Wait'll you see what Adam Kennedy just did
It’ll make you feel a lot better about the batting-out-of-order thing.
He's extremely quick and good.
Okay, after the Griffey thing(s), Kennedy's isn't so funny anymore
Truth be told, it was only the third-funniest bobble of the night, after Cuddyer’s.
He's extremely quick and good.
But he considers it a mistake!!!

Seriously…...why not just bunt to third every time they do that until they quit? Surely teams wouldn’t do it if it meant an automatic man on base.

We have a really good, week long conversation
about how duhumanizing people based upon race is not okay, yet dehumanizing women still often goes unquestioned here.
This is more than about being PC, this is about keeping this community safe and comfortable for everybody here.

Question:
You raise a very valid point. Does it trouble you when we sometimes have celebrity “themes” in the threads? For instance, I kept posting Karen Allen pictures on Saturday, but I would like to think they wouldn’t be thought of as exploitive. I know BubbaFan raised an objection to the “cheesecake.” Is this something that other people feel strongly about?
by Brendanukkah on May 13, 2008 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't care
Nor do I care if pictures of scantily clad men are posted if that’s someone’s thing. I’d take offense more to attempting to create a “safe” online community since it’s impossible to do.
Please Note: I may be totally full of shit.
There is not a history
of women abusing, raping, exploiting, and controlling men and their bodies like there is a history of the contrary.
Perhaps respectful is a better word than safe? Do you object to having a respectful online community where everyone who is also willing to be respectful feels welcome to contribute?
I think it is also important to add that there is also a long history of resisting and organizing against this oppression as well. And it is from this history of organizing and resisting this specific oppression that I have learned some of the most important things I know.

I don't remember
Anyone posting pictures of women being abused or anyone sympathizing with people who are abusers of women. While it’s true that you can’t equate pictures of men & women, isn’t it also foolish to equate pictures of women posing of their own free will with a history of abuse, rape, exploitation, and control?
My point about making something “safe” is who draws the line and where? Everyone has different tolerance levels for everything. I leave that up to the admins, who in my experience have handled it nicely.
I think the members here are adult enough to speak up if they feel uncomfortable (it’s happened in the past) and people here ARE respectful of other’s feelings.
The internet doesn’t come in Nerf.
Please Note: I may be totally full of shit.
A racist picture,
say one of those classic pics of Little Sambo where he has jet black skin and oversized lips does not, in itself, show physical abuse. Yet, Little Sambo was part of a broader racist culture that did result in discrimination, exploitation, and brutal violence against people of color.
I believe Slyde said this about about the first time Battlekow came “bearing gifs” in the post game thread:
Let’s watch it on the pictures that are getting posted and linked to in the threads. I like boobs as much as the next guy, but let’s not forget that there are ladies and children that read this site as well. Either start posting some man meat for them, or reel it in on the boobage. :) Actually, I’m just afraid of opening pandora’s box and finding ourselves crossing that line a little too much. I’m not trying to reprimand anybody, just reminding you that exposing crolfer to that stuff might be a federal offense.
This is me saying I am uncomfortable.

You think Sambo is a fair comparison?
because I don’t. And I was serious, I won’t post anything that might be deemed offensive.
Please Note: I may be totally full of shit.
I think there are valid parallels.
I don’t think Verka was equating the two things at all, more akin to a reductio ad absurdam than a straight comparison.
I inferred sarcasm because “anything remotely offensive” seemed like hyperbole – and “I’m sorry that you are uncomfortable”, implies (to me) a certain emphasis, and a significant degree of blame, on ‘you’
But if you weren’t being sarcastic, then I certainly am sorry for my nastiness.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
I'm not here to offend
or make anyone uncomfortable, there are plenty of places on the internet I can do that if so inclined. I’m also not a misogynist or a racist or an asshole either, as some here can attest.
I still don’t think the Sambo comparison is fair, sorry. Apples & oranges are both fruits but they’re still, well, you get the idea. The “remotely offensive” part was a bit snarky, sorry.
I guess I tend to have thicker skin than most, and don’t take much of anything on the internet seriously. I also abhor institutional censorship in any form, I really believe we can self-police.
Please Note: I may be totally full of shit.
good lord
why is this an issue? JCH is right about this. He’s not trying to promote racism (i’m not even sure how the conversation got to that). This site is fun, and it has always been fun. If there is something that truly offends you, you can flag the post.
In the end, life and business are about human connections. And computers are about trying to murder you in a lake. And to me the choice is easy.

It was analogy.
Of arguable validity. But noone’s accusing jch of racism. I don’t think it’s a nonissue, but i’m certainly tired of it enough to not post about it anymore.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
Thought a little bit more about this conversation
and wanted to add a few clarifications.
Agreed, racism and sexism have many differences historically and today. I am not quite sure what “reducto ad absurdum” is but I appreciate droma’s support in saying that there is a valid parallel here.
I guess what I want to reiterate is that despite, the differences between the “apples and oranges” of racism and sexism, the fruit of the matter is that they both serve to produce certain subject positions that are part hierarchal power structures. No, Little Samba is not exactly the same as pictures of hot air balloon sized cleavage. There are many differences.
The similarity that I want to focus on is that both pictures invoke a particular type of subjectivity that is connected to a form of domination. The character of Little Samba produces and replicates the subject of the the dark skinned savage, ape like and inferior that invites, invokes, and justifies the “white” viewers discrimination and violence. Pictures of women’s cleavage produce and replicate the subject of the women as passive sexual object that invites, invokes, and justifies the “masculine” viewers gaze, his fantasies, and arguably his violation of her body.

On censorship.
I am totally with you here. I backed away from the word “safe” earlier because it did sound like I was asking for censorship in order to make this a “safe” space.
I think self-censorship is definitely the goal, both here and in the greater world. I think that is what we call having morals or ethics or using judgment.
It is not that I don’t want you to post “offensive” things on this blog. There is obviously not going to be an agreement on where to draw that line. What I would like us to do is think about what the things we say here, the pictures that we post, the references that we make, I would like us to think about what they do.
What I mean by this is when we, for example, post a picture of a women’s breasts, we should reflect on what that picture does to the people who see it, who they become in response to it, and the world that results from it. If you go through that reflection and you are okay with what your post does, go for it.
Other people, of course, then have the right to not be okay with what it does, but then we at least have a good framework to discuss why or why not we should allow those types of posts in our community.

I am often very troubled by my masculinity.
It is not that I can’t enjoy pictures of beautiful women, or get off on pictures like Battlekow’s porn-esque contributions to this site.
On the contrary, I know I can, and I have.
But I also know who I become when I objectify women, when I practice a version of sexuality that reduces women to the things. I become somebody I don’t want to be, I practice doing something I don’t want to do with the people I love in my life.
Then there is the whole thing how 1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males will be sexually assaulted by the age of 18. I am not saying that posting these pictures on RedReporter is directly causing sexul assault. I am saying that posting these pictures on RedReporter is continuing a culture of sexism that, in combination with all the other components of this culture in media, in education, in language, and our very identity categories, is leading to our current epedemic of sexual violence.
Tanzen!
by Verka Serduchka on May 13, 2008 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions
I really don't think that scantly dressed women causes sexual violence
I think the fact that in general men are stronger than women is a bigger cause of the increased sexual violence against women.
I think there is probably less sexual violence now than in times past. I think it is reported more and receives more media attention than it used to. If you look throughout history the abuse women received was much worse. The knights and other soldiers of medieval feudal systems looked at raping women as a fringe benifit of their jobs. I think women feel more comfortable reporting sexual crimes now than in the past because women are closer to being on equal footing in society.
That being said, I have a very very close friend and also a family member who has been the victim of rape. I take rape very very seriously and have no tolerance for rapist and firmly believe that rapist should be sent to prison for life. I feel that rapist cannot be rehibilitated.

Nor do I.
I think teaching boys and men to look at women in a certain way contributes to creating a culture where sexual violence happens.
Even if there were less sexual violence today than in the past that would not be a good reason to let the massive amount of sexual violence that is happening today continue unquestioned.
That said, I am doubtful that there is in fact less sexual violence. Take for example our own troops serving in the Mid-East today:
As of September this year, the Miles Foundation had received credible reports of rape or sexual assault (in the period August 2002 to August 2003) from 243 women serving in the US military in Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain and Afghanistan. An additional 431 instances of assault were reported elsewhere. No figures are available for the rape of male soldiers serving in Iraq, although campaigners say there are such cases. Meanwhile, the Miles Foundation says it has charted a sharp increase in reports of domestic violence among military families with soldiers returned from the war.
Unfortunately, I do not think a whole lot has changed between the connection between militarism, sexual assualt, and masculinity. Keep in mind that these are examples of our own male troops assaulting our own female troops. God knows what they are doing to civilins in the countries they are occupying.
If you check out the stats from the previous post you will see that “On average, from 1992-2000, only 31% of all rapes and sexual victimizations were reported to the police.” Whether women feel more comfortable than before, I don’t know, but they still would appear to feel uncomfortable reporting sexual assault more often than they feel comfortable.
I am really sorry to hear about your friend. The really scary thing is that in 7 out of 10 cases, rapist tend to know personally the target of thier assault. In other words, rapists are fathers, brothers, boyfriends, friends, colleagues, acquaintances. They are us, and that is why I speak out.

yep pretty cool
not many teams are 20 for 20 in save situations. oh wait.
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
The Angels
Have three times as many save opportunities as the Reds. Damn.
Please Note: I may be totally full of shit.
Never mind
I went by the saves leader like a moron. The Cardinals lead the majors with 26 save opps, the Reds are 6 for 6.

Dumb ESPN.com headline of the day
“IU thinks its sanctions in Sampson case enough”
No Shit, you mean they aren’t going to ask for stiffer penalties?

so Dusty says we don't have to worry about Patterson
because guys generally improve to their career numbers. His career OBP is .292, and his career AVG is .250 something. He says the Reds really need speed at the top of the lineup, and if he is moved down there will be too many left handed hitters in a row.

*Note this is not an endorsment of Dusty Baker.
Does he not realize that he can replace him with another left-hander?
Or if not that, how about
Kepp
Dunn
Griff (if he has to bat in the first 3)
EdE
Votto
BP
Patterson
Catcher
OMG, back-to-back lefties. My eyes! My eyes! I take it back! It’s horrible!

"if he has to bat in the first 3"
fuck griffey
bat him where is best for the team, not where he wants to bat
