2008 - Matt Belisle 1-3 7.45 1.94 9 5

I don't mean to disrespect the Marlins because clearly their record is much better than the Reds, but based on their pitchers' numbers, I don't see how they've done it.  Miller, who was acquired in the Cabrera/Willis deal, still has yet to turn 23 (next week).  He got rocked in his first 3 outings, but since then has posted a much more respectable 4.15 ERA.  He doesn't strike out a lot of hitters, so hopefully the Reds will continue to be patient and get their hits.

The leash on Belisle should be short.  Very short.  Josh Fogg's got some pennies to count, but I'm sure he's itching to pitch after 10 days of rest.  It'd be nice to get a sweep, so Dusty better not sit with Belisle for too long.

The Reds are 6-4 over their last 10 games.  It's only the second time they've had a winning record over a 10-game stretch this season.  A win today will give them a 4-game win streak for the first time this season.  Just for fun, let's not be satisfied with a series win and try to piece together a serious winning streak here for a bit.

Belle Isle

I lived in Detroit for a while. Belle Isle is one of the true treasures of the city, yet few non-Detroiters (or race fans, because they held a couple of F1 and CART races there) know of it.

Often wrong, never uncertain.

by sidnancy on May 15, 2008 7:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah

I knew of it from when I lived in Ann Arbor, but I didn’t think any of the pictures were pretty enough to get across the idea of a beautiful island, which is what I was going for. I’m not sure most people would have gotten the actual Belle Isle reference – like you said no one knows about it. Then again, maybe nobody else got the original reference anyway.

You two are all over each other.

Reminds me… last night’s after PJ’s heroics, the wife and I queued up Brokeback Mountain. And now I’ve got a question: Why do hundreds of sheep need to be driven to the top of a Wyoming mountain? Was there no space available for grazing? In Wyoming? Here’s what I came up with— the sheep are driven up the mountain to where it’s cooler and their wool grows thicker than it would at sea level in the sumer. Yes? No? Anyone?

by Fat Vegas Alan on May 15, 2008 8:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Dude

I think you missed the point of the movie.

Please Note: I may be totally full of shit.

by jch24 on May 15, 2008 10:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No

It takes more land than you think you graze sheep. There’s not a lot of calories in grass. (Which is why Bush’s switchgrass idea isn’t going to fly, but that’s another story.)

There was a lot of conflict over rangeland out west. (Google sheep wars if you’re interested.)

Taking the animals up the mountain to graze is an old tradition. Like in Heidi. It’s land that’s not good for farming, and may not be accessible to cattle.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on May 15, 2008 10:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

switchgrass is still way better than corn.

because you don’t need tons of nitrogen fertilizer on it – which is one of the most energy intensive products we make.

Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.

by andromache on May 15, 2008 11:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, but...

...at least we make it. Fuel from switchgrass is still pretty much theoretical.

Not that I’m a fan of ethanol. But switchgrass is way overblown.

IMO, what many people don’t understand is if we grow something intensively, it’s going to requires fertilizers, pesticides, and possibly irrigation. Everything we grow once grew like a weed, without our help. It’s the way we grow crops – in monoculture, harvesting year after year – that makes them require all that energy.

If you let switchgrass grow like prairie grass, it dies where it’s grown, and its nutrients go back into the soil. If you graze animals on it, again, the nutrients go back into soil. But if you take it away and burn it in your car…you are going to have to put nutrients back into the soil, in the form of fertilizer.

The end of the world as we know it, will be when the Cincinnati Reds

Baseball Organization begins to act rationally and efficiently. When We have a balanced roster and a balanced manager. When the Reds again win back to back World Series AND when sMarty and clownboy, tHom and Gapper have all be mercifully retired. That Bubba is the the correct choice.

Our squad gets a mention at FJM.
Zach Rastall (Marinette, WI): Hi Joe you’re awesome. What should the Brew Crew do about there horredous relief pitching?

Joe Morgan: There’s not much they can do. They invested a lot of money in Eric Gagne, and if he doesn’t work his way out of his problems, it will be a disaster. It hough they should have re-signed Cordero, but they lost him to Cincinnati. They’ll have to live with that decision. Very few general managers will admit their mistakes. Gagne can turn it around, but who knows?

Here’s the thing, man:

No, actually, here’s the things:

They didn’t invest a lot of money in Gagne, relatively speaking. It’s one year, $10m. Now that’s obviously not cheap, especially for an homme who suces as mal as he does, but they can cut him if they want to and next year, it’s back to the drawing board (in a good way). Frankie Cordero, on the other hand, got $46m for four years from the dumbass Reds. He is 33 years old as of last Sunday, and he has walked 11 guys in 15 IP this year. The Reds are going to be paying this guy $10.5m when he is 36 and on the shelf with his eleventh TJ surgery. (Yeah—eleventh. A lot happens to Cordero in the next few years.) And you think the Brewers should have signed him? And you think they’re having a hard time living with the decision not to?

Gagne stinks, and he’s not their closer anymore. They took a risk on a short-term contract and it didn’t pay off. At least it’s not a hamstringingly bad 4 year deal for a mediocre 33 year-old.

Link.

by Fat Vegas Alan on May 15, 2008 9:00 PM EDT   0 recs

i read that

i kinda dont get all this talk from the outside about how the cordero deal will “hamstring” us. It’s only an issue if management isn’t willing to increase the payroll to win, and it seems as if Castellini is willing to spend more if it makes us better. Besides, as I’ve said before, it’s not my money.

It's a knee-jerk sabr reaction

to criticize any contract over two years for a reliever, and I agree it’s gotten old.

that many writers go overboard in hating the contract, but count me among those who thinks we’re 2 years removed from cursing the 20+ million still owed to him.

As boobs said, it’s not our money, but Castellini better not have the gall to cry poor when it comes to replacing everyday players.

From BaseballReference.com
GBs – Summed Games Back. This was developed by John Dewan of Acta Sports (who publishes a lot of really good baseball books, BTW). He introduced this in a Stat of the Week™. The idea is that you add up how far behind the team is for every team ahead of it in the standings. For example, say the Mets lead the NL EAST with the Braves one game back and the Phillies six back. The Braves are only one game back of the Mets, so GBs=1.0 for them. For the Phillies they are six back of the Mets and five back of the Braves, so their GBs=11.0. It probably isn’t a perfect measure of a team’s difficulty of getting into first place, but it is likely a better measure than just plain old GB. Note that for the wild card this becomes a bit of a mess, but in this calculation we exclude the current division leaders, to give you a number for just the teams in the current wild card race.

Basically, it means we’re fucked.
