Soliciting tips for Dayton..
First off, kudos to obc for recommending 4th St. Live in Louisville last season. 100% good times, for sure.
So I've recently secured tickets to a pair of Dayton Dragons games, and hoping someone familiar with the area can recommend a hotel and choice drinking establishment. Preferably each within walking distance of the park, of course.
Also, in Newport, there's a certain hotel that we see every time we go and can never remember the name. It's just across the street from the Levee.. not a fancy place at all, but very convenient-looking (walking distance from GABP/Gameworks). Econo-Lodge? Economy Inn? Help?
Fourthly, any Indy residents looking at Bats-Indians games at Victory this month? We'll be at a couple of them, at least. It'd be an honor to buy a beer for a fellow RR.

Wow, still getting used to this..
Does every fan post hit and bump down the main page, or did I do something wrong? That's sorta annoying.
I'm from Dayton
What day of the week are you going?

Sat-Sun May 10th & 11th
Saturday night game, Sunday afternoon. We're only about an hour drive from Dayton, just never made the attempt on account of Wikipedia's claim that every game sells 106% of capacity.
Kind of disappointing that even in upper level we didn't get seats together, but decided we must experience it regardless.
Here's the best I can do
Can't really help you on the hotel. The Doubletree is within walking distance (though it's a bit of a hike), but you'll probably be able to find something more affordable.
As for Drinking Establishments, your best bet around the ballpark is Canal Street Tavern. They usually have some pretty good live music there, and the beer is cold. If you're looking to go a little outside the ballpark area, Dublin Pub and Tank's are good bars for the post-college crowd. The Fieldhouse and Jimmy's Cornerstone Bar do alright for those still in college.
If you get there before lunch on Saturday, I cannot scream this last recommendation loudly enough. Voltzy's. It's one guy serving burgers out of a trailer. Trust me on this. He's a little bit South of town, figure 15 minutes from downtown. He actually moved just recently, so you'll have to get directions from him (find 48 South yourself, and get directions from there). His number is 937-299-1440.

Agree with BLee about all of that
The Southern Belle is also good, and right next door to Canal St. I'm a big fan of the Trolley Stop on Fifth St. The whole Oregon District is pretty good. The Dublin Pub and Tank's are more or less in this area too. The Spaghetti Warehouse is a decent dining option, although I forget it's exact location. 3rd and Ludlow? Somewhere near there. As for hotels, they're all pretty much the same. If you stay downtown, you'll be within walking distance of the stadium.
Enjoy the game. As far as A-ball stadiums go, Fifth Third Field is a good one.

Trolley Stop is good!
But the Oregon District can be a little, um, 'out there' for some people. If you guys are sending him all the way to Tank's, why not send him a mile further to Slyder's Tavern, best burgers and wings in the city limits! Although, I've not tried Voltzy's and will have to do so. My main rec for someone wanting to stay downtown would be Milano's on Brown St.. (The grilled ham and provolone sub is killer.)
Should we recommend him scheduling time to go to Mendelson's? You know, in case he needs some kind of industrial surplus parts that you can't find anywhere else.
I've got a contact for tix. I had proposed the idea of getting a group together last year and got some response if I remember, but never made the time.(Yeah, I'm an Ass.) Anyone interested? Unless sonant1 would prefer keeping it a private outing, which I would certainly understand. In which case we could sit across the stadium and scowl. :))
Dammit! Spoke too soon.
May be out of town that weekend, but can still try to get tix for peeps if needed.
I haven't been to Milano's since they gentrified
I did spend a memorable day and a half as a dishwasher there. But yeah, the pizza bread is to die for. And Mendelson's is right there across the street from the stadium. You might as well go. You never know when you'll need a full restaurant kitchen prep station.
Oh, and take a look along the Riverscape. They spent a bunch of money fixing that up. You can see statues representing all the famous inventions Dayton is responsible for. Yup, there's a statue of a search engine. Sukr (or anyone else that still lives there), do the fountains still work? I know they pretty much immediately broke.
No, no.
They weren't broken, they just weren't good enough to begin with. At least that's what the contractor told the city. So we had to spend additional wads of cash to get them to shoot far enough to meet in the center of the river. Then we found out that the mist generated by the more powerful nozzles was coating the buildings downtown with Great Miami Funk. Solution? Dial the new pro-series nozzles back down to the original spray pattern and buy another one to shoot straight up from the center. S-m-r-t
On the bright side, Dayton is now entertaining the idea of, drumroll please, STREETCARS!! Wonder where we got that really, really, really good idea? Lookin' at you Cinci! >: I'm actually surprised we aren't looking into monorail feasibility.
Nah,
No reason for it to be a private outing. If anyone else is going, let me know. I'm getting an overwhelming list of drinking establishments, gonna have to prioritize.
I went ahead and booked the Doubletree. Are any of these places walking distance from Doubletree/Fifth Third? We probably won't have a DD.
And I don't know about Mendelson's, but I'm told Dayton is the world headquarters for a company I deal with every day, NCR. If I can find that building, I might have to stop in and find someone to yell at for awhile. The 7454's display and power adapters are BAD BAD design.
POS
I'm IT staff for an Aloha Point-of-Sale software provider. We used to sell NCR hardware exclusively, but since Radiant bought Aloha we're kind of being forced to force Radiant.
I mostly deal with people at the Peachtree City, GA, location. RMA returns and such.
Damned IT people
I once had a NCR login server when I worked at UC Hospital as a sysadmin. Damn that thing was old and useless. :)
Please Note: I may be totally full of shit.
And the Hotel in Newport
Travelodge

I think
This is what you're looking for in Newport - Travelodge.

that place is kind of notorious
for being a borderline public nuisance with all manner of prostitution and other illicit activities. Plus it smells very musty and there's a lot of mold.
agreed, yuck
every so often, they bust a meth lab in that motel. it's not a very great place. I'd be really scared about what remnant genetic material is in the hotel rooms.
stay away.
Good times
I know too many people who routinely troll last call at Newport and head over to the Travelodge. On one occasion I passed out on the floor of the Travelodge while God-knows-what was going on in the room.
okay
here's what you do:
They'll be standing on the street corner wearing fishnet stockings and 6 inch heels. Stop your car at the corner and roll your window down. They'll ask you something like "Lookin' for a date?". You know what to do from there. That's about all the soliciting tips I have.
Why you are in Dayton go to the Wright Patterson Airforce Museam
it is free and a great way to spend an afternoon. I just went thre on a field trip.
