Game 54: Reds vs. Pirates
Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds, May 29, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
|
|
|
Since Aaron Harang's last start, the offense has scored 9 runs 3 times and 7 runs another time. They've scored over 5 runs just once this year for Harang. I think they owe him one.
And what better player to do it on than Dr. Dūm? For those that may have forgotten, Dumatrait posted a 15.00 ERA in 18 innings for the Reds last season. In four of his six starts he didn't make it to the fifth inning. In his last start with the Reds, he didn't record an out. That pitcher better show up tonight. He owes us one.
This kid's been good luck to us, so he will continue to get his picture on the thread until that changes:

This Dumatrait guy
Issues a lot of walks. Let’s hope the same patience the Reds had last night leads to a lot of first inning runs again!
Dr. Phil is dead meat.
Die Hard’s first MLB Home Run tonight.
"When I got my award, I just wore my usual stuff," Dunn said.
"Was it for the Reds organization or all of baseball?" Bruce said.
Die Hard = John McClaine = Bruce Willis = Jay Bruce

Here's where we see how much the 18 inning game hurt us
Arroyo was fine on three days rest. We should have a definite advantage if Harang wasn’t too taxed by throwing 4 innings between starts.
Yeah, but
It’s Dumatrait. Even if Belisle was pitching, I’d expect us to beat him. If we can’t, then we are unworthy of a ten game home winning streak.

i think more importantly
what’s up with EdE? is he still not feeling great or is this punishment for his slump? because if they are sitting him for the slump i would imagine this is the one game and the one pitcher that could do everything imaginable to pull him out of it.

The Yankees thought he was a butcher anywhere except 1B
He started at SS and was moved down the defensive spectrum until he landed at 1B. Where his bat was a problem. He’s a good hitter, but not a Big Papi or Jason Giambi type hitter.
However, when he was sent down to Scranton last year, he played a lot of 2B. And the Bats have been using him at 3B and 2B a lot.
I’m wondering if he just needed some coaching. One thing you notice about the Yankees system…they only teach players how to hit. The kids come up very raw. Forget baserunning, bunting, defense, etc. Maybe no one bothered to teach Andy. (I have sometimes wondered if Bubba’s nice glove was because he came up mostly in the Dodgers’ system.)
To us Yankees fans, Andy looked terrific on defense at 1B. But I wonder if that was just because we’re so used to bloody awful defense. My favorite defensive stat, BP’s rate, actually shows him as being below average at 1B. There was some debate over why that was. Some thought he had a deceptively small range, and thus made easy plays look harder than they were. Others thought he was very solid, except he sometimes got crossed up on his footwork, and said it was something that could be fixed by coaching.

Curious to know what everyone thinks we should do when Kepp comes back?? I say put him back at short (duh), and leave Hairston leading off and playing third base. (or right field after trading Griffey)

"Here's to you, Mr. Ceremonial First First Pitch Thrower Outer"
I dunno
I love his bat, but he’s not very good at SS. But then, Hairston isn’t any better. If Kepp comes back before A-Gon, it will be have to be Kepp at SS. Unless Janish breaks out.

Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
the worst part is that they won't get back to .500 on this homestand

Evening, ladies and gentlemen
Been watching on FSP, and the homeplate ump has been brutal, and quite inconsistent, especially to the REDS. But Harang wasn’t keeping the ball down, and we hit everything right at people.
I hate losing.
Reds fan for 40 years!
well, even the good teams lose every now and then
and the bad ones have a lot more now and thens.
And I just realized this loss puts the Reds back in last place. Turds.

I've turned off the audio
How long till Brantley makes an excuse that closers have a hard time pitching when the game is not on the line?

Grande
How big is that play now. If the runner is on the game is a lot closer.
No shit?

if 7 runners had scored there, the Reds would have won.

Wow
I can’t believe he got out of that unscathed.
But Cherry got doubled off again?

It's tempting...
...to say Dumatrait always dominates Triple-A teams. But he’s actually pitched very well for the Pirates this season. Including against teams that are playing well, like the Cubs.

They put him on waivers
and tried to ship him back to Louisville. But he didn’t clear waivers. Pittsburgh claimed him.
Here’s what I said about it, last October:
Dumatrait looked so good at the beginning of the season in Louisville. But he got a fairly good shot in the big leagues later in the season, and was pretty awful. Though watch him turn into Cy Dumatrait with the Bucs. If only while pitching against the Reds.

What will it take for your Andy Phillips predictions to pan out?
Unfortunately, I don’t think we’re going to see much from that young man.
did he have to drop the kids off at the pool?

Well, at least Fogg is nice and rested
And in the choice between burning one pitcher and saving the other, you gotta save Fogg every time.
