Patterson Optioned!
And the good news keeps rolling! Hopefully we don't see him back anytime soon. Phillips should provide the decent-to-good right-handed bat we've been sorely needing. (40g, .315, 5hr, 22rbi, 2sb) in Louisville
In other news, AGon is now on the 60 day DL so I imagine he'll be out until August or so at least... not that we *need* him back soon anyway with Janish and Kepp soon to be around.

It will be 60 days next week.
Gonzalez should be able to come back in June by the rules, though I haven’t heard that he’s even starting running or doing any drills yet.

I work at the stadium
Gonzo has been there in the off weeks taking ground balls and such. I have yet to see him do any hitting. Him and one of the trainers are usually out on the field a couple hours a day. then i assume they go downstairs and hit/weight room

yeah i thought
javy would be gone… why DFA patterson when javy takes 3 ABs a week? Do we really want to have 3 catchers? And javy wont be hitting from the right side now that phillips is up…or be playing first. I know how much the Cincinnati fans hate patterson (i think because they think he was holding up bruce, which may or may not be true) but wouldn’t javy be a better decision considering the fact that javy can only play one postion and patterson can play 3?

Please don't misunderstand
I am much happier to see Patterson gone than I would be if they’d cut Valentin. Javy made sense to keep around as a backup first baseman, occasional backup catcher, and a PH. Of course, that made sense for about a day, because now Andy Phillips is up with the team (question: does Brandon Phillips now have to sew a “B.” on his jersey?). He can be the backup first baseman, and he truly is a right-handed hitter, unlike Javy who could stand in either batter’s box.
So yes, Javy’s time is probably limited, as it should be. I’m just kind of impressed that he’s held a career together for as long as he has.

My money's on Bako
He gets the majority of the starts anyway, plus Ross might still be tuckered out from catching all of Sunday’s game.
On the other hand, Dusty does have a way of benching players after a good performance. I still think Bako is the pick.

Affeldt's been pretty good
but in his last 15 appearances he has an ERA of 7.59 in 10.2 IP. He’s given up 17 hits, including 3 HRs. On the plus side, he’s still had a good K/BB ratio of 11/3.
Nothing to get worked up about yet, but if he begins to revert back to his ‘03-’06 form (1.6ish WHIP), then he shouldn’t be resigned.
Also, to address your argument below regarding Hopper v. Patterson…
just please please please no norris hopper, at least patterson can hit the ball out of the OF
Based on his numbers last year (.329/.371/.388), Hopper is several orders more valuable offensively than Corey Patterson. Loud outs might make the pink hat crowd swoon, but they’re still outs. More to the point, Hopper - he of the infamous infield single - still had a better slugging % last season than Patterson does this season.*

Effects on the lineup?
Okay, tonight we face a lefty. We now have Andy Phillips who mostly plays 1st and 3rd. However, Votto hits lefties well. Does Freel start at 3rd, since he is hitting well against lefties? Or, does Phillips start at 1st or 3rd? Or…..does EE get the start, even though he is really struggling? It will be interesting to see how all this plays out tonight. :)

Does being on the 60-Day DL
Allow for a longer minor league rehab assignment than the 15-day DL? It would be nice to see everyone back with these 13 position:
OF – Bruce, Dunn, Freel, Griffey
INF – Hairston, BP, Kepp, A-Gon, Edwin, Votto
C – Ross and either Javy or Bako.
Those are our best 13 once everyone is healthy. And yes, I rather have Hairston over Norris Hopper. He can play 7 positions to Norris’ 3, and can hit the ball out of the infield.

Corey gone ? Dusty must be dissapointed.
Really thought that Corey would be here until August froze over. WOW.
Me thinks Big Bob is not going to stand and watch the status quo (losing and then losing) with the same guys any more. This must send a ‘message’ to the team that Bob may just be pretty Goddamned serious about winning after all.
Go Reds.
I never thought CoPat was a leadoff starter and for his sake I hope something good comes out of this for him. we may need him when Jr. goes down with his next injury (God forbid).
So lets see.
1. Voltran – Great
2. J. Quest – growing – doing the job
3. Votto – shaky D – but the boy is gonna be fine
4. Jannish- a very pleasant surprise
5. Mr. Bruce – 1 night doesn’t make a career but he’s the real deal
6. Now Mr. Phillips – this opportunity will self-destruct only if you let it -Good luck, hope to see you in the line up tonight.
Love these young guys – This is exciting.

Bruce's hot start
If he gets on base his first time up tonight, Bruce’s start will be second-best all-time….
Listed are the top marks for consecutive times reaching base safely to begin a career, since 1956 (courtesy SABR & Elias Sports Bureau):
7 – Ted Cox, Red Sox, 1977 (6-for-6, 1BB)
5 – John Paciorek, Astros, 1963 (3-for-3, 2BB)
5 – Dave Robinson, Padres, 1970 (2-for-2, 3BB)
5 – Bob Dernier, Phillies, 1980 (4-for-4, 1BB)
5 – Tom Dunbar, Rangers, 1983 (2-for-2, 3BB)
5 – Jose Hernandez, Rangers, 1991 (4-for-4, 1BB)
5 – Mike Piazza, Dodgers, 1992 (4-for-4, 1BB)
5 – Ramon Martinez, Giants, 1998 (3-for-3, 2BB)
5 – Kazuo Matsui, Mets, 2004 (3-for-3, 2BB)
2008
5 (active) – Jay Bruce, Reds, 5/27 vs Pit (3-for-3, 2BB)
5 – Kosuke Fukudome, Cubs, 3/31-4/2 vs Mil (3-for-3, 2BB)
5 – Brandon Boggs, Rangers, 4/29/4/30 vs KC (4-for-4, 1BB)
Interesting that 3 of the 12 times on this list occurred this season.

And there was much rejoicing...
If anyone deserves this opportunity, it’s George Andrew Phillips. He’s hit well in Louisville, he’s hit well throughout his minor league career, and the Reds could use a player like him right now. The Yankees never gave him much of a chance. And I bet they regret non-tendering him now, with the way Shelley Duncan and Morgan Ensberg have imploded.
Yay, Andy! Roll Tide!

More from Fay's blog
Dusty Baker said Corey Patterson came to him yesterday and volunteered to go Triple-A.“It was a mutual decision,” Baker said. “I was going to call Corey in and talk to him. He came in before I called him in. He said, ‘I got to get my act together. I’ve got to change some things.’ He knows he’s better than he played. He’s still got the skill, the talent. He’s still only 28 years old. It’s a good move to go down, stay a while and get his stuff together.”
It sounds like there’s mechanical problems with Patterson’s swing. “No. 1, he’s got to get on that fastball and eliminate some steps. Basically, hitting is like a two-step process. He had a third and fourth step in there.”
"Got a bump on the ole noggin, but otherwise god. And I get a new vehicle probably, w00t!"

Yep
Normal hitters:
Step 1: Don’t suck.
Step 2: Swing
Patterson:
Step 1: Don’t suck.
Step 2: Suck.
Step 3: Really, really suck
Step 4: Swing
He needs to get rid of those extra steps.
BTW, Baker is full of shit.

Not exactly news, but
Hal makes it clear that Patterson was not Wayne’s idea:
Permit me to return to last spring when the Reds signed Corey Patterson to a $3.5 million contract. Once again, as I’ve written before, don’t blame fired general manager Wayne Krivsky for that one.As he told me, "I was told to sign Patterson and get the deal done, no matter what it takes." It took $3.5 million — $3.5 million wasted dollars.
by ken on May 30, 2008 8:17 AM EDT 0 recs
So what exactly was Kenny Lofton asking for?
They couldn’t get him for less than that? Although, since Kenny has yet to sign with ANY team (probably because he turned his back on smooth music), it’s entirely possible that he was asking for more.

i recall Lofton wanted a guaranteed major league deal
Patterson signed for a minor league deal, and my guess is he signed it with a wink and a nudge from Dusty. its just speculation on my part, but the jerks probably had a verbal agreement in place to go around Wayner’s back.
