Game 37 Thread: Reds at Mets

Cincinnati Reds @ New York Mets

Next Game

Cincinnati Reds
@ New York Mets

Saturday, May 10, 2008, 7:30 PM EDT
Shea Stadium

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Bronson Arroyo 1-4 8.63 1.96 29 13

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2008 - Mike Pelfrey 2-2 5.27 1.92 11 14

Not to get all John Mayer on you here, but I said what I needed to say about Pelfrey yesterday.  The offense needs to get their pitch and let him cause his own trouble.

And now, let us pray...

[drops to knees, clutches hands, and closes eyes]

Please be the good Arroyo tonight.  Please be the good Arroyo tonight.  Please be the good Arroyo tonight.  Please be the good Arroyo tonight.

Good Arroyo, Good Dunn...

No Votto at all, bad or good.

indiana jones is on USA network

temple of doom is on now. raiders is on at 8:30. if badroyo shows up, i think i’ll watch indy. i don’t think i can bear to watch two pathetic starting performances in one day.

Hmm

Sounds like a perfectly good excuse to have Karen Allen pictures in the thread.

Encarnacion batting cleanup

He’s earned it. Let’s hope he has a good night tonight, so that we can move Phillips out of the cleanup role.

Stop bunting too, Dustbag.

Freel sees seven pitches, then hits a double

Take not, Patterson. That’s the way a leadoff hitter does it.

And how ‘bout Freel? He’s been awesome lately. I’d pretty much written him off, so it’s great to see him show me how I was wrong.

by Brendanukkah on May 10, 2008 7:33 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hmm

why does Votto need a seat? i mean, the kid is 24, hitting like he’s 10 feet tall, and figures be both of those things for at least a few more months. what gives?

Nope, not too gay

Well, Brad Pitt’s hair and pout is a little… Brad Pitt, but Eric Bana is all man. The fighting is really well done, and the acting ain’t bad. Brad Pitt really turns Achilles into a prick, but when they’re fighting, you can see that there’s no one better in the world.

Well, that bunt sure was key.

With Farney on 2nd with a leadoff double, they bunt him to third, then Jr. hits a 9-iron to left that would probably have scored him from first, if he had a running start.

Way to go, Dustbag.

And Gary Majewski was lights-out. In the words of Jim Kelch, he’s like a different pitcher.

On the bright side, Janish and Bruce homered. Andy Phillips is 2 for 5 (so far), with a 2-RBI double. Which means his hitting streak is alive. It’s at 13 now, and the longest active streak in the IL.

Speaking of Griffey

What do people think his plans are? I think he’s going to stay for this season (by nixing all trades unless someone wants to vest his option for next year at $16 million), and then renegotiating with the Reds for next year and maybe the one after. Just a hunch. I really can’t see him just walking away without telling everyone, or botching it like Larkin did.

by Brian B on May 10, 2008 9:10 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Do you think he'll renegotiate?

He already deferred a ton of his contract. And he doesn’t seem to have a great relationship with the front office.

by Brendanukkah on May 10, 2008 9:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't think his relationship with the front office is bad either. It's just nonexistent (as far as we know)

All things being equal, the Reds will pay him the $4 million and it’s done. Then what’s Griffey going to do? Play for someone else? Where’s he going to go? Seattle? I guess, but he doesn’t know anyone there but maybe a few beat writers (who never treated him well).

If he’s not ready to hang it up after this season, I see him signing with the Reds for one or two more year for a marginal amount over the $4 million he’s guaranteed if the Reds buy him out.

by Brian B on May 10, 2008 9:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why would he come back to the Reds for anything less than $16M?

I get the feeling that if another team didn’t pick him up, he wouldn’t have too many qualms about calling it a career. I just don’t think he’d give us a discount again. If the Reds want him on the team next year, it’s only going to happen if they pick up the option.

by Brendanukkah on May 10, 2008 9:20 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Right

He might sign for less somewhere else, if some either team wants him. I don’t think he’ll sign for less here.

i hope he stays too

Dunn has hurt this team this season!

Clearly there’s a contingent here - getting smaller and smaller with each week - that loves Dunn. I thought JD’s rant about how bad this team is was funny in that he chose to not even mention Adam Dunn’s poor performance. He singled out everyone else.

Now—that comment will get the little gang going and be pounced on with insanity (see my recent post on the racism commentary). But that’s life at RedReporter.

yeah id agree with that

patterson hits .203 with 4 hrs and everyone calls him horrible, dunn hits .213 with 5 hrs and no one says a thing. Although i will admit dunn has a better track record, and thats probably the main reason

2nd worst rec in the nat’l league. There’s more than 1 problem…

Dunn’s play so far has been pretty indefensible. Especially since he makes more than almost anyone else on the team.

by cokane on May 10, 2008 9:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Plus

Dunn’s defense is horrible. He has no speed on the bases. He walks and hits home runs. Boston can pay a guy like that $13 million. NY can. The Cubs would.

The Reds can’t build their future with Bruce, Votto, Phillips, Bailey, Cueto and Volquez—and also pay a lumbering outfielder who has no speed and is horrble defensively $13 million.

Don’t argue your point with me. Try to convince Walt Jocketty that he ought to do that.
