 2005 and a year later from Brandon Claussen. But his velocity was there today, he was hitting 91, and he did the same in his last start. But arm injuries can also effect command, the only time I saw Arroyo pitch was in person from row N at PNC park, so I can’t really say much about it, but if Dusty is to be believed his curveball is more of a bp fastball.

At least it wasn't the offense today...

Now the Reds are proving they can lose in all sorts of ways, 14-7, 9-1 and 2-0.

The one thing they haven’t had a lot of is the bullpen coughing up the lead late in the game. They’ve come close, but thus far Cordero has been there to slam the door.

I guess that’s one thing that’s better from last year.

At least it wasn't Grady Little.

by Paul Householder on May 4, 2008 7:35 PM EDT reply actions

Of course, I'm sure...

That some wiseass is thinking that the only reason the bullpen hasn’t coughed up the lead a lot is that the Reds are not often in the lead. That is also probably true.

At least it wasn't Grady Little.

Louisville lost to Richmond

In 11 innings. Giving up the winning walkoff single (and a double and a walk to set it up) was…Todd Coffey.

2 I’m ready for a knock-down, drag-out clubhouse fight. No holds barred (so long as the good pitchers don’t hurt their arms). Who’s with me on violence?

how long until we root for a higher draft pick in 2009?

I still think if this team sheds its spare parts in Hatteberg, Fropper, Patterson, Valentine, Fogg, Weathers, moves Belisle to relief, and lets Bailey learn on the fly (if he comes up and struggles at again I don’t think sending him to AAA is the answer, because his problem will be that he just needs to learn how to get big league hitters out). Maybe put the relief arms in the fast lane, and Arroyo can right himself this team could be in decent shape for 2009. Plus if they lose every game for the rest of the season they will get a first overal draft pick, and that would help, because Jocketty is such a good drafter.

every once in a while i need to be reminded wjhy Rob Dibble is an idiot

This is from ESPN.com after Bowden was fired.

“Jim Bowden always got the better end of the deals he made. He knew how to get other GMs to give up their talent in return for whatever he was offering. He did a great job with the Reds on what was mainly a shoestring budget. His firing was a direct result of an ownership that has no clue how to run a baseball team.

It wasn’t surprising when Carl Linder, who was a minority owner of the Reds until former majority owner Marge Schott was ousted, told everyone he would return the Reds to prominence. He then spent a ton of money trading for Ken Griffey Jr., but only threw that “spending” theory out the window. Now, he’s once again spending next to nothing. I guess he was hoping Bowden could create miracles out of some washed-up pitchers. Personally, I’d take Marge Schott over Carl Linder seven days a week and twice on Sundays. Schott was a shrewd businesswoman who was always accessible to the fans of Cincinnati and was willing to spend top-dollar on free agents. She cared about the product—the team. Bowden’s untimely and unwarranted departure was a direct result of him lacking the funds necessary to win. With a new ballpark, had Bowden been given a little more cash to put a team together, he would still be the general manager.

Bowden is also not solely responsible for the Griffey trade. A few years ago, Griffey was on his way to the Hall of Fame. Now, he’ll be lucky to hit 500 home runs in his career. Heck, the Reds built the Great American Ballpark mostly to help Griffey break Hank Aaron’s home run record. It’s not Bowden’s fault the Reds ended up with one of the most fragile players in recent memory. “
