Let me just say that I’ve been your biggest fan for ever and ever and it’s such an honor to talk to you. You’re the man and I really appreciate everything you’ve ever done and you’re a hall-of-famer in my book. Uhhh….. I don’t think Adam Dunn is a very good baseball player. He’s lazy and…. he doesn’t play good defense. And he only hits homeruns. I’ll sit back and listen, tahnks for taking my call.

Adam Dunn simply does not do what needs to be done
to win baseball games. After all, look at his track record. He’s done what he’s done, and the Reds have not won. I get tired of people saying he hits 40 homers and drives in 100 runs. How many games has he won with those home runs? Not enough to get to the World Series, I’ll tell you that, boy.

Well, Dunn and Griffey walk after this season.....
So we’ll have plenty of money freed up. The Rays hold options on Crawford until 2010, but they’re cheap and not very good, so they’ll obviously decline that. So, he’ll be a free agent, and we can take the money saved from not re-signing Dunn and Griffey, and go get Crawford.
He’s your opening day LF in 2009. Guaranteed. Bitches.

Easy one
Because he bet on credit. The money in baseball today is such that gamblers can’t make inroads by simply offering players cash to throw games. The only way that a Black Sox scandal can happen today is if the player is already in the bookie’s pocket. Pete put himself in that situation knowing full well what he was doing, and what the consequences of that action was. The essence of sport is fair competition, and Pete put his own love for “action” in front of that. It’s an unforgivable sin.
That was probably a little more serious than you were looking for, but I could go on further if you’d like. I feel very strongly about this one.

Come on, Daedalus
The word “Sins” was meant metaphorically. Pete’s “sins” were against the game of baseball itself. That’s why he’s out. Being the proprietor of a blog called “The Church of Baseball,” you should be more sensitive about this than most. At its core, baseball, like all other sports, is a competition. Willingly putting yourself in a position that comprimises the competition is the worst thing you can do to the game.
Plenty of people were assholes on and off the field. Very few put themselves in a position to discredit the game entirely.

BLEE2525 IS PRO WIFE-BEATING
Allegedly.
I’m not saying that betting on baseball is worse than beating your wife. And a dude with no hands. And a black guy for being “uppity.” That’s ridiculous.
I’m saying that with regard to the Baseball Hall of Fame, committing an act that has the potential to ruin the competitive nature of the game is reason enough to deny entry.
What the hell is so difficult to understand about this?

I hate bringing up the "It's printed on every clubhouse wall" argument
but, it’s, um, printed on every clubhouse wall.
Don’t bet on baseball. There’s no gray area, no room for interpretation. Bet on baseball, you’re banned for life. Period.
The Black Sox scandal almost killed MLB. It took a larger-than-life figure in the biggest media market obliterating every record in the books to bring it back. Again, the only way gamblers could get back into the game is somebody betting on credit. Down 100 large? “Hey, you don’t have to lose it, just keep it close.”
I understand loving the way Pete played the game. But you don’t see a problem with betting on credit in a game you have influence over?

Rose bet on the game and he shouldnt go the the HOF. i was just saying that as betting is a bad mark on the game, so is anything (such as spousal abuse) that mars the public image of the player. HOFers should hit well and be boy scouts, is all im saying.

I think it's Paul Bako
and I don’t think it’s particularly close. Have you seen his veteran presence? The way he handles a pitching staff? How he blocks balls in the dirt? The way he frames pitches on the corners? Those are things that don’t get measured by the stats. That’s why Bako’s better. Also, his stats are better.

BK, my man, Scott Hatteberg is a fine player.
He’s what they call a “professional” and not only that, he’s a leader in the clubhouse. He’s the kind of guy that team like the Reds with some young players could use more guys like Scott Hatteberg. In fact, there are some people in this game of baseball—and I know these people- who will tell you that if you were to field a team of eight or nine or ten Scott Hattebergs you’d have a team with a lot- and I mean a lot- of professional clubhouse leaders.

Well Ken, let me ask you a question.
A team like the Padres isn’t going to give up a player like Jody Gerut for nothing. So what would you think that the Reds should give the Padres for Jody Gerut? And then Ken, let me ask you another question. What would you suppose that the Reds do with Corey Patterson should they acquire Jody Gerut? I mean, the Reds brought in Corey Patterson and they’re paying him a lot of money to play centerfield and that just happens to be the postion that your guy Gerut also plays.

I was just reading about this Super Two player nonsense
and delaying Jay Bruce’s arbitration by a year. By my calculations, the Reds should be able to safely call him up NOW and delay his arbitration.

I got June 8
You need 2 years and 86 days to be eligible for Super 2. September days don’t count.
31 days in August
31 days in July
24 days in June
____
86 days
June 8 gives him 85 days this season, which would make him ineligible for Super 2 in 2010.

Without checking the CBA,
I thought Super 2 eligibility involved how many days of service time other people in your year had. Usually falls in mid-June some time but with some variance.

You're close
You have to be in the top 17% of your year in terms of performance, but you also have to have at least 2 years, 86 days to be eligible.

I googled Super Two player
first item was from the Mariners beat writer’s blog. It has a good explanation of it. It’s hard to explain but here’s the key graf:
Since 1990, the average minimum amount of service time for a “Super Two’’ eligible player has been two years, 135 days. If the team wants to avoid going to arbitration with Clement at the end of the 2010 season - and keep paying him “peanuts’’ in 2011, instead of a seven-figure wage - it has to make sure he does not have two years, 135 days of service time by the end of 2010. At a minimum. Just to be safe, the team might want to wait another seven to 10 days to be sure.
If Bruce came up tomorrow, he would accrue 128 days of service time (128 days until the end of the season).

I'm almost positive....
September days don’t count towards service time.
I am absolutely positive that you need 2 years, 86 days of service time to be eligible for the Super 2 Designation

Key phrase
if he has accumulated at least 86 days of service during the immediately preceding season AND he ranks in the top 17 percent in total service in the class
Its the top 17 percent thing that’s the key. It has to fit both criteria. So if Bruce isn’t among the top 17 percent, he can have more than 86 days of service time.
And September does count. The Mariner blog says the most service time a player can accrue in a season is 172 days, although there are generally 183 days in a baseball season.

Here's what drives me crazy..
They announcers (namely Marty) always harp on the team when they don’t get bunts down and they always imply (or state directly) that it’s something that could be practiced and mastered. But the thing is, there’s not a team that always bunts successfully. Why is bunting not considered a skill like hitting or pitching or chainsaw juggling that some people just can’t do as well as others. Why is it assumed that bunting is like riding a bike?
