There's video up now at Gameday

You can see Freel knee Janish in the nose during the post-game festivities. I think that’s what bloodied his nose.

i love that second photo

man, this is what this team needs – the young guys who want to be on the field to fire it up. the old guys are stale. they need the young uns to blow some life into them.

by Daedalus on May 15, 2008 12:38 AM EDT reply actions

yes they should

But I think we will see Homer first. Especially if Belisle has another crappy start. I wonder if they will move Matt to the bull pen or send him down?

Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds

by Caleb on May 15, 2008 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions

where does he fit in the bullpen?

I can’t really think of anyone to send down at the moment. Maybe Burton if he continues to struggle but I think Burton is a better option than Belisle. I would send Belisle down and call up Homer. Fogg is the long man, no reason to have two of those around. Remember when they had Kirk Saarloos and Victor Santos around?

Ross disagrees

According to Trent:

Baker put Cueto in to pinch run for Ross. Baker was going to put Edinson Volquez in, but Encarnacion told him Cueto is faster, so Baker sent him out to second and told him to just not get picked off. (“I’m faster than Cueto,” Ross said with mock seriousness after the game. “Me and Cueto on the right field line tomorrow. We’re going to race.”)

That seems to be the universal response when a pitcher is used as a pinch-runner. :-D

by BubbaFan on May 15, 2008 7:07 AM EDT up reply actions

This is funny to me.

Edwin told Dusty Cueto’s faster? I mean, I guess it makes sense that he wouldn’t know who his faster pitcher is, but this cracked me up.

So... 3 wins in a row

The question is, do we keep this going during the weekend or do we slip back into a losing streak? I don’t expect us to sweep again, but taking two series in a row would be a nice step forward.

Hi Cool God!

I never took you for a fair weather fan. The Reds win 3 in a row and suddenly you show up? And don’t give me that carrying me when there was only one set of footprints crap. Cool God, why did you abandon us in our time of need???

When there was one set of footprints

That was when Cool God had ducked out to get baked and play some Wii Mario Kart. Which is totally rad. Why are you always so hung up about baseball, man? Just chill, grab a Wii-l, and we’ll play this Speed Racer remix in the background. You wanna be Luigi. You can be Luigi.

I was there last night

Fun times until the 9th. Each time I’ve seen Cordero pitch in person, he has blown a save. (last year for the Brew Crew and now this)

Nice to see the rookie step up when it counted.

In other incidents, Bako hit a screaming foul ball that hit a little kid in the jaw. You could hear the crack from the other side of the bullpen. The kid stood stunned for a few moments but he knew he took a shot. He turned out to be o.k. in the end and even got the royal treatment from the GABP staff for the rest of the game. The section started a chant to get Bako to sign the ball… but I didn’t see anything come of it. ;)

You also can’t help but like Griffey. If you hadn’t heard of this incident, it’s classic stuff. Someone from our section called out to Griffey and asked if he had any pennies for us. That got Griff smiling. After hat he asked if it was a full truckload, and Griff turned around and said, “Nope. Just a trunk load.”

As said, fun times. :)

ryan braun signed an 8-year deal with the brewers

for… $45 million. Though it’s the largest contract in Brewers history, it’s really a coup for management. It’s less than $6 million a year for one of the best players in the national league. it buys out his remaining 2 years of pre-arb, three more years of arb (during which time he would have almost certainly gotten more than $18 million) and his first 4 years of free agency, when he could have likely made 2-3 times as much as he will now make for the Brewers.

Braun said the contract negotiations have been hanging over his head and led to his slow start.

“Anybody who says that contract negotiations aren’t a distraction is not telling you the truth,” he said. “It definitely comes into play, it definitely factors in and for me, it’s just great to have that out of the way and just be able to focus on baseball and know financially I’m secure for the rest of my life.”

I hope we pull this kind of deal very early in jay bruce’s mlb tenure.

Agree

With Longoria’s and Braun’s deals a market has been set for young, pre-arb stars at a very favorable level. I really hope the Reds take advantage. Jocketty has shown a willingness to buy out arb years for l/t value with the ‘04 Pujols contract, so there’s hope.

Watched the entire game yesterday.

Was tempted to leave the bar-gambling establishment after we hit 6 runs but stuck it out for some reason. It was really painful to watch the 9th but when the Marlin didn´t take the lead I had a good feeling that the game was still ours. Something about the Marlins being overly content with just tying the game. On the road, you gotta play for the win. I am only half serious here, obvioulsy they were trying to win it, but the fact that they only could tie it was crucial to the Reds chances. 3 run rally killer?

I think this Janish guy needs a nickname…

Eric Owens

I said Wednesday after the game that I was at a game when Eric Owens hit a walk off in his debut. According to Fay, Eric Owens was the last Red to do so in his debut – June 6, 1995. Wow! If I remember correctly, it was a hard groundball up the middle to score Larkin from second. Of course, I don’t have to remember because I can go to retrosheet or whoever posts those things and find out. But it’s late . . .
I was also at the game for Josh Footpenis’ first win, and extra innings’ affair.
