Bruce Almighty -

According to Hal McCoy baseball seer and semi-sentient reporter, Jay Bruce will be up with the big club by this weekend. This should spell the end of the Corey Patterson debacle. Jay will play center field  and i don't think that the Reds will suffer much defensively from this move. in fact this may be the first time in quite a while that i agree with sMarty. Now would also be a good time to let BP play some SS and get Freel into the game at 2nd base. Although Jannish is showing good plate presence and can definately play SS better than Kepp or Jerry Jr.

Who will be the lead off man. Because we know that Dusty is going to keep BP at 2b. Bruce, I guess - although it would make more sense to put him lower in the order until he gets comfortable.

I'd like

Jannish SS                                                                                                                                Dunn LF                                                                                                                                         BP 2b                                                                                                                                              EdE  3b                                                                                                                                      Griffey RF                                                                                                                                      Votto 1b                                                                                                                                       Bruce CF                                                                                                                                        Ross C                                                                                                                                           P

Jannish give  a pro AB and works the pitcher into a longer count than CoPat  or Freel.. He might be Ok  until Kepp gets back.

When Bruce comes up I think he'll be here to stay. And I think this means that  most likely Corey will be DFA'd, despite his contract.

What do you think about the coming of the BRUCE.

The way I heard it (and I may not have heard all of it) ....

...was Thom was simply ))))HYPOTHESIZING LOUDLY!(((( that if the Reds intend JB to play CF this season they would have had him playing CF in AAA. And personally, I think that Thom may be on to something. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not opposed to him playing CF, I just think that the Reds might be thinking of him as a fourth outfielder/Griffey’s backup/the DH in June’s 9 road interleague games.

The source of information was from listening to Hal talk to sMarty during last night's game.

Anyone listening to the game via WLW heard the discussion. Hal seemed almost adamant that J. would be up this weekend. He had talked to Uncle Jocko and that was the impression that Hal had gotten from their conversation. Hal is not one to spread shit. He usually won’t reveal information if he isn’t pretty certain that it is accurate.

I agree with this move, if it's made

I’m still concerned about the strike zone judgement (12BB, 41K), but Patterson has looked awful. Of course, so has Jr, and he’s not going anywhere soon.

Often wrong, never uncertain.

by sidnancy on May 22, 2008 2:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i also have this concern

but he’s getting so many hits that he’s OBPing almost .400. He should have an insanely high career BABIP because he makes such good contact. Wehn you go see him play, he’ll smoke one or two line drives to center field every game.

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

by boobs on May 22, 2008 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Patterson doesn't have the ability that J. has:

From what I’ve read from those here who’ve seen him play J. makes strong contact (a la Hobbs) and can play a pretty decent OF. I think leading him off could work, but I’d rather see someone else..who I don’t know – if not Jannish

Something to consider

Some here seem to be concerned about “Who should leadoff?” Only once in the past 7 years has the NL had an average OBP over .340 from the leadoff position, so the Reds could stick almost anyone there and get average or better production. I’d hit any middle infielder (BP, Janish, Cherry) or Freel there.

Of course, I’m a car salesman, not a major league manager.

Often wrong, never uncertain.

LOS ANGELES — It is like an old movie poster: “Coming Soon, Jay Bruce.”

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty saw Bruce play Sunday in Louisville, “Saw him ground out twice and hit a home run over the right field fence.”

So he knows, first hand, how well the 21-year-old outfielder is doing — ripping Triple-A pitching to shreds.

“If he keeps playing like this, we’re going to have to get him up here some time soon,” said Jocketty. “What we don’t want to do is bring him up and not have him play.”

There are cynics who believe Bruce is being held back so the Reds can save a year of arbitration. If he is called up before a certain date this year, the clock on arbitration starts immediately.

If they wait until that date, arbitration won’t start until next year.

The dates? May 25? June 1? June 15?

“I honestly don’t know that date,” said Jocketty. “I’ve heard sometime in June but it doesn’t play into anything.”

Bruce is hitting .369 with 10 homers and 37 RBIs in 45 games. He also has 41 strikeouts.

by Fat Vegas Alan on May 22, 2008 5:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah right, Walt

“I honestly don’t know that date.” and “It doesn’t play into anything.” Does he really think we’re that stupid? Of COURSE delaying his free-agency/arbitration a year means everything. And if I were Walt, knowing that date would be one of the first things I would’ve learned upon taking the GM post.

I read on another blog where someone figured out that the earliest Bruce could be brought up is May 24. That’s Saturday. But since the Reds are on the coast, I figure they’ll wait until Monday (off-day before a homestand) to call up Bruce. I think Jocketty will tell Dusty that it’s time to pull the plug on the Corey Patterson debacle.

It's About Time

It’s a pity that it took over a quarter of a season what anyone could see back in March—heck, back when Dusty was living the fool’s paradise that Corey Patterson was a viable starting center fielder and leadoff hitter. He’s the modern day Marvel Wynne. Of course, the problem with this team is that they do not have a natural leadoff hitter. Janish is hitting OK now, but he’s a 25 year old rookie with a career .265 BA and .740 OPS in the minors. Something tells me he is not going to be the second coming of Rickey Henderson. Also, Bruce is not an option because while I love his skills (speed, power, throwing arm), he possesses a couple of notable flaws (over 3 to 1 K/W ratio, strikes out a quarter of the time he comes to the plate). There is no way he is going to hit over .350 in the bigs with those numbers. He needs to be given space to develop as a hitter, in a lower end of the batting order. I guess that leaves Freel, regardless of where they have to put him to rationalize his playing time, although with Ryan you always know he is just one collision away from self-decapitation.

by tonywf on May 23, 2008 4:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

bruce

has had no problem adjusting at every level, and i think, despite his low walk rate, he will easily get on base at a .350-.360 clip

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

by boobs on May 23, 2008 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree boobs

but I disagree with Tony. “Of course, the problem with this team is that they do not have a natural leadoff hitter.” That is a problem, however. the most pressing problem is getting a big banging RH RBI guy in the line up. So far BP’s done all right and EdE shows flashes, but neither is that consistent. Bringing up Bruce isimperative, BUT he does bring another LH hitter into the lineup. And despite my earlier comments to the contrary. Bruce could be a Hobbs-like lead off man. Hobbs was ok there, doncha think?

BUBUBUBUBUBUBUB

by Madville on May 23, 2008 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bruce, Leadoff?

That would be a mistake. He strikes out too much. He’s not going to hit that high in the bigs, at least at first. He wasn’t even a lead off hitter in the minors. And the only reason his OBP is near the .360 mark in the minors is because of his BA. In the minors, you can strike out a quarter of the time and hit .350. You can count on one hand the number of people who do it in the bigs. In fact, I can’t think of one who has done it consistently, ever. If you want to look at his on base skills, you need to look at the walks, and when you do you quickly realize that his OBP in the bigs is probably going to be in the low .300s his first year (he draws less than a walk every 14 ABs [and it’s 1 walk per 21.4 BAs, if you exclude the intentional walks this season]). He’s also been an inconsistent base stealer throughout his minor league career. This is just not the right position in the order to stick him in as a 21 year old rookie. You need to let him adjust to big league pitching in the 7th or 8th slot.

by tonywf on May 24, 2008 3:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course its not 'right' to put J. in the leadoff position.

But who then -

You say no to Bruce
Votto – no-
BP no
Griffy – disallowed
EdE – nah
Dunn – don’t see that
Bako ? shouldn’t even be starting
Jannish – Maybe, he actually works the count/Hairston give up a tremendous amount opf defense to have him in the lineup

Freel would be Ok, but then you either have to sit EdE or Move Brandon to SS.

Who would you suggest

BUBUBUBUBUBUBUB

by Madville on May 24, 2008 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anyone But Bruce.....

Seriously, I would bat Dunn lead off before Bruce (actually, if it were me, I would put Brandon at SS [his natural position] and put Freel at second and hit him lead off). Don’t get me wrong. I love having Bruce up here. I think it was a tragedy to keep him in AAA for the first quarter of the season. Nevertheless, I am always a realist and the stats (no matter how much our faith-driven hearts would deny it) are clear. I know of no .350 hitter in the bigs who strikes out 25% of the time. I have never seen, in my lifetime, a successful lead off hitter strikes out a quarter of the time and draws less than a walk every 10 AB. There is no reason to put that kind of pressure on a 21 year old rookie who strikes out a quarter of the time he comes to the plate and does not draw walks (and has no experience batting leadoff as a professional). That is a recipe for disaster. I am not even happy with them batting him second, and it only looks good now because he is off to a hot start (of course, his first games were against the Pirates). He will cool off, and when he gets in his first slump, or when the league figures out that they do not have to pitch him in the strike zone with two strikes, having him go through that in the top of the order as a rookie is a huge mistake.

by tonywf on May 31, 2008 2:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

god damn it

i just had a longass post in reference to this claim, and it all got deleted. Lemme try to say it all over again.

One way to look at it is that Bruce’s lack of walks is a huge hindrance. another way to look at it is that his contact more than makes up for his lack of walks. He only walks once every 11.7 PA career, but he has a .366 on-base percentage. Tony Gwynn did this, too. He walked just once every 12 PA his first two seasons of more than 60 games in the majors, yet managed .355 and .410 OBPs. Gwynn even managed a career .388 OBP despite just one walk every 12.8 PA. Ichiro has a career OBP of .378 despite a walk every 15.3 PA. It might be unfair to compare to Ichiro given his gimmick swing, but is it fair to compare him to a Hall of Famer and a future Hall of Famer? Yes, it is.

Bruce does need to work on his walks, but i think he will. He’s still only 21 and probably has a lot of growing to do. But at this point, he is head and shoulders ahead of Patterson and Freel in regards to who should be the starting centerfielder and who would make better leadoff hitters.

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

by boobs on May 24, 2008 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gwynn also struck out once every 23.5 plate appearances

Ichiro strikes out once every 11.2 plate appearances.

Jay Bruce strikes out once every 4.4 PAs in the minors. He doesn’t make contact anywhere near as much as those two.

But I am fine with him coming up and taking over CF, though I would not lead him off.

he did it once in 2007. But the Reds’ batting order page from that year doesn’t show it. So I’m guessing it was an early substitution, and that he’s never been pencilled in as the leadoff hitter.
