Slyde Continues to do God's Work
Slyde, along with JinAZ and GregATL, contributed to another John Erardi piece in today's Enquirer. It's a little scattershot, but it's nice to see the "little things" mantra get a much-needed kick in the balls. They even give some time to the notion of hitting Dunn second. I can imagine Dusty spitting out his toothpick when he reads that.
Anyway, this probably should go under FanShots because I don't really have much else to say about it, but, as Montaigne once said, screw FanShots.

If Votto can bat 2nd
why not Dunn?

Over the past 3 years Dunn has had 153 AB from the 2 hole...
His OPS is a very respectable 1.042, including a .314 average, 12 HR, 31 RBI, 30 BB, and and OBP of .441.
In 2007 Dunn had 522 AB and drew 101 BB. Let’s move all those AB into the 2 spot and see some projected numbers:
49 HR
153 RBI
102 BB
I’m not exactly a math genius, so if my math is totally screwed up… I apologize and ask that this argument be totally thrown out… The RBI seem high… Anyway… Can anyone tell me WHY we aren’t trying him from the 2 spot?

I credit Erardi on this
He really wants to get new information out there, but it’s terribly hard to do it in such a fashion that is accessible to the Enquirer readership. He plans on this being a weekly thing, but at this point we’re still just trying to change the language of baseball talk. That’s the main reason why on base percentage is being emphasized so much. John feels like we need to hammer that home in order for it to settle in with the general audience. I agree with him.
So, don’t expect to see a lot of detailed analysis like you’d find here or on Justin’s blog. For one thing, there just isn’t enough space. But if we can get people to start thinking from a wider perspective, I think we’ll be successful. I never expect people to talk in numbers, but if they can understand that there is more than just BA/HR/RBI/SB to evaluate a hitter, then my pathetic life will be just a little less pathetic.
Plus, my mom says she’ll make some butterscotch cake after the 10th time I get my name in the paper and it’s not in the police blotter section.

JOHN ERARDI obviously does not know how to play the game the right way.
I, for one have, continually thought that Kepp should lead off. Love Ede at the 3 spot and if Donkey gets 50 more ABs for Cool God’s sake lets do it.
Kepp
Dunn
EdE
Votto
BP
Grif
Freel
Bako/Ross
Pitcher
Sure beats today’s approach.
However I don’t think that the rationale for keeping Jay Bruce down in AAA is strong enough. The guy is going to hit and hit for power no matter what level he’s at.. A few weeks with Adam and he’ll start getting the hang of taking a walk to two. He’s just too damn good not to be up and working on figuring out Major League pitching. Esp. now when this big club is going absolutely nowhere.
Eeyore has more fun than a Reds fan.
by Madville on May 11, 2008 10:11 PM EDT 0 recs
I don't think he'll be down there all season
but he’s 21 and has a skill that he clearly needs to work on. I don’t see any issue with letting him work on it against somewhat inferior pitching. And it’s not just the walks, it’s the balance of strikeouts to walks. If he weren’t striking out at such a high rate, I don’t think there would be as much concern. And I don’t think the Reds feel like he won’t be successful – clearly he’s a major talent. I think they just don’t want to rush him just for the sake of rushing him. I’d imagine strike zone judgment is a hard skill to build in the Majors when pitchers are consistently in the 90s with major movement on their pitches.

RE: FanShots
It seems like not a lot of people are checking out and/or commenting on that which occurs below the ‘Stat of the Day’.
I haven’t cleared this with the higher-ups but I am of the opinion that if you have something other than an autographed Todd Benzinger baseball that you want to share at Red Reporter, you should just go ahead and make it a full-on FanPost.
I think if FanShots start to become overrun with posts that are little more than quotes from somewhere within the MLB universe or links to FJM or cool pictures, maybe we’ll have to revisit the FanGuideLines and FanByLaws. But until then… FanShots are for sissies.

What is the relationship like between
John and Paul. You all seem to have called out Paul for his insistance on the importance of the W/L record. Just wondering if John and Paul get along, and what their work relationship is like.
(And yes, this is a Beatles trivia question. The W/L record was a collection of b-sides that never saw production)

I went to Red Rocks while I was in Denver, a couple weeks ago
No music, but there were free desserts and booze, so I was okay. The people of Denver wouldn’t shut up about how great a venue it is—but they probably have a point. Enjoy!

I thought you were still in Austin
I would have looked you up. Denver seemed kind of like a glorified Easton Town Centre (not sure if you’ll get that reference; depends on how long it’s been since you’ve been back in Ohio). I loved the dryness of the air, although if I stayed for another day, I probably would have started getting nosebleeds. Oh, and there was a pretty big snowstorm on May 1. That seems to be pushing things.
But, uh, hope you dig it.

Nice place to visit, but not real sure about living there. Too much smog, for one thing. And the weather is WAY freaky.

Honestly, I have no idea
They definitely come at it from different perspectives. Back in March when Erardi put together the spread for why there is hope for this season, Doc had an article on the front page of the sports section of the same issue basically saying that stats are worthless. So you can tell that they are working with a different belief system. But as for whether or not they talk over punch at the office Christmas party? No idea. I’ve never actually met either person.
