Game 56 Thread: Reds vs. Braves

Last night's win guaranteed a winning May for the Reds, but that doesn't mean they should rest on their 14-12 laurels. I could go for a big win today, say by 8-10 runs. It may be hard as Jurrjens has been pitching well for the Braves, but all things are possible with Bruce.

west coast trips shouldn't count - they're evil
without that trip, the reds were 12-7 in may. i’ll take months like that for the rest of the season.

No comment on whether it’s us who need to beware, or them…
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Ugh don't get me started.
I think that whole “Negro Leagues Draft” thing is just a lame dog-and-pony show that is pandering and quite frankly insulting.
According to MLB.com. "the individuals selected will represent all the black ballplayers that were denied a chance to play in the Majors because of their skin color."
Umm, yeah. They were denied their chance to play in the major because MLB ownership and players were a bunch of racist bastards.
You wanna know what MLB could do that would really honor the Negro Leaguers? Slap a big fat asterisk on ALL MLB records from before 1947. Call it the ‘Segregation Era’ and don’t consider anything a ‘Modern Era’ record unless it happened in 1947 and beyond.
To me, records from before 1947 are much more tainted than anything from the Steroid Era.
by cesarhernandez on May 31, 2008 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions
really?
I agree it was pure racist motives but I don’t think you can dismiss the whole history of baseball up to that point.
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
Don't dismiss it
but just count all those records as Segregation Era records, not Modern records. Just think of how different, and less competitive, MLB would be right now with no players of color…no blacks, latinos, etc….

So
who is the HR king?
Ruth segregation era
Aaron integration era
Bonds Steroid era
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
Well there ya go
Aaron is the most legitimate choice I guess. Of course, we don’t know how many of those homers Bonds hit were against ‘roided up pitchers. So the advantage that Bonds got from steroids may not be as significant as people think.

How long is Griffey gonna be allowed to hit 3rd?
He’s really hurting us.
by Nick Papageorgio on May 31, 2008 2:58 PM EDT reply actions
So we should trade him here?

That would help us and hurt them, especially if they leave him at 3rd.

prediction
fogg will have a great game.
for all his faults, i still feel bad for him having to sit most of the time. i think he’ll be fired up today.
Jurrjens, that's a kind of hand lotion isn't it?
Guess the Braves must get it for free.
Where have you gone, Johnny Vander Meer?
I heard that too
what are the Reds going to do after that? pray for rain?
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
That's the problem

honestly, shearn wouldnt be doing any better than fogg
he gave up lots of walks and lots of homers and didnt strike guys out, and he got a lot of run support and went 3-0. he’s a 30-year-old journeyman and is not above a replacement-player level
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
But he would be cheaper.

Therefore...
Fogg < Shearn < Thompson/Homer
I agree. Fogg and Shearn would suck equally bad, but we wouldn’t get as mad at Shearn, because he would be making about $700,000 less than Fogg.

they should pinch hit for him
in the bottom of the inning, if he can even get there. This guy is worthless
dont see why they can't dump him now
he’s proven he’s worthless. He has the worst era on the team by a large margin, worse than coffey, lincoln, or belisle. Shouldn’t be playing on this team anymore—I don’t see why Homer can’t be the 5th starter. Seems like a decent role for him and all our other young players seem to be working out so far.
I think I am going to have to invent a new statistic...

Hmm…
Foggie has given up two home runs today.
Even the outs he’s getting are hard-hit balls.

you know what would be fun?
if Dusty decided to just abuse the hell out of Fogg for the rest of the year. Like, warm him up every single time the bullpen gets started. Leave him in for like, as many pitches as possible (200+?) in blowouts, and just do as much as he can to make sure Fogg gets injured.
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
how is fogg still in a reds uniform?
I’d like to hear people say it’s okay because he’s only making $1 million.
greatest Atl Brave ever?
It has to be Aaron, even playing a long time in Milwaukee
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
9 years
yeah, not bad at all. I dunno, though. If you just look at Aaron’s career in atlanta, i would still probably put chipper ahead. For the longevitiy more than anything
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
I'd still take him
no disrespect to Chipper. Is Chipper ahead of him in many categories for his career?
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
but it wasnt an argument over who has the better career
if it’s who’s the best player to have played in an atlanta braves uniform, then it’s aaron, no question. But the issue is who did the most with the atlanta braves. Hank had an amazing 9 years in atlanta, but it doesnt match chipper’s 15 seasons so far.
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
Wouldn't Smoltz, Glavine, or Maddux
go ahead of Chipper? Or are they just looking at hitters?
by Brendanukkah on May 31, 2008 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions
i think just hitters
it’s kinda hard to distinguish between those three guys, anyway. They’re pretty much smoltzglavinemaddux

Why not start Affeldt
If he just pitched his standard season, his numbers would still be better than Fogg or the human batting tee we just sent down.
because then Mercker or Bray is your top lefty out of the pen
and while neither of them are Schack or Stanton…they ain’t Alan Embree either.
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
Phew.
Affeldt pitching not terribly. Josh Fogg, I hope you choke.
"My wife ain't never ran and got me no pheasant." - Fistbands
I still like Affeldt over Homer right now
although i understand the lefty bullpen argument, especially since Bill Bray is not as effective against lefties as he is RH batters this year. But, if the reports about Bailey being aloof and laconic are true, I really think it would be a bad move in the long term to reward the young Bailey for his behavior with a promotion to the big club.
2 hottest hitters up
gotta like this situation
of course
So does The Boss, but we can hope that they can ride out the hot streak as long as they can
Now would be a nice time for the first HR of many...
