(Don't worry about the meaning of the pictures.  It's lame.)

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Bronson Arroyo 2-4 6.08 1.63 43 18

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Brad Penny 5-4 5.09 1.49 28 18

Penny has had his ass handed to him in his last two starts.  He did hold the Reds to just 1 run over 6 innings back on April 21st, but that was a different team, one that wasn't carrying a 6-game winning streak.

Arroyo is coming off of consecutive excellent starts.  It's good that he is starting the series opener so that the LA nightlife hasn't gotten to him yet.

It'll be interesting to see how the Reds handle this West Coast trip given their past history perpetual suck in the Pacific Time Zone.  They've lost their last 6 at Dodger Stadium, so they are due.  No better time than tonight to win one.

On the main page under the main stories, the comment count is displaing in all red for me, making it difficult to see which articles have new comments. Anyone else? Screencap goodness:

Man, I started doing the giddy dance

They played a Replacements song at the end of HIMYM!!! That just doesn’t happen. And not just any Mats song. They played “Here Comes a Regular,” which is one of the most pleasingly sad and depressing songs ever written.

Plus a Radiohead tune to open the show, but I didn’t care about that as much.

Whoa

Jim Edmonds just made a Jim Edmonds running over the shoulder catch on a Hunter Pence drive to the hill in Houston. Begin the “yeah, but another centerfielder would have gotten there faster and hauled it in facing forward” debate.

Worse record than the Reds

Although their record last year at this point was worse than it is now.

by Brendanukkah on May 19, 2008 9:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's ugly in Yankeeland

Yes, the record was worse last year. But last year, they were scoring tons of runs. They just weren’t winning games. This year, they aren’t getting on base.

It doesn’t help that they have about 7 first basemen, none of whom is any good. If the Reds aren’t going to call up Andy Phillips, maybe they can trade him back to the Yanks.

I thought the same thing

No way I watch anything ESPN related for the next three days. They’ll probably have a half hour special to see how the Yankees fans feel about Lester’s no-hitter.

Reds Scraptastic Lineup

Ryan Freel 3b
Corey Patterson cf
Ken Griffey Jr. rf
Brandon Phillips 2b
Adam Dunn lf
Joey Votto 1b
Jerry Hairston ss
Paul Bako c
Bronson Arroyo p

Afy says that Edwin was given the night off for not running out on the tarmac to his position on the bus. He’s been scuffling in his last 50 at bats so night off seems reasonable.

God forgive me, but I saw this comment about tonight’s lineup and I thought I’d share it:

Good lord is makes me giddy to have these two on the top of the lineup now before I get blasted hear me out. I love Having that much speed at the top of the lineup because it allows Dusty to play small ball.

After another comment by “CSA” expressed amusement at the lineup, “Rob” had this sharp retort:

ok CSA post your lineup each day so we can laugh at that. Lighten up.
Dont you think Dusty Baker might know a thing or two about baseball and how to order the line-up since he played in the big leagues for 19 seasons and has managed for 15 more. And he is around his players day after day so he can tell when they feel good and when they feel worn out.

Curse and drat, he's outmaneuvered us.

Damn it

My friend who works for a big shot producer offered me his 3rd row tickets to tonight’s game . . . and tonight of all nights I have to work late, and so I won’t be able to go.

Although I have to admit, if it was Edinson pitching instead of Arroyo, I might have come down with a case of food poisoning.

educate me

I found RR and joined here for one reason: I am looking for someone to explain either the logic of Griffey batting 3rd, or for evidence of Dusty’s man-crush on Griff.

by skaks on May 19, 2008 9:22 PM EDT   0 recs

griffey not batting third

that’s like the center fielder not leading off. You just don’t do that.

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

by boobs on May 19, 2008 9:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Welcome

I don’t know that the man-crush is specific to Dusty. Narron and Mackanin pretty much deferred to Griffey too. Moving him to right field was a coup, and the Mackanin once removed him for defensive purposes. Once. He’s batted third at his pleasure for his whole career.

So to answer your question, it’s out of deference to his reputation, and not to what would currently benefit the team the most.

by Brendanukkah on May 19, 2008 9:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

thanks, but...

I appreciate the kind and diplomatic reply for the new guy. But I was really hoping for something about Griff having comprimising photos, or a secret clause in his contract that he gets to make out lineup cards.

by skaks on May 19, 2008 9:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Ok, how 'bout this

If Dusty drops him in the lineup, it won’t be boxes of pennies that Grif fills his locker with.

i heard it involved a camera and a blumpkin

Dunn wouldn't give Dusty a "smokey tornado"

And now he’s batting 7th. Make of that what you will.

Or help Dusty pick out a new merkin

(I had to look that one up after I heard it)

Someone with a BBRef subscription?

Can someone tell me where Hank Aaron batted the last year or two of his career? Or ant of the other non-enhanced guys in the top ten career HR list?

Aaron

1975 – all but 11 PAs batting 3rd, 4th, or 5th.
1976 – all but 17 PAs batting 4th or 5th

I guess what I was looking for was how much he batted in the coveted 3-hole. (Was it as coveted then?)

"Got a bump on the ole noggin, but otherwise god. And I get a new vehicle probably, w00t!"

by jch24 on May 19, 2008 10:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Back in the day

Isn’t the 3-hole the new 4-hole? I thought the sluggers always hit #4 back in the day.

by rojosoto on May 19, 2008 10:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well

Hank Aaron played the last 2 years of his career with the Brewers.

In 1975 he had 545 PAs:
Batting 3rd: 45
Batting 4th: 375
Batting 5th: 112

in 1976, he had 308 PAs:
Batting 4th: 233
Batting 5th: 58

So Hank batted at the power spots in Milwaukee. His last season in ATL he also got all but 40 of his 240 PAs at clean-up.

Curse and drat, he's outmaneuvered us.

by Man Mountain on May 19, 2008 10:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

the last line should be 340 PAs in '74

Curse and drat, he's outmaneuvered us.

by Man Mountain on May 19, 2008 10:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Thanks

I still maintain that Junior should hit 5th at best right now, probably 6th. And I looooove Junior.

by jch24 on May 19, 2008 10:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

BTW

the info you asked for isn’t behind the subscription wall at BBRef (I’m almost positive). If you click on the “Splits” option, you can find breakdowns by batting order, both career and year to year.

Here’s Aaron’s ‘74 season splits

Curse and drat, he's outmaneuvered us.

by Man Mountain on May 19, 2008 10:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Again, thanks

I’ve never sat down and actually played with the BBRef interface yet so I’m not sure what’s available sub and non-sub. It’s not imposing or anything, I really think it’s a subconscious fear that I’ll end up not sleeping for three days and alienating everyone I know. Except you guys of course.
