That is Corey Patterson's batting line since April 9th. That's over 108 plate appearances. In the 20 games he has started in that span, he has batted 1st or 2nd every time.
CAN WE PLEASE STOP GIVING HIM EXTRA AT BATS EVERY GAME????

Trying to generate trade value
The only thing I can think is Walt wants to see Corey Patterson play well for a stretch and trade him. Now of course Dusty if he does have orders to play him, feels perfectly safe in playing him at the top of the order. He has a toothpick and you can’t question it.

I guess I can see some (minute) logic in letting him play out of his contract
Perhaps they don’t want to dump him without giving him a real shot, but this will be 3 out of the last 4 years where his OPS+ will be 80 or lower. I don’t know what other proof they need.
Honestly, I’ve just reached my peak of frustration with the fact that Patterson and Griffey continue to bat in the top 3 while the better hitters have consistently batted 4th or lower. It’s not all their fault for the Reds struggles, but damn, when the team is having such a problem with scoring runs day in and day out, why does he keep giving the most at bats to the players that are struggling? I just don’t get it.

Dusty Logic
I find hard to comprehend and actually don’t want to. I wouldn’t mind seeing Griffey bat 6th and Corey 8th.

Is there a way to compare the Reds' top third of the order against the rest of MLB's top thirds?
And is there a way to compare it to those of the past few years?

Best I can do is 1-2 hitters
The Reds are 11th in the NL in OPS. 13th in OBP.

They've got the second fewest strikeouts.
But they’re dead last in BB.
Aggressive at-bats, baby.
by Fat Vegas Alan on May 22, 2008 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hard to strike out when you swing at the first pitch every time up!
speaking of aggressive at bats, is it just me, or is votto starting to swing at pitches early in counts much more than he was when he was hot? it seemed like he was having great at bats earlier, waiting on his pitch, and now he’s swing at everything.

He's been bad.
If you remove his 3 HR game he’s been sub-Mendoza over his last 80 ABs.
12 walks against 17 strikeouts.
Is it because he’s a rookie or is it because he just hasn’t figured out how to be apropriately aggressive?

Oh, and they've been caught stealing twice as often as nearly every other team.
10 CS in 29 attempts.
Aggressively not clogging the basepaths, baby.

Slyde, you should send this to tHom. Seriously.
I think he’d be interested to know that the Reds’ #1 and #2 hitters are 13th in collective/aggregate OBP.
He and Marty are tripping over themselves trying to find ways to point out that the offense is not working and Corey Patterson is largely the reason why.
by Fat Vegas Alan on May 22, 2008 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
uh...
both thom and marty – moreso thom – have been talking about how patterson is not getting it done. thom had tried to be polite about it, but last night he flat out said patterson is not cutting it and why in the world is jay bruce still in the minors and patterson still playing for the reds.

Right.
But they’re not providing the numbers to prove it!

The Dusty factor
If the Brennamen attack Patterson Dusty could circle the wagons. He’s got a history of turning his team against the media when things go poorly.

I guess if he has to be on the roster still he could be a 3 million dollar defensive replacement for Freel or Hopper…I just never really understood this signing from day 1 and it seems to look worse everyday.

don't worry, he'll be gone on tuesday
according to rumors, bruce is coming up on tuesday and patterson is gone. fay apparently believes the rumors have some merit.

Fay's just stating the obvious
It’s two months into the season, the Reds are coming back from a west coast road trip, and Patterson sucks fat ass. I know Krivsketty missed the turn the few dozen times, but all roads lead to Bruce’s call up tomorrow/Tuesday.

But it’s just a “hunch” based on Kitty’s impression of Bruce.

i have the same hunch
i did last week. they couldn’t tear apart the team on a winning streak, but after the winning streak, people are soured by the losing streak. this losing feels worse than the pre-winning streak losing, and bob’ll do something about it. now that the brennamen and others in the cincy rags and airwaves are finally starting to ask why patterson is on the team, something will be done. it has to be – i don’t know if i can stand it much longer!
i’m afraid we can’t do anything about griffey batting third, though. at least he’s hitting a little of late. he’s had two near misses on homers, so 598 is just around the corner. right? right?
by Daedalus on May 22, 2008 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Man I hope so
He does seem to be hitting a lot better the past week or so. If he could just get #600 out of the way, I think he’ll be more relaxed and become genuinely dangerous again. When he’s on people are still scared of him. I’d love to see Dunn-Bruce-Jr at 3-4-5, but I’m not holding my breath.

FWIW...
He’s drawn 21 walks so far this season. And that’s pretty close to his career BB/PA rate.
by Fat Vegas Alan on May 22, 2008 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not sure the decision will be based
on the day to day politics on the club.
I think it has more to do with Bruce taking his assignment to Louisville and continuing to beat the ever living shit out of the ball.
If he really has been delayed by plate discipline concerns, then I find that heartening rather than frustrating. At least for the organization.

This is not a vindication of Corey Patterson as leadoff swinger...
but how bad was our defense the past 3 games? Between the balls thrown into the dugout, and the botched plays at the plate, and the wild pitches and passed balls, this team has been sloppy. Is that the time zone factor, the curse of the West coast?
Despite all that, though, we only scored 8 runs this series. Less than three runs a game wont cut it, especially when you are handing the other team runs.
Patterson did save a couple last night with a diving catch, but offensively, he has not been much more than a body with a piece of wood in his hand for most of the season.
So yeah, Jay Bruce is overdue like that library book under your bed.
Tanzen!
