Coming off of the high from last night, the rain might put a bit of a damper on our mood for this afternoon affair. They are predicting storms this afternoon and the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch starting at noon.  I take that to mean the rain is pretty much guaranteed.

If they do get to play the game, then we will get our first chance to see Johnny Cueto pitch in a big league game.  It's a moment many of us have been looking forward to for some time now.  The kid has a bright future, but he's still only 22, so there are likely to be some bumps along the way.  Hopefully he'll just manage to stay steady today.  He doesn't need to dominate, just keep the team in the game and get the first one under his belt.

Keep your fingers crossed that the weather will give enough of a break for them to play.  The good news is that this is the only trip the Dbacks make to Cincinnati, so both teams are going to be motivated to get the game in.

I hope there isn't a delay in the early going

knocking Cueto out of the game. It would really suck if it started to rain in the 3rd, and Cueto's day would be finished.

i think they could wait until 2 or 3

if they get it finished by 6 or 7, they leave GAB, get on the plane by 8 or 9, and land in Denver 3 hours later at 9 or 10, and that seems reasonable.

In my professional meteorlogical opinion

It looks like the long band on the bottom is moving more east than north, so it might not hit the downtown area completely. There's gonna be rain, but we might get lucky and not have it rain all day.

I wanted to note something

With the new system, we are now able to schedule game threads in advance to appear everyday at a certain time (usually 2 hours before game time). I just wanted to point that out in case you find yourself getting antsy for a game thread - it will be coming, don't worry. And if it's really important for you to be FIRST, just pop in 2 hours prior to came time. :)

Patterson gets a day off because he only hit a homerun yesterday. I am not a huge Patterson fan by any means, but I do feel if somebody hit a homerun yesterday he should play today. Plus from what I have read from my fellow RR's who have acess to such things as the reds on TV or GAB, he has been hitting the ball hard.

I still hate that they give an off day the 2nd day of the season

Is there a logical reason for it? Not everyone does it, but the Reds do it every year.

I think they schedule games as "sparingly" as possible in April for three reasons...

1] It's cold and rainy and nobody goes to the games.

2] Kids are in school so even if the weather is pleasant, families don't go to the games.

3] Open dates alow for easier rescheduling of rainouts.

To add on to #3

The event of opening day is so important to the city that they want to be able to play it on Tuesday if Monday gets rained out. I think that is the logic behind the off day on Tuesday.

Honestly though, they should look at their opponent and schedule the off day that way. If the team is not coming back to town during the rest of the season, schedule the off day at the end of the series so that you can make up the game while they are still in town. Otherwise you get teams making one day trips to make up games.

Which begs the universal question...

... if opening day gets rained out, is the next game still the second game of the season?

(Translation: Even if Monday gets rained out, why can't Tuesday's scheduled game still be called the opener?)
