Jay the Bruce is coming!
[Note by Rick House, 05/26/08 5:10 PM EDT ] Here's what we've been waiting for. I hope I never see Bruce in Louisville again. What a memorable Memorial Day!
From Rob Butcher:
Tomorrow the Reds are expected to promote from Class AAA Louisville top prospect OF Jay Bruce. A corresponding roster move will be announced prior to tomorrow’s 7:10 p.m. game against the Pirates.
Bruce and Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty will be available to the media tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in the Reds’ dugout at Great American Ball Park.
Bruce will wear uniform number 32 and when he plays will be making his Major League debut.
Bruce, 21, has been rated the best prospect in the minor leagues. He has spent the season at Louisville, where in 49 games he hit .364 with 9 doubles, 5 triples, 10 HR, 37 RBI and 8 stolen bases. He leads the International League in hitting and hits (67) and ranks among the IL leaders in slugging percentage (.630, 3rd), runs scored (34, 4th), extra-base hits (24, T4th) and RBI (T5th).

good idea.
I had to drop Edwin, but now I’ve Longoria, Bruce, and Votto. Too bad I won’t be able to keep all of them forever!

I guess this means...
...he’ll be out of the Bats lineup tonight?
If the game is even played…
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Yup
Bruce is out of the lineup tonight. Batting third, in Bruce’s spot, is Andy Phillips, who usually bats cleanup. Leading off and playing Bruce’s usual CF position is Dickerson.
Andy Phillips is 2 for 4 with a home run. Andy Green also has a homer tonight (after hitting two yesterday).
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Bats win, 2-1
The only Clipper to cross the plate was…Ray Olmedo.

Just got in from the Clippers-Bats game
It was actually a great game. It doesn’t get much better than 2-1 games. Barker hit the ball harder than any one tonight with nothing to show for it.
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
I love how the Reds lied about avoiding Super Two
It was so obvious. I crunched the numbers last week and figured his first date to be safely called up and delay arbitration was May 24. But you knew they wouldn’t fly him out to San Diego for two days. I told everyone I knew that it was going to happen by this Tuesday’s game.
I've seen this thrown around
How did you calculate the Super 2 date? From my understanding it’s always in mid-June but varies slightly from year to year, depending on how quickly the player has been called up relative to his class.
I'm quoting from Geoff Baker's Mariners blog
He does the best job of explaining it. Google ‘Super Two player’ and his site is the 2nd result.
“Those with the top 17 percent of accrued time in their third year get “Super Two’’ status. It’s all an estimate as to who those top 17 percent of players will be.”
“Since 1990, the average minimum amount of service time for a “Super Two’’ eligible player has been two years, 135 days. If the team wants to avoid going to arbitration with Jeff Clement at the end of the 2010 season - and keep paying him “peanuts’’ in 2011, instead of a seven-figure wage - it has to make sure he does not have two years, 135 days of service time by the end of 2010. At a minimum. Just to be safe, the team might want to wait another seven to 10 days to be sure.”
I also read somewhere else that the number has never been less than two years, 128 days. Also, the postseason doesn’t count toward service time. So you just take the last day of the regular season and count back 128-135 days you’ll come up with an estimate. Using this, either last Friday or Saturday was the 128- day mark and the date teams could call up a guy and safely avoid him becoming a Super Two. And the fact that the Dodgers called up stud pitcher Clayton Kershaw Sunday gives pretty strong evidence this is what happened. This also makes sense because the Brewers called up Ryan Braun on May 24 last season and delayed his arbitration a year.
So that mid-June thing is a bit of a myth. It’s most frequently in the last week of May. I think the mid-June thing comes up because the MLB site mentions two years, 86 days. And that is true, but the top 17 percent rule gives teams more wiggle room to go earlier than that point.
Either way, when Jocketty and his assistant GM say crap like “We don’t know when the Super Two date is,” and “Delaying his arbitration a year isn’t a consideration,” they are flat out lying. They know And waiting until now to call up Bruce was ALL about money. If money was no concern, he would have been here on Opening Day.

Thanks
When I think of teams screwing up the Super Two calculation I always think of the Jays, who cost themselves a couple million by calling up Alex Rios one day too early. For some reason I thought that Rios had been called up in June, but his debut was actually on May 27. With Bruce, hopefully arbitration will be mooted by a long-term deal signed at some point in the next couple of years.
For the record I think it was more than defensible to keep him in Louisville at the start of the year because of his age, plate discipline and defense/lack of a position. Saving a few million in the process made it look even sounder, and Patterson’s hot start made it feel like we could buy some time. The CF situation obviously hasn’t worked out, but I think Castellini can say with a straight face that the decision to keep Bruce down wasn’t all about the money.
Wait, wha?
Why call him up now? We’ve got a surplus of centerfielders on this team, don’t we? Where’s Corey Patterson going to play?
This is totally unexpected . . .
They'll move Patterson to shortstop so that he can still hit 2nd
People Don't Kill People. Burning Couches Kill People.

It’s got to be him. And Bruce can do no worse than Patterson. I think he hits low in the order for now, so Hairston/Freel appear to be our leadoff guys. I’m okay with that, until Kepp returns.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Corey DFA'd
But at the same time I wouldn’t be surprised to see them dump a pitcher, or even Jannish back to AAA. If Bruce flails and fails, then Dustbag will throw a shit fit if CoPat ain’t available.
We’ll see….anyway It is way overdue to have J. up. good news and as I said in the Bruce Almighty post this is one guy who can really make an immediate impact for the better…if all goes only moderately well.

Shortstop is a tough position to play, and you need at least one backup. Until Kepp or A-Gon return, they aren’t going to send down Soft-J.

mercker made a perfect one-inning "start" for the Bats tonight
I think we might see two moves tomorrow: Something like Bruce and Mercker for Bray and Patterson. Or maybe Bray stays up and LLM and Patterson are both DFAed.

They also said Patterson was coming north to join the Bats

Patterson has options. I guess he could be designated for assignment and then accept his demotion to Louisville. I doubt anyone would claim that turd on waivers.

I think he does have options
He hasn’t spent much time in the minors at all. Only four minor league seasons, including two before he was first called up.
But he has enough major league experience that he can’t be sent down without his consent. I think.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Anyone with 5+ years of MLB service time
can’t be sent down w/o their consent, regardless of whether their options are exhausted. Patterson would have to consent.

Jay the Bruce seeks his thrown
Now in Cincinnati, gathered the council of Reds nobles. Among these was Jay, the 17th Earl of Bruce, the leading contender for the crown of Redsland.
Jay: Wait! I respect what you said, but remember the manager makes the lineup and roster. It’s much to risk.
Adam: And the player who bleeds on the ballfield, does he risk less?
Jay: No, but from top to bottom this team has no sense of itself. Its scrappy players share allegiance with Baker. Its cliques war with each other. If you make enemies on both sides, you’ll end up traded.
Adam: We all end up traded; it’s just a question of how and why.
Jay: I’m not a coward. I want what you want, but we need the manager.
Adam: We need him?
Jay: Aye.
Adam: Manager. Now tell me, what does that mean to be a manager? Your title gives you claim to the throne of our team, but men don’t follow titles, they follow courage. Now our people know you. Manager and players, they respect you. And if you would just lead them to victory, they’d follow you. And so would I.

Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
leadoff is probably not the best thing for him
and i dont think Dusty will do that. regardless of whether Bruce can cut it or not, i dont see him trusting the leadoff spot to a rookie. VP is necessary. i think we’ll see Hairston lead off, and i wouldnt be surprised if BP leads off sometimes. neither is the best option, but this is Dusty and he’s a shithead.
If you don't get a good-night kiss, you get Kafka dreams.
by Charlie Scrabbles on May 26, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't think there is a best option
Did you know that only 3 players with 100 PAs have an OBP over .350 and one of them has a broken knee cap? Dunn ain’t gonna lead off, nor should he. So that pretty much leaves Freel and he makes his outs on the base paths.
I doubt BP leads off because I think Dusty thinks he’s crucial to breaking up the lefties. It’s probably going to be Hairston, I would guess. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see Janish lead-off when he plays, because like you said, it’s Dusty..yadda yadda yadda.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
And I wouldn't bat Bruce lead-off
I’m sure there’s a psychological pressure to leading off that he just doesn’t need. Let him get comfortable in the Majors before you start asking him to take on roles he’s not familiar with.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
I don't understand this
what’s the pressure? How is it more than for any other position in the lineup aside from 8th or 9th? It seems to me that hitting first come without the pressure of having to drive in runs. He may not be a “natural” lead off hitter, but it may help him to relax knowing that all he has to do it go up to the plate and be dangerous without worrying about situational hitting and stranding runners on base.
I think the pressure is one of role
A lead off hitter is supposed to be getting on base, taking pitches, etc. Granted that’s a good idea for every spot, but I think the 7th spot is a good place for him to start, at least a couple of games. Give him a chance to get his feet wet before putting any sort of expectation on him.
And my honest, non-political BS reason for not wanting him to bat first is because I think he’s going to be a .330-.350 OBP hitter. His value will be in his power, don’t lead him off and waste that.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
yeah i dont think BP would be Dusty's #1 choice
mostly for the reason you listed above. but EdE can break up lefties all the same, and i can see Dusty valuing BP’s speed the most. Freel really is the “best” option, but that would mean BP plays SS and Freel is at 2B and that would be silly.
If you don't get a good-night kiss, you get Kafka dreams.

I think Bruce has to play in center everyday. He won’t sit Dunn and there’s no way he sits Griffey. I’d assume whoever’s playing shortstop leads off, whether it’s Hairston or Janish, unless Dusty gets creative with it.

So who here thinks Bruce will have a Ryan Braun like Rookie Season?
If I remember correctly it took the Brew Crew awhile to call Braun up last year as well…
Norris Hopper's #1 fan!!!
Braun first played on May 25th
Honestly, I’d be happy with an OPS over .850 this year from Bruce. Only 5 players in history have played 100 games in their first season and posted an OPS+ of 150 or better (Johnny Mize, Ted Williams, Albert Pujols, Mitchell Page, Ryan Braun), and only Williams and Pujols were as young as Bruce. I don’t expect him to have a Hall of Fame first season, but I’m hopeful that he can come up and be one of the top 2 or 3 hitters on the team.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
I’d be happy with Frank Thomas like numers to start his career. Although I certainly hope he plays more than Frank did in his first season with the White Sox.
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
That's extremely high expectations
The first time Frank Thomas had an OPS+ under 174 was his 9th season. I will now list all of the players who have done that besides Thomas:
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
even still
Setting the bar at Frank Thomas is unrealistic. Thomas had 138 walks and just 112 strikeouts in his first full season. His OBP was .453 and he slugged .553 that season. I think you are setting the bar a bit too high for Bruce. I think we’ll be lucky if he matches Dunn’s first season in terms of OPS.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
From Frank Thomas? Yes.
Four players last year posted an OPS+ of 170 or greater (ARod, Carlos Pena, David Ortiz, Bonds). By saying that you’d be happy with a season like Frank Thomas’s first two years, you are saying you’d be happy with Jay Bruce coming up at the age of 21 and being one of the top 5 hitters in baseball. If that were to happen, I wouldn’t be just happy, I’d be flumbatestatic (new word).
FWIW, I don’t think setting the bar at achieving Adam Dunn’s level of production is exactly setting the bar low. In the last 20 years, just 6 players have posted an OPS+ over 135 in their first season while under the age of 23 (min. 50 games). That’s still a pretty high bar.
"Hard being everybody’s hero, I suppose." - Buck O'Neil on Willie Mays
setting it low
I guess my point was I don’t think he will be an instant success. My sarcasim didn’t translate well.
I’d be estatic if he ever had a Frank Thomas type season (the early years) and I will be shocked if it ever happens.
I’m really not sure what to expect from this guy other than some strikeouts. I also do not see him playing in more that 75-80 games the rest of the season. I guess I’m hoping he becomes a solid 30 or so HR guy that hits in the .280’s with 90+ RBI. Maybe like Al Oliver or a Jeff Kent or Luis Gonzalez type of career
I really do not want to get to excited about this guy just in case he tanks.

0 fer 8 ? say it ain't so "Rusty"
Rusty is going to die with his “Homeboy” “K”orey just like he did in Chicago…. have you
heard all the excuses yet ?
Its not easy hitting Major League pitching – their pitcher was really sharp tonite – he hit
it hard but right at somebody – he has had bad luck.
“K”orey is a loser …... chases high fastballs like a dog chasin cars…. we are real happy
you got these two bums…............. in last place.
I think a village is missing its Cubs fan.

did Corey
ever reach the level of ofer 8 futility with the Cubbies, or is that something new he has added to his act after he came here?

You think so?
I kind of liked it, even though I saw the twists coming like an hour ahead of time. I had only seen it the one time in the theater, then caught the tail end of it on TV this weekend. Once you’ve seen it before, the “tells” are glaringly obvious, but I still dug it. Scarlett Johansson was pretty awful in it though.

Like you said
it was just too predictable. Sort of like a Dusty line up

a dusty lineup is unpredictably predictable
you never know who he is going to rest, or who will start in his place but you know where in the lineup he will start in the lineup based on position.

Hatteberg doesn't really make sense
It has to be either Cpat or Valentine.

actually, im starting to think valentin doesnt make sense
maybe in another move, but given our glut of center fielders, it has to be corey. has to be.
What do you mean, "blank slate"?

yeah, after he said hatteberg yesterday
then he realized he was talking out of his ass and changed his mind

i have no idea why hatteberg hasn't been traded over the course of the last year
he can hit, and he is cheap. someone can use him.
he’s not a complete waste like javy and “k”orey

But Dusty <3 Patterson
and they no longer have Narrons/Krivsky three catcher fetish. I think Dusty will loby hard for Patterson to stay, because he is just a hit away from coming out of his 6 year slump.

The three catcher fetish may still be in effect, despite a new manager and GM
Ever since Ross came off the DL, they’ve carried 3 catchers and never made any kind of mention that they weren’t planning to continue to do so. Ignoring that double negative for now, they have kind of shifted Javy a little more permanently into the DH/1B role, rather than as a third catcher. Which is fine, and makes sense, but it also means that Hatteberg is superfluous, and while he’s a great hitter, he doesn’t do well as a pinch hitter. We need to move him for something, and we needed to do it ten months ago.
by Brendanukkah on May 27, 2008 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions
i think in the next few weeks
we can expect hatteberg to be moved and phillips to be called up in his stead
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
that would be acceptable

by chandrathan on May 27, 2008 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Valentin makes Hatteberg extraneous
But of the two, I think it would be easier to justify DFA’ing Javy. I still think you can get something – anything – for Hatteberg. But there’s still a logjam of centerfielders, and Patterson has just been too abysmal to keep. It’s gotta be him, regardless of salary and Dusty-favorite status. I wouldn’t be surprised at both Patterson and Valentin being cut, and Homer (or another pitcher) brought up to make a start.

you aren’t saying mercker will be making a start, right?

that is correct
i dont think dusty’s worried about the rotation, for whatever reason. but he’s probably concerned about the bullpen
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
then again,
i could also see them just sending bray back down. that’s always fun
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
and would annoy me

by chandrathan on May 27, 2008 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm okay with another reliever too
At this point, just some kind of fresh arm will be welcome. My bigger concern is the rotation, obviously, because most of the relievers used in that monstrosity of a game went an inning or less. With the day off Monday, the bullpen should be fine. The only pitcher I would try not to use is Coco. He needs a break to get his smooth back.
So yeah, the bullpen is fine. It’s the rotation that’s fucked. But if they don’t want to bring up a starter, then bring up Mercker, because the bullpen will not be fine if they have to keep coming in in the third and fourth innings of the next few games.
by Brendanukkah on May 27, 2008 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Surely he can’t be allowed to start another game and if not, who gets the start Saturday? Likely to see severa moves today.
I think it all depends on if they think Homer's ready.
Because if he’s not, who else do you go with? Talking heads want Daryl Thompson up from AA, but I think that’s unrealistic. Who else is there? Shearn? Maloney? Fogg? Belisle is the lesser of five evils at this point.

Homer can't be any worse than Belisle.
Maybe early on, but if he’s going to get it straightened out and you have no better options, why not let him do it in the bigs?
Oh, I agree with you.
It just seems like the brass in the front office is pretty apprehensive to do anything with Homer at this point. If he were pitching better lately, it would be a no-brainer. Check out his last three starts: 14.1 IP, 21 H, 15 ER, 13 BB, 11 K. Which translates into a 9.42 ERA, 2.37 WHIP, and .85 K/BB ratio. None of those are good, and you can bet that those numbers have Walt pretty confused as to what to do with him.

Going home (our thief returned last night)
Heading out, but wanted to leave some predictions for Bruces debut:
Bruce, batting 7th will go 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, 1 rbi and 1 run.
Yeah, the guy who broke in was home when I got there last night. Luckily I was with about 15 other people. He slipped out the back of the house as some of us were coming in and then tried to leave through our neighbor’s door to their yard. He walked through a group of us before we realized what was happening. Some of us chased him but he escaped to the caves below the sidewalk along the ocean near our house.
Dear Mr. Burgurlar guy,Oh yeah, and this:If you happen to be a Reds fan that also speaks English here is my message for you:
THERE IS NOTHING LEFT IN OUR HOUSE TO TAKE. PLEASE STOP DOING THIS. SOMEONE IS GOING TO HURT YOU OR YOU ARE GOING TO HURT SOMEONE.
I DONT WANT TO BE TRADED. I AM HAPPY HERE? LETS REVIEW 8 YEARS AVERAGED 105 GAMES-68 RBIS IN THAT TIME…
Go Bruce. Go Reds. And Go Patterson. Far, far away.
Tanzen!

Does it seem sad to anyone that there are so many players we're ready to DFA?
Patterson
Valentine
Hatteburg
Merker
Fogg
Lincoln
And that’s after we’ve DFA’d Stanton, Castro, and sent Coffey down, and are ready to send Belisle packing.
I’m wondering if the Reds castoffs could compete in AA!
