Reds beat Phillies 8-2, post-game wrapup
After a comment by BubbaFan, I think it might be a good idea to do these, at least until the gamethreads speed up.
Voltron was fantastic. If not for Cueto, he would easily be the most exciting new piece to our team, and we have a lot of them. His fastball is ridiculous, and the changeup is probably better. And today, he had the slider working really well, too. Just hairy stuff. Can't wait to see what these guys do this year.
As I mentioned in the gamer, Keppinger and Patterson are driving the offense so far. Phillips and Junior had big games at the plate, but our 1-2 guys have been doing pretty much everything right with their bats. I don't expect that to last, but I'm very pleased with their contributions so far (not to mention Patterson's defense).
Though it's only been 6 games, I'm starting to get really optimistic about this season. The pen has been good, which I kind of expected. I think we're going to be dramatically better from the sixth inning on this year.
Series finishes off tomorrow at 12:30. Go Reds.

remember in 2004
when none of the Reds starting pitchers could break glass?
Harang didn't throw as hard, Lidle, Wilson, Van Poppel, Accevado, Haynes, Claussen.
Now there are 3 power pitchers, a curveball artist, and a standing piece of shit who we can abuse like a girl with low self esteem.

i pretty much figured as far as the depth chart Fogg was the 5th guy
they just wanted to split the young guys up. I would have kept them on a normal rotation, and given Harang an extra day off. There isn't a huge weak link here. There isn't guy in the rotation who is awful. If Fogg struggles there are plenty of other options; Belise, Bailey, and maybe in a couple of months Maloney. Plus there is a wealth of other young pitching talent who could shoot up through the ranks and knock down the door to Cincinnati before the season ends.

Impressive
I really like the way the team is winning games. I like the execution from the pitching at critical moments. I like the way the offense is producing enough to win games. I like the fundamental play. I have to say, this team is much improved. When I'm home this ummer, I'll pay money just to see the pitching. When was the last time we'd say that about the Reds?

you can look at the Reds basic offensive totals here
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/batting?team=cin
some fun with small sample sizes:
patterson had a good game at the plate yesterday and today, but his line after 15 ABs is still .200/.235/.667. So corey patterson has basically been corey patterson, plus some slugging.
Kepp is OPSing 1.117: spicy!
Dunn's is slugging .143: scrappy!
The much-maligned Paul Bako has a much-malignable .606 OPS.
The slumping EdE and his .154/.450/.385 in 20 or so PAs is a textbook example of how a slumping hitter can still be valuable to his team offensively.
Our 1b platoon is a combined 3 for 20 with 0 BBs, 3 Ks and 4 total bases.
I've got a plan and it's as hot as my pants...

atleast in the perception of Ctownboy and the like. If he weren't the leadoff hitter he could be usefull, if he were say in the 7th spot. He could drive in guys who can get on base.

Fay said...
..."There are 26,566 fans in attendance - including 7,125 walk-ups."
Maybe the two young guns will fix Arroyo's main complaint: the lack of butts in the seats.
And Trent says, "I may have underestimated this team." He notes that the kid who threw out the first pitch today was wearing a Cueto jersey. Already.
He also says:
The lesson: In today's game, arms are the key. If you have a superstar-in-the-making outfielder and you can trade him for a superstar-in-the-making starter (who is younger), you gotta make the deal. That's why Reds GM Wayne Krivsky pulled the deal to send Josh Hamilton to Texas for Edinson Volquez and Danny Herrera this winter. It certainly wasn't a move made with thoughts toward the fans, but they could benefit. Volquez looked sharp in his debut, striking out 8 Phillies. Volquez struck out former MVP Ryan Howard and center fielder Shane Victorino twice. If it weren't for the performance of Johnny Cueto earlier this week, there would be Edinson Volquez jerseys for sale right now. There will be soon enough.

the sun was HOTT
We eventually had to move seats since it was much cooler when we left for the game than it was sitting in the sun and we had not dressed appropriately. But then, having a two-year old with us pretty much meant that we weren't sitting anyway. They should have a little post at each seat where you can tether your kids to their chairs. If this were communist Russia, we'd have such a setup already!

I found 70F too cold to be comfortable in Florida. But I didn't have a two-year old in tow. There was also a pretty brisk wind most days.
80F was definitely too hot, at least in the sun. The best game, weather-wise, was the last one I attended. At night at Knology. It was uncomfortably hot during the day, but it cooled off a lot that evening. I was afraid it would be too cold; the wind picked up when the sun went down. But it was temporary. The wind died, and it was a perfect night for baseball.

or you are hedging your bets for when the torn labrums come
i am completley making up these statistics but lets run with them anyway. Lets say that 35% of the top 50 pitching propspects in baseball in the next 6 years suffers a severe arm injury, ranging from loseing a season (Fransico Liriano (hopfully)) to being reduced from a starting pitcher to a closer (Jason Isringhousen), a sever loss of velocity/movement/command but still capable of being a marginal big league starter (Paul Wilson), bouncing between AAA and the Majors (Seth Etherton), or never seeing the light of the big leagues after the injury (Ty Howington). Wouldn't make since to hedge your bets and keep alot of top pitching prospects around so that atleast one, maybe 2, if you are lucky three, can make an impact throughout their arbitration years?

Just arrived home...
after an afternoon of work out in "la loma." I am an a member of an organizing school with that works in rural communities outside of Santo Domingo. Today we had a pleasant workshop making a medicinal plant concoction that can be rubbed on the body as a decongestant and a pain reliever. The idea, more than just to solve health problems, is to teach and practice working together to solve collective problems.
I start this post with that description because I was unable to listen to the wagon's first start this afternoon because of this. I did, however, have a nice conversation with a fellow organizer who is a native Dominican about all of the exciting young (and not so young) players we have from this island on the team this year. I am looking forward to seeing what the press has to say about EdV tomorrow here and anticipate a story about the collective impact of Cueto and Volquez on the Reds and las grandes ligas en general.
Another interesting tidbit from my conversation with the my co-organizer: She dated Odalis Perez for a few years when they were teenagers, but it didn't really work out cause he was always in the States working some job where he had to throw a ball around or something.
Tanzen!

Chico Maravilla II
The Dominican Paper, El Caribe, had a full page color photo of Volquez handing the ball to Dusty yesterday. The Headline read, "Chico Maravilla II" (Wonder Kid II) and had a brief description accompanying it:
Edison Vólquez ponchó a ocho en cinco entradas y un tercio en su debut de ayer con Cincinnati. Fue la segunda buena labor de un joven pitcher para los Rojos tras la gran faena de Johnny Cueto.
Edison Vólquez struck out eight in five and a third innings in his debut yesterday with Cincinnati. It was the second good stint by a young pitcher for the Reds after Johnny's Cueto's great effort.
Nothing groundbreaking here but really cool to see a team other than Boston/New York making waves here. Moreover, really cool to see our team, Cincinnati, making waves here.
Here is a link to the El Caribe article about V-Dub if you want to give your Spanish a whirl.

I kind of hate it that I
temper my enthusiasm, but I do. I realize that NL hitters haven't seen Cueto nor Volquez before. I know Cueto is ahead of the game because he played winter ball, which could lead to a dip as he tires later in the season. Scouts and coaches tell us pitchers generally are ahead of hitters this time of year. Rookies are rookies.
I remember 1980 when some were comparing Frank Pastore to Tom Seaver. I remember the excitement for Paul Moskau, Bruce Berenyi and other such phenoms to be. Then again, I remember Mario Soto, Tom Browning, Gary Nolan and Don Gullett, to name a few who panned out pretty well. Maybe I'm being too cautious.
Both pitchers will experience their ups and downs this season, but OK, I'll wallow around in the fun as long as it lasts, hopefully 15 years or so of glorious Reds domination.

An Aaron Harang like contract is a good deal for both sides. Harang makes a little more money know than he would have made in arbitration, and the Reds buy out his first couple of years of free agency. Those deals are becoming common.

comment on the game
once again, WOW! cable and FSN conspired to screw me, successfully, showing the bluejackets (hockey on such a nice day?) today instead of the Reds. best thing that ever happened to me. i took my transistor radio out to the little patch of cement outside my apartment to sit in the glorious sunlight all afternoon. it was 70 degrees and only a few puffy white clouds roamed the sky. marty went on at length about all the "new" basketball lingo that bothers him so, but with a glass of cool iced tea in hand he doesnt sound as contrary. today was the best day of the year so far, and not just because Volquez and the 'pen pitched very well, or the offense was bangin'. baseball is back, finally, and with it the refreshing breezes of spring. this is my favorite time of year, and even if the Reds lose every game this month it wouldnt matter.

Please allow me to "defend" Marty here.
It's not the word "dribble" that bothers Marty. It's the phrase "off the bounce" that has started to replace "off the dribble" coming fom the mouths of some broadcasters and analysts. Marty doesn't like it.
I don't know if he still calls college hops but I kinda got the feeling this was Marty's way of giving the finger to whoever made the decision to not ask him to. I couldbe completely wrong there but I'm not completey wrong about how ridiculous and petty and annoying the whole diatribe was.
Here's what ya missed:
Marty doesn't like a lot of the new hoops lingo and he wants everyone to know about it in the middle of the first week of this new and rather exciting baseball season. He went on and on about it and other "stupid new terms." And then, as Volquez struck out his fourth or fifth batter relatively early in the game (I'm not sure how many and when and no, I couldn't tell you with what pitches because, well... I was, you know.. listening to Marty not describe the action) he asked listeners to send in emails with more examples of new basketball jargon that offends him.
(If you think I'm making this up, ask Scrabbles or someone else who was trying to listen to a good baseball game being described on the radio.)
By the way, if you're wondering why Marty is bothered by the new terms, don't ask me nad don't ask Scrabbles and don't ask anyon else who was listening to Marty. Other than saying that they were "stupid" and "new" Marty didn't explain why he's so offended. Well, he did finally explain why he'll never use the baseball term "walk-off home run."

"score the ball"
was one of his least favorites. he thinks is redundant. he doesnt like the use of the term "look" either, as in "he had a good look, but missed" or "he's been getting good looks all night and is making the defense pay". he never really explained his dislike for this one, and thom kinda called him out on it. he asked for listeners to email their least favorite new basketball terms, and went over them later in the game. it was borderline insufferable, but as i said, i was drinking a damn fine iced tea.

Oh, and did you catch...
..several innings later (it might have been in the postgame analysis) when Marty said, "Today Edinson Volquez was - in baseball terms- dealing it."
I could be wrong but I would bet that "dealing" used to desrcribe a dominant pitching performance is a relatively new addition to the collective baseball lexicon. Maybe? Maybe not. Either way, I don't care. I just want Marty to suffer a debilitating brain anuerysm. Soon.

Belisle
I saw that Belisle had a fine rehab start in Sarasota: 8 2/3 IP, 3 Ks, 2 H, 0 BB. Wonder why they brought someone else in the get the last out?
I also wonder what the Reds' plan is for him. I can't imagine Fogg is going anywhere unless he is just awful in his next few starts. So that puts Belisle in the bullpen until someone gets hurt. But is there even room there? Who gets sent down? Can they option Belisle to Louisville so he can start? Will they trade him?
by Brian B on Apr 6, 2008 10:48 PM EDT 0 recs
they have no reason to keep fogg over belisle
belisle makes more money, firstly. the 1 mil they owe fogg is peanuts, so if he gets torched he can be put out to pasture rather painlessly. i imagine belisle will continue to make rehab starts until he's good and ready and fogg truly proves his ineffectiveness. once that business is over with, we can move on. belisle will be back, thats for sure. if for no other reason than that a major league rotation cannot go 162 games on only 5 starters.
