All I asked for on my birthday was a win from the Reds. And a pony. And a trampoline. And a sit-n-spin. And one of those water guns that shoots water like 50 feet. And an anti-gravity device. And my very own smoke monster. And a city to be named after me. And a foam "We're #1" finger. That's all.

Janish No. 2
Yeah, the rookie defensive specialist with less than week of major league experience bats No. 2. That makes sense….Do a straight reverse of Nos. 1 through 7 and you’d have a better batting order. It’s the Bizarro World!

OH YEAH
DAVID ROSS!!!
"God has blessed me and I will continue to do my best for him. This is more important than anything I could do in baseball." -Albert Pujols
Question.
How many major league managers would have issued two IBBs to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth?
Any idea?
I found that utterly bizarre
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it. One wild pitch, and it’s game over.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Martin was already on third with one out
a wild pitch would’ve ended it either way. Baker wanted the force at home.
Here’s the break down:
Bottom 9th: LA Dodgers
- R. Freel in center field
- D. Weathers relieved B. Bray
- E. Encarnacion at third
- R. Martin singled to shortstop, R. Martin to second on shortstop P. Janish’s throwing error
- J. Kent grounded out to second, R. Martin to third
- J. Loney intentionally walked
- M. Kemp intentionally walked, J. Loney to second
- B. DeWitt singled to left, R. Martin scored, J. Loney to third, M. Kemp to second
Curse and drat, he's outmaneuvered us.

I don't remember seeing it before
And I still don’t like it. The guy was batting .320, fer crissakes. His OBP is .390. You just knew that wasn’t going to end well.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
i think the reds should have brought in an outfielder to play
in the infield so that the infield could have spread out, a flyball to the OF would have won i anyway

Among the odd shit that Baker pulled last night
this was merely a small part.
For instance, twice (in the 4th and 6th) Brad Penny walked the leadoff batter and both times was out of the inning in 10 pitches or less.
Penny was drowning last night and the Reds kept throwing him a life saver.
Curse and drat, he's outmaneuvered us.
by Man Mountain on May 20, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Both times
a struggling Penny walked a very poor hitter (Arroyo, Bako), only to have the next batter immediately give him a free out by bunting.
The 4th inning was particularly near-sighted because the Reds were up by 3, had Penny at 60+ pitches and yet were playing for one run. By bunting Arroyo to second, Baker took the bat out of Freel’s hands (who had good career numbers against Penny and already had a hit) and left it up to Corey Patterson to try to get Arroyo in.
As I said last night, even with the errors (why is Hairston at SS?), that thing had all the markings of a game Dusty loved to death.
Curse and drat, he's outmaneuvered us.
by Man Mountain on May 20, 2008 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions
gotcha
I was focusing on the out of the inning in 10 or less pitches. I agree that Freel should have never been asked to bunt there. The Reds are wasting too many chances early by bunting
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
well
they seem to make struggling pitchers work.
A lead off walk should usually mean, “make this guy throw us strikes.” For Dusty’s Reds it seems to mean, “omg, get that guy to second immediately, like right now, like I don’t care who does it or if it costs us an out!“
Curse and drat, he's outmaneuvered us.
by Man Mountain on May 20, 2008 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions
one of those double edged sword things
You could have burned Coco in that situation and then forced extra innings and hope to survive. The Dodgers did just that by bringing in Saito to pitch the ninth in a tie game and pulled out the win.
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
I don't see the second edge to the sword.
Okay, you burn Coco. You have other relievers. If you leave Weathers in, you are much more likely not to see any of those relievers.
I mean, we all know this…I just don’t see why Dusty wouldn’t consider it. I see other high-leverage situations as much more difficult decisions, but that one seemed easy.
other edge
If Coco comes in and pitches a scoreless ninth and the game goes on then you are left with who? Exactly. I’m not saying it was the right move but I understand what he was trying to do.
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
No, I see that.
I’m just saying that you bring in Coco, and you live to see another inning. Walk the bases loaded with Weathers on the mound and one out, and you’re almost certainly never going to get to worry about who pitches the tenth.
Burton and Fogg were still in the ‘pen.
As any renaissance man knows
When you’re spoiling your dinner guests with pheasant, you must wait for exactly the right to serve the digestif. If that means allowing your creme brulee to torch the dining room, those are the wages of inspired hosting.

by Man Mountain on May 20, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I would like to see the closer used in high-leverage situations
No matter what inning it is.
But Dusty is not the kind of manager to do that. Neither is Torre, which drove me nuts.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
i dunno
im becoming one of the lone dusty defenders, but your statement “If Coco comes in and pitches a scoreless ninth and the game goes on”... that’s the point. To make the game go on.
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
I understand
I would have started the ninth with him (Coco). That being said if the inning would unfolded the same way with him on the mound I would have done the same thing and walked the next two batters as well.
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
i understand
but given how confining that must be for a pitcher, i dont think it’s a good idea. If you walk the first guy, the double play’s in order. If you walk the second guy, the pitcher knows he cant walk to the next guy. If you get to 2-0 in that situation, he pretty much has to groove one right… down.. broadway. It’s not a good situation to put the pitcher in. I know Kemp was up, and he was 4 for 4, but at that point you have to take your chances i think.
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
Torre
thinks you can bring in your closer into a tie game in the 9th if you are at home, but not if you are on the road.
He gets quite irate when questioned about this. He thinks it’s so obvious that even asking about it is stupid.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Big advantage to the Dodgers tonight
Unless Matt is feeling good, he will probably still suck and I don’t see the Reds doing much in the offensive department tonight.
The price we pay for Bailey’s unwillingness to throw his best and inability to callup Bruce.
What's more
Following a scuffle this afternoon, Bailey slashed Jay Bruce’s hamstrings while vowing to reinsert the color black into the the Reds home caps.
Curse and drat, he's outmaneuvered us.
by Man Mountain on May 20, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Not only that.........
Bailey threw a 98mph fastball and almost decapiated Jay on contact. When Walt Jocketty got hold of the velocity report and was moving to call him up after his next start, Homer tuned down the velocity lower, to 85mph levels giving hope to all the Josh Foggs around the baseball world.
Oh, Jay is ok, he went 2-4 tonight.
by Johnnypronto on May 20, 2008 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Sure he can
Which is why everybody is so mad at him. He touched 98 during a late start last year for Cincy and touched 98 occassionally in AA 2 years ago.
Homer cares more about hunting and groupies than pitching up to his ability. Thus the sadness and journalistic outrage. Homer could stop alot of pain for us but he chooses to sit on his butt.
I hope much like 2 years ago he decides it is time to take it up another notch. Ya know, there are some guys on the Reds roster that may like names no longer being on the lockerroom named “Fogg” or “Belisle”.
by Johnnypronto on May 20, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Homer can throw 98
He just can’t control it at that speed. I saw him in Dayton hit 98 a few times, but they were always balls. He has good control of the fastball at 94.

The Yankees suck big, green, warty pickles. I thought it was a mistake when I looked at the box score in the 2nd inning and saw the score was 9-0…with only one run earned.
