Reds lose to Brewers, post-game/open thread
Our lack of righties on the bench is really gnawing at me. Phillips should be up. Helms should be here. Something. Hopper for Votto is not a move I ever want to see again. At least Johnny Quest was bonkers.
Down on the farm, Homer threw 5 2/3 shutout innings and got the win. (His ERA is 0.71.) The Sarasota Reds beat Detroit's big-money prospect from last year's draft, Rick Porcello. And Todd Frazier had two homers and Brandon Waring added another as Dayton beat Fort Wayne.
Up in Cincinnati, I'm ready for our bats to wake up anytime.
Also, don't forget to try your hand at our BaseballReference page motto contest.

Bako continues to hit. But where's the stolen bases I saw in spring training? ;-)

The pitching has been real good but...
Two of are middle of the line up hitters have been close to non existent!
Dunn {.130, .375} 0HRs!!!! I'm not really worried because it has only been 8 games.
Edwin {.083 .333} he does have a "Clutch Hit" though
and the Reds have been awful in getting on base in general! {9th in the NL}

Also...
When Jeff K and Corey Patterson are leading your team in SLG% that usually is a signal that your offense is just bad or is not starting the season off well.

I wouldn't mind seeing Dusty switch the lineup a bit
Move EdE and Dunn up in front of some of the guys that are hitting. Both are still getting on base (relative to their other value), but they are coming up with men on base and not producing right now. Maybe to take a little pressure off of them, move them up in the order and tell them to just keep getting on base until they find their rhythm. I know it won't happen, but it's something I'd like to see.
I do think Dunn is close though. He hit the ball hard twice last night before the Brewers stopped pitching to him.
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
I think Dunn played his game last night.
So if he plays his game again and again over the next three days, he'll hit one of his 40.

FWIW
In the post strike era, the offense has averaged 4.65 runs each year over the first 8 games and have only scored fewer than 32 runs in 2 seasons (1998, 2004). Then again, they've only scored significantly more than 32 twice (1996 - 45, 2006 - 52).
On the positive side, the pitching staff has only allowed fewer than 32 runs over the first 8 games twice in that span (2004 - 24, 2007 - 27). Of course, both of those teams finished 2nd to last in RA/G at the end of the season. So, there's that. But neither of those teams had Johnny Quest and The Wagon!
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
not bad.
perhaps Homer can make a miraculous comeback and be a prospect again after failing miserably and falling off the radar. Somewhat like the story of Jay Bruce.

Might be useful if there's an injury in the outfield. He's no Corey Patterson, but...
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
This is probably premature
But what would we think of a midseason trade of B. Arroyo if he is pitching fairly well. He is set to eat a lot of payroll for the next few years, and if Homer or Belisle is dealing in AAA, and johnny and the wagon are staying true to form, i think he is expendable as long as we get value in return, possibly a catcher?
If redundant, sorry. But what do we think?
Worse lately: Being a Bengals fan or Being a Reds fan?
I think it's premature
We really need to know more about all of the players involved before such a deal is discussed. Plus, it could be argued that the money shouldn't be an issue with Bronson since the remainder of the rotation will be cheap. If Arroyo is a league average pitcher, they can pay him big while they get production from the youngsters at minimum wage.
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
Yeah, but....
Message board discussions with only limited information are some of the most entertaining. Why would you want to limit that?
I say we trade Bronson for Barry Bonds who, by midsummer will have signed with the Florida Marlins and have hit 20 home runs in part due to a new non-detectable steroid coursing through his veins.
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!
I agree in principle
but if the youngsters are pitching well and krivsky can swing a deal for a catcher or solid prospects, i think it would make some sense. Why pay Bronson when we can use the money elsewhere and get the same pitching production from someone who is making 50% less. I also realize that his rock star qualities will have to be made up, but i heard that Bako plays a mean harmonica
Worse lately: Being a Bengals fan or Being a Reds fan?
I'm not sure we can get the same production as Arroyo at 50% less cost.
Pitchers like Arroyo don't grow on trees. Or maybe they do. I don't go outside much, so I can't say for sure.
Over the last 4 seasons (2004-2007), with a minimum of 600 IP, Bronson ranks 20th in ERA+. I haven't examined every player, but I'm pretty sure every active player in front of him will make a similar scale as Bronson next season, if not considerably more. Obviously the query pretty much eliminates some of the good young arms out there, but it's not like those guys are available anyway. I think the Reds would have a hard time putting up a rotation better than Harang, Arroyo, Cueto, Volquez, and Bailey next season with spending some serious cash.
What I'm trying to say is that Arroyo is efficient money to spend. The less efficient contract is Cordero. If we're looking to dump a contract, I'd start there. Not that I'm saying that's what I want to do, but I think freeing up money is not a good enough reason to trade Arroyo.
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
a similar rotation
harang, cueto, belisle, volquez, bailey. i know a lot of people around here aren't real bullish on belisle, but i think that guy still has no. 3 potential. His strikeout rate wasnt bad last year (6.4 per 9) and his walk rate was terrific (2.2). Those numbers were both improvements over the previous two years (especially walks), but he suffered from a .336 BABIP. Arroyo's K/9 rate (6.7) and BB/9 (2.7) are pretty similar.
You know all that, I'm sure. Did you know that BPro projects him to have a 4.51 ERA this season, compared with a 4.37 for Arroyo? Also, he's three years younger and threw a near-perfect game the other day in Sarasota. Just sayin.
Marty may have a shirt on, but Billy Beane just ripped his off and is squeezing his nipples. - Brendan's ukkah
I'm a Belisle supporter
and I believe he can be a good starter for most of the reasons that you state, but until he can prove that he won't crap all over himself with men on base, I'm not ready to replace Arroyo with him.
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
is there a precedent for this?
are there any cases of guys having really good stuff until they get to the stretch, and then they fall apart? Can that possibly be career-threatening? Are there specialists for that type of thing? It's seems like such a flukey thing that it should be easily fixed.
Marty may have a shirt on, but Billy Beane just ripped his off and is squeezing his nipples. - Brendan's ukkah
I think in general, pitchers are worse from the stretch
Over the last couple seasons, pitchers have allowed about 30-40 points more in OPS with men on base than with them empty. That's not a clear breakdown of when they're in the stretch, but it's a decent estimate. Belisle's difference over his career is .092. Last season it was nearly 200 points difference. That's probably more extreme that we would normally expect from him, but until he proves it, I'm not ready to dump Arroyo. That's all I'm saying.
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
but you're willing to watch belisle shit all over himself

are pitchers worse from the stretch
or is it when they are pitching from the stretch that they are worse? In a game where the pitcher is frequantly pitching from the stretch he is allowing a lot of baserunners to begin with. So maybe that number isn't a very good measuring stick becuase if ia pitcher is pitching out of the stretch a lot he just doesn't have his best stuf at the period in time.
But pitchers have to feel they have better stuff from the windup, or why wouldn't they pitch from the stretch all the time?
I only pitched a couple of little league innings when other kids were sick, why don't pitchers pitch exclusivily from the stretch. The mechanics of pitching from the stretch seem to be much simpler. Part of the art of pitching (according to Chris Welsh) is to beable to repeat a delivery, wouldn't that be either for 2 reasons; A-less movement from the stretch? B-Always the same thing, and the pitcher doesn't have to work on two delivieres.
I feel like that isn't very clear I hope you understand what I am trying to say.

I'm not certain
but I'm pretty sure you can throw harder from the windup since it's easier to build momentum.
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
A minor factor
With a runner on first the 1B has to play closer to the bag, creating a larger hole in the infield for the hitter to exploit. Unless the 1B is Prince Fielder circa yesterday more groundballs are going to find their way to the outfield.

yeah
I've been a little too definitive in my talkings on the subject since I haven't really studied it. There are probably a thousand reasons why it is the way it is, but in Belisle's case I'm going to blame him because that was my initial stance and a good arguer doesn't budge.
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
Oh and
are pitchers worse from the stretch or is it when they are pitching from the stretch that they are worse?
yes?
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
One serious follow up to that
if a pitcher is bad in the stretch because he is a bad pitcher, then he is going to be bad without men on base too. Otherwise, he's not letting men on base.
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
Probably physical and mental
As you said, you lose the momentum of the wind-up, but also you have the distraction of base-runners and the pressure of "no room for error". When no one is on base, you don't have to be as perfect because a walk or a basehit doesn't hurt you as much.
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!

Have you ever watched a game, or do you just sit in your sensory deprivation chambers and feel emotions about baseball?
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
You joke, but I've done extensive research
With a runner on first base, pitchers tend to have feelings of anxiety
With a runner on second base, pitchers tend to have feelings of self-doubt, bordering on depression.
With a runner on third base, pitchers begin to actually lose touch with reality which can often lead to erratic and even violent behavior.
When the bases are empty, they feel safe, happy and calm.
It will all be in my next book.

come on now
justin actually has a good point along the lines of correlation not equaling causation. When guys pitch worse, they put runners on base. Pitching poorly is a cause of pitching poorly from the stretch and being in the stretch in the first place.
i don;t think it explains belisle's 187-point split, but it's not a bad point.
Marty may have a shirt on, but Billy Beane just ripped his off and is squeezing his nipples. - Brendan's ukkah
Yeah...
There is a selection problem. The same pitcher may tend not to let men get on base when he's pitching better. Hence, lower OPS with no men on base. This probably has a lot to do with the general split, but Belisle's is still huge relative to that.
selection bias is true
but it does go both ways in that, you can't have men on base until you allow them on base. Then again, once they get on base, you may be more likely to have more at bats with them on base than not. But even the best pitchers allow a runner per inning, so it's not like they totally avoid base runners all together.
My point: I oversimplified, definitely. But I'm still right. :)

So Many Gamethreads...
... and so many fly ball outs. 1 of which flew just a little too far.
"Never drink a beer from a Brewer with a gay picnic area."
really?
That's your take away on Cueto? The flyballs? Not the 18 strikeouts. Not the 0 walks in 13 innings. Not the 6 hits in 2 starts. You only remember the 7 flyballs from last night?
WHY SHOULD I CHANGE IT? HE'S THE ONE WHO SUCKS!
Yeah, Actually
Don't get me wrong, the 18 K's are nice. But pitching always seems to be a bit more "sharp" in the beginning of the season. I'm sure there's statistical data to prove me wrong, but it's just my feeling... and when I "feel" the batters catch up, I worry that those flyballs are going to start going a lot farther.
Don't mistake my concern for anti-Cueto sentiment: I'm as geeked as anyone at his emergence, and really hope he'll develop into the solid pitcher we need. I just think there's a long way to go despite the historic start, especially given the fact that they had to pay for GABP on a per-square-foot-of-playable-field basis, and it's small. Yes, flyball outs are better than groundball hits (ahem, Mr. Weathers?). But when those flyballs come at bad times (wind blowing out in Wrigley, etc.) you can end up with a really bad situation.
That being said, he gave us a SHOT to win last night, which is more than we can say about some other Reds Pitchers we've known and suffered through.
"Never drink a beer from a Brewer with a gay picnic area."
Cueto makes the Dominican headlines again.
First, I just read through the threads from last night. Good stuff ladies and gentlemen. The music theme was a hit, pun intended, and very fun to read. I regret my late arrival. I will add this though:
Hey, Buffalo Bill, who do you kill?
Second, JC superstar made the front page of the Listin Diaro's sports page this morning. The headline read "Cueto ponche ocho y sale sin decisión" (Cueto strikes out eight and leaves without a decision). Nothing really too excting about the article, but , and I will say it once more, it is thrilling to see the Reds being noticed here.
Again, It was really trippy, and quite amazing, to see the the FSN Ohio broadcast last night projected on a big screen out front of my neighborhood colmado as people gathered around in plastic chairs listening to bachata and sharing big bottles of presidente light in little plastic cups.
Finally, in further Dominican news, today I am home from work because of a national general strike. The idea is to stop the country and demand a higher minimum wage and lower transportation costs. The intentions are well meaning, but using the general strike as a tool for social change is a bit limited and shortsighted. I say this for a couple of reasons: 1) The strike is aimed at causing the government to make changes that it doesn't have the freedom to make. Raising wages and lowering transportations costs effect profit margins, when profit margins are effected corporations tend to leave for greener pastures, and when corporations leave places where economies are dependent on them, economies crash. 2) The strikes is a limited tool for social change because it only stops the current system and does not in itself work to organize an alternative that could function better. For this reason, as a high school teacher I am enjoying my day off, but as an organizer I am not much in favor of what is happening today.

At least the Reds aren't the Tigers
0-7 to start the season for the 3rd time since 2002. Of course, this team had different expectations than either of the previous teams. They are also the 22nd team since 1901 to start out 0-7. Only two of the previous 21 finished the season with a winning record (1983 HOU- 85-77 and 1980 ATL 81-80). Nine of the previous teams finished with 100+ losses.
Playoffs? Don't talk about playoffs. Are you kidding me? I just hope we can win a game.
