In this case

the best bunt attempt was a bad bunt attempt

...

You shouldn’t hang me on a nail. My father hung me on a nail once… ONCE.

You shouldn’t have your sluggers bunting with the game on the line. Dusty had his sluggers bunting with the game on the line… TWICE!

Geez, what’s with this guy? He probably had to touch a hot stove more than once as a kid before he figured out not to. Hopefully the second time did the trick.

by Blue on May 17, 2008 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

fwiw, i dont think he was very attached to the idea

if he were, he would have kept the bunt on with one strike. i think he knows it’s “conventional baseball wisdom” to bunt in that situation no matter what, but you can kinda tell he doesnt agree with it. Hopefully he will trust his gut more next time

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

I hope you're right

about everything you said there.

by Blue on May 17, 2008 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

who's to say

the bunt attempt didn’t change the pitcher’s focus and cause him to throw that last pitch?

by Daedalus on May 17, 2008 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

in that case he could have pulled the bat back

and taken the first pitch for a ball, and not attempted to bunt thereafter. I don’t think Dusty was thinking that.

by Blue on May 17, 2008 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Well now fellas, c'mon now

Dusty is trying real hard. You know he really doesn’t like bunting, it just clogs up the bases. However, I think that he’s trying to think ‘outside the ‘clog’ a little bit. You like when Coach Narron pinch hit Casto for Hobbs….

Did Dusty really ask Dunn to bunt?

Is Dunn any good at bunting?

No one on our team is good at bunting

Well, Hopper’s good when he’s not injured, but mostly that’s because it’s all he does. I’m really amazed at how often this team is called on to bunt, and what little aptitude they show for it. Somebody needs to make an adjustment, and I’m pretty sure it’s easier for the manager and coaches to stop calling for bunts than it is for our hitters to become good at bunting.

Just watched the 9th on the archives

I liked Thom’s call. I think he gets too much of a bad reputation on this site but I like him. This probably makes him great by my standards.

Adam Dunn

I haven’t heard a lot about this subject lately, but what are the chances of the Reds signing Dunn next year?

by EJ on May 17, 2008 7:40 PM EDT reply actions

Not very high

Dunn isn’t a overly great player and the Reds already have young left handed bats. I suspect he will be let go and replaced with a right handed bat to compliment Bruce and Votto. It is the way of baseball.

Griffey has become useless.

by Johnnypronto on May 17, 2008 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Bob Castellini like him

and his semi-slow start should make him cheaper. So yea I think the Reds will resign him for another couple years, but not too long.

by buckeye22fox on May 17, 2008 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Thompson getting lit up tonight

A really bleak period for the Reds pitching prospects. Bailey imploding(for whatever reason) and Thompson starting to look adapted to in AA.

I wouldn’t mind if Homer was doing good. We would have plenty of depth on the major league rotation. Damn him.

by Johnnypronto on May 17, 2008 8:00 PM EDT reply actions

lit up?

my gametracker says he’s only given up 2 runs…

What do you mean, "blank slate"?

by boobs on May 17, 2008 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Roenicke

I haven’t heard much about him either. I thought he might be ready for the bullpen this year. Looks like Homer just need some more time before he’s ready to come up again.

by EJ on May 17, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

Better hope so

I said it on March 30th, Bruce and Bailey are the keys the Reds season. Bruce is doing fine. He is still growing and learning. A terrific talent which will give this offense a jolt come the summer stretch.

Homer, man? He makes it sound like he is holding back(far better than having a injury). That is fine, but the attitude level of improving himself as a quality all-around pitcher is lacking. Maybe this June he just starts throwing 94-98mph heat consistantly it will help his AAA production. But the lack of desire he has for the game is sad. I fear the Reds get rid of him and then he blows up into a monster which the Reds will still be a loser franchise made fun of because of it. Anybody else have that fear?

Roenicke has been of to a slow start in terms of consistant dominance. But I think he started off a bit slow last year to.

by Johnnypronto on May 17, 2008 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Since Wayne left the Reds don’t seem any more open about their plans, but I’m guessing they’ll bring up Bruce in June. I’m looking toward 2009, but if Bruce gets called up and Homer can perform, who knows?

by EJ on May 17, 2008 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

As long as the Reds hang around .500

Bruce will not be called up. Next May is when it will happen. Shitty but it is my hunch.

he’s coming up when the first of dunn or griffey is traded

Is he really that bad in CF?

but we have 3 other centerfielders on the roster

by boobs on May 17, 2008 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

No we don't

We have a super-sub. And Corey Patterson.

Actually, I wouldn’t mind Cherry getting a chance to prove he can play CF every day, but it looks like he’s already playing SS every day.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on May 17, 2008 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

if Patterson could hit .265 and bat eighth

steal about 30 bases I’d be ok with him playing every day. But I don’t think he can.

Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds

by Caleb on May 17, 2008 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't

He’s terrible in CF. I don’t know where he got his reputation for being good on defense, because he isn’t. Using BP’s “rate”...

PLAYER RATE
Hairston 101
Freel 100
Patterson 94

Some prefer Rate 2, which is adjusted for league, etc., but there’s not a big difference.

Average is 100. Patterson is bad. Unless Bruce is worse, I don’t see why they’re waiting for a corner spot to open up.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on May 17, 2008 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

He would be fine in CF

We would have plenty of candidates for late innings replacements.

by Johnnypronto on May 17, 2008 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Hate to bring it up

But there’s also the possibility of injuries. At any rate, we will definitely see Bruce in Cincinnati this season. My guess is shortly after the All-Star break (NL starter for the ASG: Edinson Volquez).

by Brendanukkah on May 18, 2008 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Man is Todd Coffey bad

I don’t get him either. Big arm, should be a good middle reliever at least, yet he struggles. This organization seems to run the roost on “troubled” pitchers that underpitch their talents.

by Johnnypronto on May 17, 2008 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

Well

Coffey, Rob Bell and Matt Belisle all suffer(ed) from the Brandon Larsen Quadruple A Virus.

by bobestes on May 17, 2008 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt Belisle at least has a excuse(bad back)

Coffey and Bailey don’t have any. They just pitch poorly.

by Johnnypronto on May 17, 2008 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

belisle has no excuse

he has “stuff”, he knows how to pitch. all I can guess is that he’s a total headcase and just plain doesn’t have the makeup to be a starting pitcher in the bigs.

by bobestes on May 17, 2008 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

his fastball does not move

i could probably hit it

Yeah

They pried him off of Patterson so he could finish on Dunner’s leg.

It missed clearing the stands by about that much. Dunn’s putting a “Kobayashi” stamp right next to his “Wickman” one on his truck.

well....

i’d be ok with trading him if the reds could procure decent comparable talent. aint gonna happen.

junya and patterson are hurting the ballclub, the big mistake is not bringing up Bruce NOW. the kid can play center for at least 2-3 seasons. Patterson is a nice defensive CF, but his stick is a wick.

Jocketty should make the call to bring up the best prospect in the entire minor leagues. dumbasses…..i almost miss dan obrien.

So, uh...

is this a bad time to ask if there’s any chance of Dunn batting higher than seventh any time soon?

by Gray on May 17, 2008 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

RBI opportunities

as someone (forget who) said in the game thread, the Reds’ 5-6-7 hitters are far more frightening than 1-2-3. So if we’re living in the zany-ass world where Votteaux and EEE are batting low and getting on base, might as well have Dunn get his RBIs by hitting behind them. Of course, hitting the same 3 as 2-3-4 make much much more sense, but will also never happen.

PS. In the evergoing search for a nickname for #19, I’m submitting Votteaux. French thing and all. Let me know how it works.

...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
