I bet there are people reading thinking this is typical RR negativity, as Marty is an institution an all. I just want to elaborate. Slyde said it really well the other day that Marty should be somewhat excited about a new, promising season, but instead he's already on certain players' cases. Today he talked about how Joey Votto has not done any favors for himself so far. It's true, but the utter disdain for the kid and glee at his failure in Marty's voice was striking.

I really wonder how much Marty loves baseball anymore. Maybe it's been the Reds failings. Maybe it was the "retirement" and then passing of Joe. The past few years he's only brightened up when it comes to weird off-topic things, trivia and whatnot. This basketball new slang conversation has it all. It's not related to the game and it's cranky in a in-my-days-men-were-men kind of way.

Hopefully the Reds start putting together a great season and Marty gets back to simply calling a fantastic game as he's capable of.

Is Marty different?

I don't remember the negativity and distractions this early in a season before. Its entertaining in July and out of it by 8 games. I just wish he'd give the score out as much as he gives the other stuff. Has he gotten worse about the distractions?

I don't know when it started but I can say that he's done this stuff very early in the season for a few years now.

It's the primary reason that I've tried to find ways to not listen to him.

Regarding Menace's "hope".. It's not gonna happen. I will say that evidently Marty is willing to actually do his job when the game is close in the ninth inning. And you're right, Menace. When he does do his job he's very good at his job.

And that's what's disappointing about it

We all have these memories of what put Marty in the Hall of Fame. But he's gone away from that so much the last few seasons that it's almost impossible for me to enjoy listening.

The thing that I hate most is that about half of what he says is a dig at one player or another. Even when he's complimenting a player, it usually at the expense of another player - "so and so did what whats-his-face couldn't". I used to love Marty and not care for Joe's style that much, but hearing Marty over the last couple of seasons makes me miss Joe a lot.
