Game 7 Thread: Reds vs. Phillies
Philadelphia @ Cincinnati
Reuters (Hamels), Al Behrman/AP (Arroyo)
|
|
|
In two starts (14 innings) Hamels has allowed one run against the Reds. That includes his major league debut, in which he allowed one hit in five innings and, oh yeah, the time he struck out 15 in a complete game. The Phillies also turned a triple play that day. That was awesome.
Bronson can heal my JTM hatred of him by beating this pesky wunderkind.

it doens't really matter because Bronson can't pitch when the sun shines anyway, probably because of the 5th of rum he drank last night, and he is still distracted by trying to figure out who he woke up with this morning.

Wow
2 left-handed bats and one of them is Bako? Seriously, I can understand resting Griffey if he feels like he needs it, but you can't sit both Votto and Hatteberg as well. And I know Hamels is tough, but his splits are basically identical over his brief career (.706 OPS against RH, .700 OPS against LH). This lineup is a total getaway day lineup.
Good luck, Bronson! You'll need it.

Castro in the 2 hole is exactly why I was against Dusty. Baker's admitted to not knowing much about the team before taking the job, so his only reasons for slotting Castro at the top are his position and age. Crap. I'd really like to be proven wrong about Dusty, Brantley-style.

So, why isn't Keppinger batting second?
He's in the lineup, he's been on fire. Dusty really does just make lineups by position, doesn't he? I'm actually kind of shocked that Hopper isn't batting third.

Because Keppinger is playing first base

what's really disturbing about this
is that he apparently thinks its some kind of a necessity to have the CF and SS batting 1 & 2. If you're going to have this lineup, you really can't justify Castro hitting second instead of Hopper.

Some numbers
In Dusty's previous managerial career, he had managed 2204 regular season games. In 1359 of those games his first two hitters were either a CF or a middle infielder, that's roughly 62% of the lineups.
Even more amazing, is the fact that 1686 of his games managed were led-off by a CF. Next closest is the second baseman at 204. And before someone starts to think he just started the same guy over and over, he had 25 different players play CF and lead-off during that time. Clearly he thinks CF must lead-off.
He seems to be a little more flexible at the two spot, allowing 3 positions regular play in that spot. Shortstops have the most games there under Dusty at 744, followed by 2B at 687 and 3B at 460. It should be noted though that the majority of the 2-hole ABs by a thirdbaseman came from Bill Mueller, who started 381 of those 460 games from the two spot. And while Mueller wasn't a bad hitter by any means, he did kinda hit like a middle infielder. In fact, I'd say he was very similar to Keppinger, but with more strikeouts.
One last bit of minutia...Dusty Baker has never started a shortstop in the 4th spot in the order and only once has he batted a CF in the 4-spot. He has batted a 2B in the 4-spot 688 times, but 684 of those times it was Jeff Kent.
There you have it...Now is anyone still reading this high up in the thread?

gimme some names and I'll check
I'll start with leyland, pineilla, mckeon, narron, boone, buddy bell, gardenhire, tom kelly. That should be a good spread of managers who have had a variety of talent. I don't want to use Torre since his roster was so stable for so long, but if you come up with other names, let me know. I'll post the answers when I get a chance.

Okay, here's what I've got
I can't get the formatting to work right (stupid new RR), so here is a link to a Google Spreadsheet. I limited it to every manager since 1961. The total at the bottom is for all games since 1961, while the list only includes managers with over 500 games managed. The rate for that time period is 39%. Dusty finishes 18th on the list for rate of CF/MIF in the first two spots in the order.

Hamels on GABP
"This is one of my favorite parks," he said. "A lot has happpened here. When you feel really comfortable at a field, it's always exciting to go there."
--------
Myers attributes Hamels' favor to Great American Ball Park's high pitcher's mound.
"I think it's the tallest mound in the league," he said. "The angles that I pitch from, to their eye, I don't think they can register [the ball] as well."
by ken on Apr 7, 2008 11:05 AM EDT 0 recs

I remember in 2003
the pitchers, especially John Reidling, complained that the mound was too low. I bet Bob Boone, Dave Miley, Jerry Narron, Pete Mackanin, Dusty Baker, Don Gullet, Vern Ruhle, Dick Pole, or Tom Hume, snuck out under the cloak of darnkness and rebuilt the mound.
Can you believe that Dusty Baker is the 5th manager since GAB opened in 2003?
