BP Shuns media after hitting 2 Jacks Sunday
MixFMKyle originally posted this in a FanShot(tm), but I felt like it needed more visibility for 2 reasons. First, BP was open about taking on the team leader role during the off-season. He specifically said that he wanted to be Barry Larkin. Secondly, everybody on the offense has gotten torn up by the media. I don't know of anybody that has given it especially hard to BP. But I do know that Dunn, EdE, and Junior have had to deal with various calls for their departures for the last couple of seasons. I wonder why BP feels he has been so slighted?
BP Shuns media after hitting 2 Jacks Sunday
From Hal McCoy's Blog:
Now a smidgen of bad stuff. Second baseman Brandon Phillips has his nose out of joint. After getting three hits (two homers) Sunday, he refused to talk to any media, telling them, "Just get out of my space and leave me alone. I don’t feel like talking. Nobody talks to me when I’m going bad. They just write crap. When I’m going good, everybody wants to talk to me. So just leave me alone."
And he was left alone. There was too much good to contemplate over the last two days, 10-9 and 10-1 wins over the Giants, to play games with a moody second baseman. That wide smile can fool you. It isn’t always there in the clubhouse.
But if he wants to be left alone, so be it
Has anyone seen anything calling out BP directly? I have seen reports about the team struggling over all, but I don't really understand where he is coming from.

my intention is not to start some Phillips bashing
I don’t think that’s any more productive than the annoying Dunn or EdE bashing. However, I think this is a significant development in the story of Brandon Phillips. We’ve all heard of his history of malcontent with the Indians, but we’ve never openly seen it from him in Cincinnati. Then, on a day when the Reds won big and won back-to-back games for only the third time this year, the presumptive team leader doesn’t want to talk to the media because his feelings are hurt.
Honestly, I’m shocked. I thought we were beyond this with BP. Obviously he’s not my favorite player, but I thought he’d become a positive influence around the team. Hopefully this whole thing is nothing. But I’ve felt like BP has always been shown in a positive light in the media, and for him to turn this quickly on them is concerning. I’m not sure what you do about it except hope that it doesn’t linger.

Hey I'm not proud of how it was accomplished
but it was accomplished. And that’s why I am having a giant plaque made to hang in my basement. Here’s an excerpt from the speech I plan on giving once the plaque arrives:
It took a long time, huh? (Pause for cheers.) First of all, I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity. I want to thank the Arney family, the Red Reporter organization, the city of Red Reporter, and all you beautiful fans for supporting me. (Pause for cheers). Most of all, I’d like to thank my mom, my friends, and loved ones for their support. I want to give my appreciation to Tom Trebelhorn and the late Billy Martin. Billy Martin was a great manager. He was a great friend to me. I love you, Billy. I wish you were here. (Pauses for cheers.) Caleb was the symbol of great commenting. But today, I’m the greatest of all time. Thank you.

Home runs are nice, but little ball will most always score more runs and makes for a more exciting game.

Methinks he does not know what small ball is
little ball: Where you get enough consecutive hits/walks to bat around and score six runs in the first inning.
If we could just do this every inning, I surmise that the Reds’ offensive woes would be over for good.

"Little ball" "Small Ball" "Smart Ball" "Damn Ball" doesn't score you more runs,
but I can certainly see where fans find it more exciting. There’s a lot of close play, lots of busy outmaking, brisk half-innings, and the score isn’t likely to be lopsided.

Of professional athletes...
Brandon Phillips is the only one that I have sat down and had lengthy conversations with. The guys is nice enough, but he does come across as having a definate me first attitude. Also, the way he dogged his teammates to a total stranger tells me that he has no interest in being a leader.
Phillips wants to pad his stats to increase his pay. If winning happens then that’s nice too. I think it’s unfortunate attitude to have, but one that is prevalent among the modern pro athlete.

I don't have anything against Josh
but you are attributing characteristics to him that you have no knowledge of. Just because a player doesn’t play up his ego in the media doesn’t mean he doesn’t have one. I get the perception that you think Josh is always above the fray, but the fact is Josh has been a lot deeper into the fray than most people get. Assuming that he plays strictly for the love of the game is naive.

Good read
All I was calling attention to is your tendency to suggest that players who are open or evangelical Christians are somehow above the fray of normal athlete behavior.
I presume you are a particular fan of Jeremy Affeldt because of his open evangelism. I have nothing whatsoever against that because we often root for players with whom we share something particular. But Affeldt’s faith didn’t keep him and his agent for going after a big money deal in the off-season and being disappointed in the Reds’ lower offer.
Pettite did steroids, Peavy hits on co-eds in bars, Hamilton wants to play well to make more money for his family and whatever. None of them gives me any real reason to believe they are exceptional when it comes to professional athletes in this country.
And I don’t think they have to be.

good point
i never said that Christian athletes cannot be human, I just was making a point to you that not all athletes are consumed by ego. And you guys will tear me open for this but i do believe that athletes are placed in a spotlight and need to be carefull of what they do and say. Thats why i admire athletes who use the spotlight not for their own glory, but for the glory of God. One of my favorite quotes i’ve ever heard was from hamilton, when he was talking about how his dream was going to the All-Star game, and participating in the home run derby and him being able to share his faith in Christ over the big screen at the game

I would normally stay out of this but,
I’m surrounded by evangelicals with my wife and her family. I’m not going to be disrespectful to you nor your faith, but let’s just try this situation out. Say that I achieve some sort of fame or notoriety and my only dream is to have a stage large enough to decry religious fanaticism and the stubborn rejection of scientific fact. Let’s say I get that opportunity and drive my message home over the JumboTron. Do you think I will be toasted for my courage and sense of virtue, or do you think that I will be systematically dismantled and labeled as some horrible curse to family values?

I don't think that is what he was saying
I don’t think Pops is trying to debate your faith with you. His point was more about the use of public forum. I think his example was an attempt to find a differing point of view, which is to attack faith rather than promote it. I don’t think it was an attack at you so much as saying, “What if someone was using their forum to say something to denounce your faith? How would that go over?”
I think we’re getting into a sensitive area here that doesn’t tend to go over well on the internet. I suggest everyone try not to get too personal or take things too personal.
