Scott Hatteberg Designated For Assignment, Corey Patterson still a Red
No Link yet, but it is being reported by 700 WLW that the Reds have Designated for Assignment 1B Scott Hatteberg to make room for Jay Bruce. I will update with a link as possible.
[Update by MixFMKyle, 05/27/08 2:14 PM EDT ]
C. Trent has info on his blog:
It's Hatteberg that's designated for assignment to make room for Bruce. Interesting. It makes sense, really, you don't need two left-handed hitting first basemen on the roster.
I'll be interested to see if anyone takes his locker. It's in the corner, opposite Griffey's. It's usually reserved for a veteran. Since moving in there, Barry Larkin, Joe Randa, Jeff Conine and Hatteberg have occupied that spot. Except for Randa, those three were leaders for this team.
I am bummed Corey Patterson still is a Red. Of the three candidates Hatteberg, Valentin, and Patterson, Hatteberg could have netted us the most on the trade market. I suppose Scott could still be traded in the next ten days. You got to feel for Scott. He signed a team friendly deal, and has quite possibly been the most professional and team player on the roster. Best of luck to him, I hope Walt can swing him a deal to a contender.

This was, in my estimation, the dumbest possible move
Although I will concede that Valentin makes more sense on the roster than Hatteberg, strictly due to his versatility. Hatteberg didn’t have a place and should have been dealt at the deadline last year. Instead, we kept both him and Conine and are getting nothing for them.
But a tip of the hat to Scott, who was always a classy player, and for long stretches, the best player on the team. Happy trails, buddy. I hope an AL contender can use you.

We got 2 Minor Leaguers for Conine
One is Jose Castro, a Juan Castro hitting type short stop, and the other was an outfielder, who I can’t remember…..

Wait, Conine was a leader on the team?
When did that happen? And for that matter, Hatteberg was a leader on the team?

3 catchers continues!
Valentine can’t bat RH either, so the Reds still have 2 LH hitting 1st basemen on the roster.

Well Put
I think it signals that they will trade one of Freel, Dunn, or Griffey, and in the next month. I think Norris Hopper, once he comes back from the DL, better find a place in Louisville.
I think the Reds have a big decision, with Dunn and Griff – pick one and sign for next year and trade the other.

Jocketty
Has to be burning up the phone lines trying to move Griffey, then. He can’t keep him beyond this year. And if it comes to a choice between Dunn and Griffey, then it’s no choice at all. I think it’s better to let both go then to keep Griffey and get rid of Dunn.
Looking to trade Freel would be a smart move. Baserunning aside, he’s playing some of the best baseball that he has in awhile. His trade value should be pretty high.
Oh! I just had a terrible thought! What if Dusty starts Patterson (or maybe Hairston), and sits Bruce on the bench? That’s giving me the shakes just thinking about it. We’d have to kill him, right?

If I was Seattle
Getting Griffey would just make me madder. Over on espn.com, they’re having a chat right now about the most disappointing team this season. The Mariners are in the discussion, and one of their fans was talking about how they just needed to blow up the team and go total youth movement. That would have been a good idea before the Bedard trade. Other than the memories, there’s not much difference right now between Griffey and Richie Sexson.
by Brendanukkah on May 27, 2008 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unfortunately, I think Seattle would be out of the picture
I think Seattle has played themselves into seller’s mode this year. They probably wouldn’t want to give up much to get Griffey when they’d figure they can get him as a free agent in the offseason.

Thought Patterson Would Stay
I expected Patterson to stay, but was hoping they’d move a pitcher. They certainly have a selection to choose from.
Griffey is 38 and his production is falling off. Makes no sense to sign him for a multiyear deal, and i suspect he would balk at a one-year contract. If his numbers don’t improve in the next month or so, pick up the phone to Seattle. He was a great player, but few guys still are at 38. Fame wins no ball games.

Given the money and positions...
You knew Patterson wasn’t going to be cut. The Reds were essentially down to 4 outfielders before this move: Dunn, Griffey, Patterson, Freel. Hairston can play it, but with Kepp on the DL, he’s nearly fulltime in the infield. When Freel plays the 3B (like when Encarnacion was sick over the weekend) there’s no bench players for the OF.
Cutting Hatteberg or Valentine leaves Patterson and Freel. Votto’s fulltime at 1st, so I guess the guy who can also still catch made the cut…barely.
Too bad Krivsky couldn’t (wouldn’t?) swing a deal with the Red Sox this spring.

Happy trails, Hatte
He might not have hit particularly well on the road or against LHP, but for two years Hatteberg was a lot better than most of us expected and provided reasonable production and good value at 1B. It shows that the team really didn’t trust Votto (I remember grumblings coming from the front office last Fall before Joey’s call-up). Otherwise, it made no sense to hold on to Hatteberg and especially to pick up his option for this year.
by ken on May 27, 2008 2:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Why couldn't they get rid of someone who I wanted to see go?
This team still has 4 centerfielders and 3 catchers. I would even make the argument that Hatte had a bigger role on the team than Valentin and Patterson at this point, at least. Ugh, Walt.

Two left handed hitting first baseman on the roster was just dumb. At least they fixed one problem, I suppose I was being greedy to think the Reds might actually cut Patterson.

Huh.
You could justify keeping Patterson as a defensive replacement, I guess (though you know he won’t be replacing the worst defensive OF when he comes in). But Valentin? Hatte’s a much better 1B, is at least as good of a hitter (I’m guessing with more ABs he be hitting more consistantly – his OPS was 100 points higher when he was semi-starting), and may not be any worse as a 3rd catcher than Valentin.
I just don’t get it. Why does this team love the Latin Love Machine so?
Often wrong, never uncertain.
by sidnancy on May 27, 2008 2:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I can see it
I can see keeping Valentin solely for the reason that it’s nice to have one guy that you know can pinch hit pretty solidly. If he can play a decent 1B, then that’s fine. Votto needs to play damn near every day anyway. And Valentin doesn’t give a shit, he’s happy he’s getting paid.
As far as Hatteberg goes, hopefully he clears waivers or whatever it’s called and can have some choice about where he goes… would be nice to see him win.

This year (small sample, I know) his OPS is .397. That’s not good. And he can’t “play a decent 1B”; I’m probably better (and I never played past Little League/low-level slow pitch softball).

With CoPat's contract and the AntiClog at the HELM, it will be a freezing day in Augsut before Corey is kicked off this team.
He’s a guy who has no role. Guys like Eddie Milner,Dave Collins and Herm Winningham all were valuable contributers to their teams because their manager knew how to utilize their best abilities and also keep them plugged into the the team. they clearly understood their roles and performed them well.

patterson
it seems alot of people on this blog are rooting for him to fail. Just because Dusty wanted him in there. Now i agree he shouldnt hit 1st but i still think he can be an excellent defensive replacement or maybe give griffey or dunn a break. Patterson isnt the reason we are in last place and its getting old that people keep saying he is. It makes no sense to dump patterson when we have 2 left handing hitting first basemen. (although i thought i would have been nice to see hatte at 1st and votto in left after dunn leaves) Id rather have patterson anyday than norris hopper.
Btw patterson used to be a couldn’t miss prospect, so there is alot of potential

I'm tired
of people saying that any given problem “isn’t the reason we’re in last place.” There are lots of problems; just because there’s more than one doesn’t mean that each doesn’t contribute to the team’s problems.
There is poor roster construction (as mentioned elsewhere, too many LH 1Bs, too many catchers, Patterson), poor lineup construction (Patterson first, Griffey first, Dunn in the bottom half), some players performing below expectations (Griffey), and some stupid managerial moves (see above lineup construction, plus misuse of the bullpen, stupid defensive replacements).
Patterson is not the reason for this team’s troubles, but he’s definitely a reason—and a major one, at that.

I defended the Patterson signing. I defended him as a starter. I defended him as a placeholder for Bruce.
He was the one who hit like a blind epileptic; I didn’t make him do it. When he was signed, and there was hope, the only complaint around here was that he hit too high in the lineup. It’s entirely his own fault that he’s been turned against.

Can't Miss:
So was Nick Esasky, Brandon Larson and Matt Clement – Esasky had a short and unheralded career, Larson couldn’y make the jump to the show and Clement is back down in the minors.
Patterson used correctly as a LATE inning defensive replacement, a pinch runner and occasional pinch hitter could be useful – not over $3millon useful but, still nobody wants him to fail, He just isn’t good enough to play everyday and contribute.

But then I thought:
Patterson usually replaces Dunn defensively.
Patterson has been thrown out 1/3 of the time running this year (4 out of 12)
Patterson can’t hit.

I think one of the problems is that there are too many rosters problems to fix with this one move.
We’ve fixed the two LH first baseman problem and I’m sure Walt will get to working on the 1)too many CFs 2)too many LH CF 3)no right-hand bench power 4) no true leadoff hitter 4)three catchers 5)crappy fifth starter yada, yada, yada….
There is LOT of work to do on this roster and Walt has proven himself to be adapt at such tasks. But it’s going to take him a little while.

He might if he were playing everyday, but that ain’t going to happen. So his value lies as a PH and he’s just not very good in that role.
by bengalred on May 27, 2008 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
I like Hatteberg as much as anyone, and he was great for us. But there’s just not any room for him on the roster as presently constructed. He was being used by management in ways that didn’t play to his strengths. He needs to play regularly to be effective, but if you make me choose between starting Votto or Hatteberg regularly, Hatte’s losing that contest every time.
There is a lot wrong with the team. This addresses a problem. Maybe not the biggest problem or most glaring weakness, but it does address a problem. Hopefully it’s the first step towards fixing the team for good. Really would have liked to have gotten SOMETHING for Hatte though…
by Brendanukkah on May 27, 2008 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
totally agreed on the getting something for Hatte
probably should have dealt him at the deadline last year. Oh well.
by bengalred on May 27, 2008 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
We said it then, we said it in the offseason
The front office just wasn’t sold on Votto as a starter. There was still a lot of debate on the matter all the way through spring training. Andy Phillips probably could have handled the job, but I guess they didn’t have confidence in him either. And, someone check me out on this, I think he was signed after they extended Hatteberg’s contract anyway.
by Brendanukkah on May 27, 2008 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that contract extension was a total fucking mystery even to hatteberg

No problems were fixed
Unless you consider “2 LH PH” a problem that needs fixed.
There are still 2 LH 1B – as crappy as LLM is as a hitter, he’s much better as a LH than as a RH – his career .596 OPS vs LHP is putrid. Dumping LLM makes 1000X more sense than dropping Hatte.
Often wrong, never uncertain.

As long as Bruce starts in CF over C-Pat, one problem is definately fixed
Even if the bench isn’t any better
by bengalred on May 27, 2008 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the only thing that makes sense
maybe since everyone knew we had to trade hatteberg, walt wasn’t getting top-dollar offers for him. Now that he’s DFAed with a 10-day trading deadline maybe it creates some kind of bidding war. or something. whatev.

Baker’s lineup card is as follows:
CF Patterson
SS Hairston
RF Griffey
2B Phillips
LF Dunn
3B Encarnacion
1B Votto
C Bako
P Cueto

Can't fix all problems at once
I think Hatteberg had to go and Bruce had to come up. This isn’t the last move Jock will make to improve the roster, but it is a start. Next: Patterson goes. He decides between Hopper and Freel.

Bad move Walt
We couldn’t package hatterberg, freel and valentin to someone else?
As for why else it’s a bad move, Dusty loves CoPa and will continue to play him and bat him leadoff. Dusty may trick everyone and start Bruce a few times in Center but you just wait soon as Bruce struggles with an 0 for 4 night it’s CoPa time. CoPa is a veteran who has earned his 0-8. Yes it’s not CoPa fault he’s batting leadoff but don’t enable Dusty, just don’t.

I have faith that Baker will do the right thing.
We’ll see how it goes with Bruce vs. Baker favorite Patterson.
In other positions so far this year, the battle of veteran vs. youth: He stuck with Encarnacion thru his early season errors, and it now appears two hitting slumps. He gave Votto every opportunity at come thru his spring/early April slump at first base.

Just kidding but are you telling me you’re going to be surprised when he removes Dunn from games to play CoPa?

I'll certainly miss Hatte
classy guy.
but when is LLM going to be culled in favor of Andy Phillips? dude is OPSing .887 in AAA and actually hits righthanded. i suppose i may not be an expert on making sense, but this seems to make sense to me. anyone else?

I'd like to see Andy get a shot
And he’s hitting .400 against lefthanders.
However, his splits have always been reversed in the big leagues, even though he mashes lefties in the minors. Might just be small sample size.
And he’s not a catcher, which might be a strike against him. He played only 1B for the Yanks, but the Bats have been using him at 2B and 3B, too. They seem to have given up on using him in the outfield.
Still, LLM is used so rarely, I think it’s probably worth cutting him in favor of Andy Phillips, or some other right-handed bat languishing in the minors.

Maybe there's a trade market afterall.
From the Seattle Times:
“Richie Sexson was on the bench for a second straight night Wednesday amid rumors the club is actively pursuing longtime Yakima resident Scott Hatteberg, released by the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. Sexson has posted just a .197 on-base percentage so far in May.
Miguel Cairo got the start at first base instead, having gone 1 for 3 with a sacrifice bunt in Sexson’s place on Tuesday night. “
From MLB.com
“NEW YORK—Should the Mets determine their primary left-handed pinch-hitter Marlon Anderson will require an extended assignment to the disabled list, they may move to add veteran Scott Hatteberg, who was designated for assignment by the Reds on Tuesday.
The club already has discussed the possibility, and if Hatteberg clears waivers, it could act quickly.”
If the Reds can play the Mariners against the Mets, maybe they can pick up a low-level prospect.

Yikes
I love Miggy, but he’s best in small doses. And he’s hitting below the Mendoza line. Hatteberg would definitely be an upgrade.
Though Seattle is so awful this year, they might be better off just blowing up the team.

Seattle
That would be the rational thing, but their management is blinded by last year’s flukishly good record. Rather than recognize that they have fallen back to earth, there’s been talk about a lack of leadership and clubhouse issues. Just maybe they could be convinced that Griffey (or Hatteberg, to a lesser extent) will help them right the ship. The box office bonanza and fan goodwill that would accompany Griffey’s arrival would of course sweeten the deal.
