I miss Josh Hamilton.
Now, don't get me wrong here, Volquez has been absolutely tremendous. I think he's surpassed any expectations that anyone has had for him, and he's shown that he can be a pretty badass pitcher even without great control. But I miss Josh Hamilton. I miss rooting for him, sure, but I really miss him on the field. While we continue to enjoy the fine "contributions" of Corey Patterson, Josh Hamilton has been perhaps the most valuable player in the AL so far.
His April stats? .330/.379/.591. 6 homers, 1 triple, 10 doubles, 16 runs, and a major league leading (by six!) 32 RBIs (Encarnacion and Griffey are tied for the Reds lead with 15). 11 walks, and just 13 strikeouts. And he's hitting .346 against lefties and has played in every single Rangers game so far. The only area that he hasn't been spectacular? Well, he only has one assist so far, but I suspect that might have something to do with nobody running on him.
I appreciate what Volquez has done, but I can't help but be really sad that we're missing what Hammy is doing. We all saw the insane amount of talent he had. This isn't a hot month, this is Josh Hamilton. Surely I can't be alone in missing him?

Agreed
I have often thought that I wish we could have offered someone other than Hamilton. I would have been happier to offer Votto or even Edwin Encarnacion (although I like how he’s playing right now). Hamilton earned my respect and became my favorite Red last year. Both clubs have benefitted from this trade but, again, I wish we could have sent some other players instead.

Well that didn't work exactly right.
DJ – Cinci: Is Edinson Volquez for real? Would you rather have him than Hamilton?
Keith Law No, I’d much rather have Hamilton. Volquez has gotten by on stuff, but he doesn’t throw enough strikes and I’m still skeptical about his lack of a good breaking ball.

I'd much rather have Bruce and Volquez
I know it wasn’t an either/or with Hamilton/Bruce, but I’m still not convinced that Hamilton will be healthy for a long time. I would have liked to keep him on the Reds, but I’m satisfied with Volquez’s #3 or higher potential as a pitcher. And I think over the long run, Bruce will be a better player than Hamilton.

I would have been happier with both Bruce and Hamilton, but you gotta get pitching from somewhere, and Hamilton was probably the best option to deal.

It really makes me wonder if the O’s are kicking themselves for not taking Hamilton + whatever else for Bedard. Though I’m glad they didn’t because Bedard has been bad and EV has looked great.

I wouldn't say Bedard has been bad: 2-0, 2.04 ERA, 7.1 K/9, 6.1 BB/9
He’s been hurt though and missed a couple of starts. At this point, I’d still take Bedard as he has a much better track record over time. But I’m more than pleased with what we’ve seen from Volquez.

Better
I’m not sure he’s going to be better. Hamilton is the most talented player to come into the league since A-Rod, and he was more physically gifted than A-Rod. He’s not quite the player he was when he was drafted for obvious reason, but he’s close. I’d take him over Bruce during the next 6 years all day everyday. He has more power, has shown the ability to hit for more power, plays a similar if not better CF and has by far a better arm. There is nothing he doesn’t do better than Bruce. In fact, he is now what Bruce projects to be.
That said, the deal doesn’t look bad now, and Volquez looks for real. You can get by with a fastball/change combo. Ask James Shields and his fastball is not in Volquez league (although his change is better ans so is his command).

My reasoning is that I don't believe Hamilton will stay healthy
And that’s partly because I can’t believe that he got injured in the on-deck circle last year. He seems fragile to me.
I realize that Hamilton is a special player, but I believe Bruce is too. I don’t believe Bruce would come up and do what Hamilton has been doing, but I do believe by the time he is 24 or 25, he’ll be as good and still just moving into his prime. That’s why I think he’s a better option at this point (again, not that it was an either/or thing).
And it’s good to see you back. It’s been a long time since you posted here. Have you become a big time Rays fan now, you front runner? :)

Yeah, I'm from Tampa
I grew up a Reds fan because my Dad loved Johnny Bench. I became a Rays fan around 04/05 for various reasons. One, I started following the minors around that time, Barry Larkin, who’s my favorite player retired, and the Rays were on TV all the time, while I couldn’t ever see Reds games unless they played the Braves or Cubs, or opening day.
And I can buy injury as a legit reason for being scared of Hammy. Even Pre-drugs he got hurt pretty regularly.
And this line:
“has shown the ability to hit for more power”
Is supposed to read, “has shown the ability to hit for a high Average” I talked about power the previous sentence.
By the way, this blog has absolutely blown up since I stopped posting regularly. You guys are doing an awesome job! I remember posting with 40 comments in a gamethread.

More from the same chat
Frankin(Beans): Refering to your answer on Hamilton vs. Volquez…Isn’t it much harder to find quality pitching esp. in a place like Cincy where free agent pitchers will most likely avoid.
Law Cordero didn’t avoid it. I’d rather have the superstar CF than a #2 starter (and that’s generous to EV), and the attrition risk on pitchers makes it even clearer.

im miss him badly, while we did nee the pitching, we really could have used his 27 rbi’s and his over .300 BA. I still dont know if i would have traded hamilton, while voltron is a stud, i still dont know if you trade away the 5 tool player of hamilton. I wish we could have traded dunn for him (probably wasnt even possible) but an OF of bruce/hamilton/griffey would look amazing. I hope hamilton gets a huge ovation when he returns to play in Cincy. I also hope maybe someday we can get him back.

Just a note
His 27 32 RBIs have come with 99 runners on base. Through my quick glancing, EdE and BP are tied with 77 runners on base for the most on the Reds. That won’t likely get them to Hamilton’s 32 RBI, but Hamilton has had a shitload more opportunities to drive in runs than anyone on the Reds.

Hamilton
From FanGraphs:
Season Team O-Swing% Z-Swing% Swing% O-Contact% Z-Contact% Contact% Zone% 2007 Reds 26.89 % 76.73 % 51.21 % 54.39 % 85.16 % 76.89 % 48.79 % 2008 Rangers 31.25 % 83.49 % 55.75 % 62.67 % 89.27 % 81.35 % 46.90 %
Two things I see, he’s swing a lot more and he’s making a lot more contact. Only 13% of his strikes have been looking this year, compared to 19% last year. And his swinging strikes are down even more as well (the difference appears to be that he is fouling more pitches off and putting more in play).
As with all of the players, and I probably didn’t say this in my main post, this is a small sample and the numbers could drift back to their “norms” over time. Hamilton is obviously seeing the ball well so far. If he starts to slump, I would suspect that he’ll be less aggressive. But when you are hitting just about everything that is thrown up there, why stop swinging?

Not much attention has been paid to this, because it’s not a big deal for most sports. (Football, cycling, weightlifting, etc.) However…it’s a big honkin’ deal for a baseball player.

I think the talk of Hamilton drinking was bullshit
This is the one thing about the internet, not to sound like that jack-ass on HBO, but anyone can write anything. I can say that Josh Hamilton egged my house, fucked my mother and girlfriend, and Brendwhatevers mom, and shot my father in the face, and eat my Beagle and stepped on my cats, and destroyed my text books. Well maybe not that much, but I think Hamilton is clean. I also think that with Pappa Narron with him he has somebody to keep him out of bars.
According to Redusanweep Freel was giving speed to the top of the lineup.

but it isn't a good idea for a recovering drug addict to drink
because drinking increases the likely hood of making bad decisions, plus I am guessing he drank heavily before he started the hard stuff, you don’t just do coke one day (at least normally). So if he starts drinking it may increase his craving for coke.

But there are some people who think alcoholics can learn to drink moderately. I wasn’t sure if he gave up booze or not.
One thing that struck me is that all the reports about his supposed drinking were remarkably similar. The Reds were out of town, and he was in a bar or club with some of his teammates. Could tie in with what Cannon said about Freel above.

Hamilton
Hamilton had a great start last year, too.
But then he got injured a bunch of times.
Production don’t mean shit if you can’t get on the field.

by bobestes on May 1, 2008 5:56 PM EDT 0 recs
Don't forget...
The Narron Factor. Johnny Narron was gone once Jerry got canned. Johnny is a necessary part of Hamilton’s stability, to the extent that he had to watch Transformers with Hamilton three times in a row.
That was a detail that led me to believe that without Johnny Narron, Hamilton might relapse. Prior to getting that little bit of color, it had not dawned on me 100% how a cocaine addiction really never “turns off.” I think I kind of had a sense, but that little detail really drove it home for me.
As a result, I think the trade was good for both sides. Because Johnny Narron would not have stayed with the Reds, Hamilton was significantly more risky and therefore significantly less valuable to the Reds than to a team to which Johnny could go as a “special assistant”/babysitter.
I miss Josh Hamilton too, but I think the Josh Hamilton I miss is the one that was playing for Jerry Narron. We would have gotten something different this year because of the management change.
If the alternative was trading Jay Bruce for EV, I would much rather have the package of Dustbag, Jay Bruce and EV than the package of Jerry Morron, Hamilton and EV.
Even without Bruce, I would rather have the package of Dustbag and EV than the package of Jerry Morron and Hamilton.
At least it wasn't Grady Little.
by Paul Householder on May 1, 2008 8:49 PM EDT 0 recs
Good point
It was probably Narron’s firing that sealed Hamilton’s fate.
Hamilton was reportedly quite upset when Jerry was fired, and so was Johnny.
Hamilton spoke to the press, warning that the Reds better not fire Johnny – that he and Johnny were a package deal, not just for one year, but for a lot of years.
Then they fired Johnny when the season was over, and I kinda figured Hamilton was on the block.

Not only did they hire Johnny
They apparently consulted at length with the Narrons before agreeing to the trade. They may have hired Johnny before they agreed to take Hamilton.
Johnny has basically the same job he had with the Reds. He says he’s there for the whole team, but everyone knows he’s really Hamilton’s minder. (According to Fay, that was something of an issue in the clubhouse last year – the “special treatment” Hamilton got.)

It's not surprising.
A lot of young lefties struggle against lefty pitchers when they first hit the majors before they figure it out and start to hit them close to how they hit righties. Everything about Josh Hamilton screams that he picks things up quite a bit faster than the average baseball player, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s already figured out how to hit lefties well. The guy is a freak, and will be one of the five best players in baseball over the next five years.
