First off, last night's start couldn't have been more disappointing, in my opinion. I don't know what I expected from Fogg, but I didn't expect another Eric Milton. I know it's just one start, and I don't expect him to be that bad every time out, but wow that was bad.

So for today, our ace will face Philly's  steaming log. I read this about Eaton the other day at The Good Phight: "Seriously? This guy is the Phillies 5th starter going into the season? Again? Please. Just no. Hell, go with 4 starters...for real." Read the rest of that post... it gives me optimism. Eaton beat the Reds last year in his only start against Cincinnati but allowed five runs in six innings. He had a 7.41 ERA in the spring. He's only on the team because of his gaudy contract. Kinda like our old Eric Milton problem. Today is Harang vs. Milton. That oughta make you folks optimistic, even though Ryan Freel is now our backup catcher and our fears that Dusty would pinch hit Juan Castro for Adam Dunn are realized. -boobs

Saw this linked at Redleg Nation

"Where is that young kid who looked so good in spring training in center field, and why isn't he here?" — Gary Matthews Sr., former major-league outfielder, friend of Baker and Phillies broadcaster, asking about Jay Bruce.

I won't hotlink it in a game thread, but It's from McCoy's piece in the DDN.

So why was Dunn double switched out?

I'm still not clear on this.

You're asking the wrong sportsfan.

I was going to ask someone to explain it to me. Sans commentary if possible. (So Geki, hold your tongue.)

I get that he wanted two innings

out of Burton, and he wanted to keep Hatteberg handy for the catching shit or as a ph, but I'm not sure why Dunn got the hook. Because he hit into a double play, and Junior had gotten a hit earlier?

I guess when he double switched he wanted to put in a strong defense, but, if the Reds are to come back from a three-run deficit, I have a hard time believing Dunn wouldn't be involved in this.

That's about all I was able to surmise.

I just imagine Jim Leyland looking at the box scores this morning, seeing that move, raising an eyebrow...

"Huh."

And then taking a sip of coffee.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Apr 5, 2008 11:47 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Followed by Jerry Narron

looking over Leyland's shoulder and saying, "Excellent move, Dusty boy."

Fogg v. Milton

Fogg's on a short leash. The Reds have only $1 million invested in him, and with Belisle and Bailey chomping at the bit, there's some depth, too. I think he gets chances throughout April, but if Homer keeps it up in AAA, look for him to join Cueto and Volquez.

by jamesp50014 on Apr 5, 2008 12:37 PM EDT   0 recs

Bailey

Homer doesn't just need to have few walks and a nice ERA, he needs to start striking people out again.

by Blue on Apr 5, 2008 12:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

True that

I think it comes with pitch efficiency. That's why I'm interested in seeing his walks and pitch counts down there. Still, if Fogg stinks it up, I'd rather Bailey experience his growing pains up here, as the 5th starter.

Well, right

If you're good at a game, aren't you doing it the way it should be played? Y'know, successfully? It's a dumb sentiment, but at least it's applicable to a guy like Utley, rather than Eckstein or any number of ALS's.

Ok

I was kind of hoping for Dunn to pull some kind of web gem spectacular out of his ass to silence the haters. Y'know, EdE in the bottom of the ninth style.

For the RR crew. You guys have been killing me with the game threads I miss. I seem to remember 300 comments being good, and you guys have been blowing that out of the water early on.

"Jam-Master Jay" by Run DMC just came on the iTunes shuffle

Now I really can't wait for Bruce to come up to start throwing out references from that song.

"J-A-Y are the letters of his name! Hitting and fielding are the aspects of his game!"

"He's Jam Master Jay, the real bat master. He hits better cuz he knows he hasta! In '09 he'll be a little faster."

by Brendanukkah on Apr 5, 2008 1:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Actualy Brendan, we encourage Corey to hit leadoff.

It's always been a knock on him

He thinks he's more of a power hitter than he really is. I really hope they can correct this early. Dropping him from the cleanup spot so he doesn't feel the pressure to be a slugger would be a great start.
