This series of posts says nothing about Indians fans, but it says a lot about you. I could post a ton of really nasty stuff about Cincinnati, but what would be the point?
I find it very strange that any of the folks here felt the need to come over to LGT and gloat, and yet we have the post here, “Some of those LGT! guys are assholes.” For what, exactly? (And this after Rick House made a point of speaking up for Bredannukah in an e-mail to me, saying what a great guy he is, and I totally took his word for it.)
Seems like a lot of people are just afflicted with some kind of “asshole filter” where no matter what the fans of another team say, they must all be assholes. We’re all sports fans here, all baseball fans, almost all from Ohio (or connected in some way) and all rooting for a team that unfairly has to battle uphill against teams with far more money to spend.
It would be nice if the SBN cross-site integration eventually helped people realize that they shouldn’t assume everyone else is an asshole all the time.
I liked your post at LGT better. Congratulations on the sweep, see you in a few months … hopefully with a little more grace all around.

(in actual response)
this is rick house, btw, jay. i think brendan was referring to some of the comments in our q and a thread on your site, but not you in particular. When we did the q and a, i thought it was pretty light-hearted and fun, and any trash-talking was tongue-in-cheek. But some of the comments at LGT came across as unnecessarily nasty (“What a thorough beatdown”), especially from an outsider’s perspective. I’m sure our comments would seem that way from an Indians fan’s perspective.
Anyway, the banter’s all in fun. I look forward to another Q and A for our next series
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
Folks on both sides failed to get the tone of a friendly rivalry that we tried to put out there. I didn’t jump in to correct anything, because it’s pretty lame for writers to complain about readers not understanding what’s written — that’s our job.
I want to assure you, and everyone here, that from the perspective of an Indians fan, nothing you guys were doing over here was coming off all that well — and maybe it shouldn’t, and maybe you shouldn’t care anyway. I’m not going to tell you otherwise.
But the cross-site gloating is lame, and something we have openly discouraged on our site the few times it’s come up. The mods here can attest that I expressed strong views about this on the SBN moderators forum weeks ago, long before this series.
coming over and gloat
I wouldn’t call it gloating. We visit other sites all the time and comment. usually just messing around. And after having read your game threads I see that our humor doesn’t really differ from you guys all that much. Sorry if any one was offended
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
You posted the following diary last season
Dear Reds fans,As co-author of your sister site LetsGoTribe.com, I just wanted to thank you for sending us your retard user Justin0000whatever without any provocation whatsoever.
We’ve already got a couple of users who are a little slow, but Justin really brings a whole new retarded dimension to our roster.
Please don’t get too arrogant. I know not all of you are as retarded as Justin, but frankly, that’s not saying much. (By the way, Indians fans are actually pretty sharp on the whole—you can’t judge us based on the people you’ve met in Columbus. Cincinnati is kind of the capital of the “moron part” of Ohio, in case nobody’s clued you in. You may not have met many smart people, because they live hundreds of miles away.)
Of course Justin’s “special list” was mostly incorrect, and Reds fans, now rooting for the very worst team in baseball’s very worst division after 12 straight years of rebuilding, have very little basis for talking smack to anyone.
But that’s neither here nor there. We make lists longer than Justin’s all the time. Cleveland fans haven’t seen a championship of any kind for 43 years. The Indians were terrible for 35 years in a row. Hell, my brother had a 1978 Reds poster in his room—and who could blame him?
So we piss on your little 12-year embarassment. You people don’t know anything about suffering, even with the indigity of never-ending Pete Rose apologia, even after Jim Bowden, even after getting fleeced by Jim Bowden. I doubt many of you possess the kind of devotion, the sheer strength of character it takes to be a devoted sports fan in Cleveland, the kind of masochism that makes you buy your own kid a jersey despite a lifetime of misery.
You couldn’t handle the Tribe. Even those of you who aren’t retarded.
Just a friendly reminder from your friends at LetsGoTribe.com.
P.S. Nobody from Cincinnati gets to talk smack to anyone about racial sensitivity.
Way to stay above the fray. This was a response to a dumb diary that Justin posted over at your website, but you immediately assumed that “we” sent him over there and got all pissy about it.
Of course fanbases razz each other and of course it’s bullshit and has no bearing whatsoever on the respective teams and very little bearing on the character of the fans overall or the fans in particular or whatever godforsaken website where these fans congregate.
But your internet character, sir, seems incredibly thin-skinned and moralizing. Actually, tetchy is the perfect word for it. Which is probably responsible for the laundry list of “dos and don’ts” with which one must agree just to comment on your site.
Your commenter AngG stopped by Friday, took some ribbing and was cool about it. i.e., Get over yourself.

My post from a year ago was a sentence-by-sentence response to the post from Justin that provoked it — but I mention this only because I want people to have some understanding of why I’d have posted those things.
Regardless, it was an ill-conceived response on my part. My intent was to embararass Justin in front of his buddies over here, but it was a mistake.
Amazingly, we managed to get some friendly conversation out of that thread — including you in particular, Man Mountain — but I still regret the initial mistake.

I'd been wondering whether or not to reply to you
Guess now’s the time. I was really astonished at how people from this site were treated over on Let’s Go Tribe. It seemed there was a lot of knee-jerk hostility over there in response to some fairly innocuous questions and posts by Reds fans. Sure, mauichuck might say that he’s got a right to be hostile, but if he wants to play the suffering fan card that badly, that’s his deal.
I’ve always liked the Indians. I root for them to do well (other than in this Series, naturally). I meant what I said initially about believing that LGT was one of the best blogs on SBN. I am the one that cross-posted that All-Time Reds-Indians roster post by SuddenSam because I thought it was a great post that was of positive interest to both fan bases. I don’t do a lot of FanPosts, and I failed to provide a link. I was thinking it would be easier for our readers to see the whole post if it was right there instead of clicking on a link. That was a mistake, but I also never tried to claim it as my own.
The smugness and dismissal that my fellow Reds fans were met with was fairly shocking. We’ve gotten on civilly with most other fanbases on SBN (Cubs fans being an exception). A lot of the trash-talking elements on LGT just seemed mean. Maybe it’s the absence of tone in internet posting; I dunno. I went over to LGT today for a little “relishing the Reds victory” posts. Ill-timed? Ill-conceived? Probably. But by the same token, I don’t think I said anything too inflammatory. You and one of the other posters were talking about how you couldn’t believe that the Reds would sweep the series without the Indians trying to throw the games. I simply wrote, “Believe it.” I was proud of our boys, and it’s nice for a doormat team like the Reds being able to beat a powerhouse team like the Indians. To which you said:
But I can’t remember even one time, ever, when even the most juvenile and jerky LGT’er felt the need to go taunt the fans of a team we just beat in a series.Winning is supposed to be enough. Pretty sad.
I know that I’m in a bad mood after my team has lost three games, but come the fuck on. If that’s not an overreaction, then I don’t know what is. All three of these games were tense, well-played affairs. I had a great time watching them, and I tried to show respect for the Indians in all my posts. You guys have a great team, and I never felt safe until the third out in each game. But I didn’t feel any of that respect back. You guys acted like dicks. And I called you dicks on Red Reporter.
Just relax a little, and we’ll see you in June.
by Brendanukkah on May 18, 2008 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Thanks for taking the time to respond thoughtfully, and I appreciate the kind words, too.
I never thought any harm was meant by the cross-post — in fact, I specifically wrote to Ric: “I don’t imagine any harm was meant.” I tried not to make a big deal about it, but the author of that FanPost deserves that respect. This is totally ordinary, common courtesy among bloggers, which some of you might not realize.
I made as un-big of a deal out of it as I could, and had Rick not felt the need to explain the edit — rather than just saying he was doing it because it was appropriate — then none of you would even know that I had said anything. My intent was to avoid accusing or embarrassing anybody.
I share with you the “second team” rooting thing. You already know from past posts, I think, that I’ve rooted for the Reds as a “second team” since I was eight years old, when I saw George Foster hit a grand slam at Riverfront. I’ve always followed the Reds a little on the side, was pretty excited to see Griffey go back home, pretty ticked when the 99 team got screwed out of a playoff spot, and actually cringed when Dusty got hired. Other than the Indians, there are no teams I would rather see winning more than the Reds, my adopted hometown Phillies, and whoever is playing the Yankees at the moment.
There ought to be reasonable respect among the fans, and sadly, Rick and I somehow didn’t succeed in setting the tone for that. We fell short. That said, to be frank, why would you expect equivalent respect for the two teams, at this point in time? Our team had the best record in baseball, was picked to finish 1st or a close 2nd by practically everybody, had the best record in baseball last season and returned every key player, has won 42 more games than the Reds since 2005, has the reigning Cy Young, Manager of the Year, Executive of the Year and even Medical Staff of the Year …
Look, we’re not the king-shit contenders every year, but this is kind of our time to be considered really good, no? If nobody else in baseball would act like Reds = Indians, why should we act like it? It just doesn’t seem realistic. But that’s a team thing. It’s no excuse for disrespecting fans on a personal level.
Now about today’s thread. First, I was not saying anything about intentionally losing — which, it should be obvious, was meant to be read as absurd anyway — but just that it would be an incredible turn of events if somehow the Reds sweeping the Indians somehow led to our acquiring Jay Bruce. But the main point I would make is that my post (which you quoted) was not just in response to your two words, but in response to several posts from you and others not just in that thread but also in the Game Thread. I admit, that probably wasn’t clear from your perspective, but that’s how it was for me.
We’ve got some deep bitterness over there at the moment, not just over the sweep, but over a month-long massive offensive lump that has squandered a brilliant run by the rotation — and squandered most of a horrible collapse by our hypothetical main rivals, the Tigers — plus 9th inning disasters, and in general, the difference between how the team is doing and our expectations for this season. These are the things that will put fans of a .500 team, very close to first place, in a totally shitty mood. And on top of that, given the situation, it isn’t really possible for us to be feeling “respect” for the team that beat us when Brandon Phillips played a big role in the sweep. That has nothing to do with respect for your team, the organization or you guys as fans — it’s personal, between BP and Indians fans.
But in general, it’s probably a bad strategy for fans of a team on a six-game winning streak to go on a troll-gloating expedition on a fansite for the team they just swept — and expect those other fans to take it well. I really doubt that it would be all that different over here if our positions were reversed, but one thing I do know is that I’d be bitchslapping any of our people over at LGT if they came over here to gloat.
We’ve got standards within our group of fans, and despite what Man Mountain may think, we don’t consider that a bad thing. And really — let me assure all of you — I really couldn’t give a rat’s ass if you don’t think it’s cool. I mean, you could not even imagine how much I don’t care. We’re happy with how we’ve chosen to do things, it’s working for us. RR can do something else, that’s fine, too.
id like to just enjoy this win and be done with this whole silly thing
we did not send an expedition of troll-gloaters to your site, and if RRs were out of line over there, I’m sorry. Also, I included the note in Brendanukkah’s post for clarity, not to call you out. I even defended you in the comments by saying you guys had every right to request a link.
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
Oh, hey, have I made this sweep 1% less enjoyable for you?
Gee, that’s a shame.
See you in six weeks … and just to be charitable, here’s some good material for the next round of smack-talk. I’ll be waiting ….

We just aren't that organized
Some of us post at other sites, but that doesn’t mean they represent RR. It’s pretty laissez-faire here. People don’t generally get bitch-slapped for things they do elsewhere.
And yeah, Ang is welcome here anytime.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Well, you know, there’s the rub … they do represent RR, whether you want them to or not. That’s just how it is.
But look … Justin apologized, he felt bad and was embarrassed, didn’t want to be causing RR people to be viewed poorly … these are good things. It means that you have a community here that people want to be a part of. It means that as a group you’re creating expectations on one another, mostly for how people behave within RR, but sometimes extending outside as well.
All societies do this, all clubs do this, always unofficially, sometimes officially as well. The fact that these groups (LGT and RR) are online doesn’t exempt them from functioning in the ways that all groups of people do.
Yeah well
I think expectations here are a bit…different.
Among other things, we’ve been known to invade other blogs and take over their game threads for a night. Though it’s usually a divisional rival. That’s probably were the “let’s invade LGT” came from. It’s kind of a tradition for us
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
not to shoot myself in the foot
but the internet is a little different than society. I don’t think we take things as seriously here as we do in reality. I do not a single person on the blog in reality, or if I do I haven’t connected them with their blog alias. I don’t really expect to meet anyone on this blog, I may go to the RR wiffle ball game, prolly won’t, but most of my friends aren’t into baseball, and those who are, are mostly Indians and Cubs fans. The reason I use this blog is because it is about the only place I can really talk Reds baseball. And these people are really intelligent and funny as hell. The historical, political, topical references that are made at RR have to be considered above average for a baseball blog. I have learned a lot from this blog. I had heard the term sabrametrics before RR, but I never really thought twice about it. I was smart enough to know that wins and loses didn’t really just a pitchers effectiveness, but I didn’t really look at peripharls. I didn’t look at hitters beyond their batting average.

i think we are a little jealous
for those of us who live in “disputed territory” or go to college in Ohio are around a lot of Indians fans. I have been a Reds fan for 13 years, 3 of those years the Reds had a winning record, 1 of those years they made the playoffs (NLCS), 1 of those years they just absolutly broke my heart. The Indians have done a lot of things right and have had a little good luck, the Reds have done a lot of things wrong (see Jeremy Sowers) and have had some back luck (see any of the top pitching prospects from the Bowden era, although they can also go into the doing things wrong catagory).

Just wanted to point out
that Cleveland defaulted on their loans in 1978 under Kucinich’s watch. That’s pretty bad for a major city to do that. I try not to express my political views on this site that much, but I do kinda pimp my economic philosophy a bit too much (ie Friedman and free market econ). I’ll try to work on that with my non-baseball related posts, but this was an easy cheap shot in retaliation to the “Stay classy, Cincinnati” quote.

but it is a little more complicated than that

Just looked at the box score
All four pitchers the Reds used today currently have ERAs under 4.00. I don’t think I’ve seen that in a very long time.
The more pictures I see of Bruce, the more I think that he probably can't even shave
so my question is this: would it be ok for me to send him my beard clippings for him to glue on? That’s not weird or anything, right?
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
Wrong Reds?

I think we've established..
.. that no matter whose fault it is, RR and LGT! can not play nice together. I think the best plan is to stay off each other’s turfs, and avoid co-mingling.
NO DAUGHTER OF MINE IS MARRYING A HUMAN CLEVELAND FAN!
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
I was curious, so I made this post comparing the two teams' starters over at LGT. Any thoughts?
Sabathia: 5.47 ERA, 1.53 WHIP in 54.1 IP
Carmona: 2.25 ERA, 1.50 WHIP in 56.0 IP
Byrd: 3.61 ERA, 1.12 WHIP in 47.1 IP
Laffey: 1.35 ERA, 0.86 in 26.2 IP
Lee: 0.67, 0.67 in 53.2 IP before today
vs.:
Harang: 3.12/1.14/69.1
Arroyo: 6.08/1.63/47.1
Cueto: 5.75/1.20/51.2
Volquez: 1.12/1.26/48.1 before today
And we’d rather forget about number 5, which has been partially Belisle, with his 7.45/1.91 in 19.1 IP, and partially Fogg…who was approximately as bad.
That said, Cueto’s numbers look a lot like Sabathia’s, Harang looks like Byrd in 20 more innings (which is something in and of itself), Arroyo looks like Carmona (or better) on a good day and Belisle on a bad day, Volquez can go head to head with Lee…
and our number 5 sucks, while Laffey has been impressive through 26 IP. So just glancing over things, if we continue to see as much bad Arroyo as we have, and Fausto continues playing way beyond his WHIP, you have a better #2 and a much better #5.
More realistically (or perhaps optimistically), I would think Carmona’s ERA would pick up a bit, and Arroyo’s would decline somewhat, so those two would be more of a wash. I like to think we’d call up Bailey, but if Laffey keeps up his small-sample-size numbers, he’d still be better. The one plus for the Reds is that Harang is an undead innings-eater.
But can Laffey keep performing like that? Can Lee or Volquez? Hellifiknow. That’s why I anticipate some more good matchups in late June.
the "rivalry"
Don’t blame Reds fans for being haughty, the Ohio lottery has raised the stake to a whole new level. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20080516&content_id=2711145&vkey=pr_cin&fext=.jsp&c_id=cin First they take our money and now they make us uncivilized. Damn you lottery!

I was down there today
it was my second reds game first at Great American Ballpark. It was a beautiful day and a good game. I loved Dunn’s assist the best part is tehre was a red neck who was ragging on Dunn all game, despite his homerun and what not, and when the ball hit the wall he was like “You suck Dunn”, and Dunn got the assist and shut him up.
The best part of the day was the hillbilly next to me, he was talking about hot dogs, and said that the Reds used to put the saurkrut out with the other condoments but now keep it behind the counter for “security reasons”.
And after the game I kept a red neck in a pickup truck, who changed lanes about 5 times on second street, from cutting me off (which pissed them off because i drive an elantra and they drive a big ass pick up truck that should rule the world), and they threanted to fight me. It was a good day.
